Around Hollywood By Vernon Scott HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Kirk Douglas had his eye clawed out and was skewered by Tony Curtis in "The Vikings." He should have it so good right now. Kirk's adversities in that gory epic were nothing compared with his current problems as co-producer and star of "Spartacus." Now in its 60th day of shooting, the film has been jinxed from the start. Douglas has had more battles making the picture than he has in all his adventure movies. Things got off to a bad start when the cleft-chinned actor announced he would produce a screen version of the novel. Yul Brynner, another screen tough guy, said he was going to make the same picture, and what was Douglas going to do about it. After a few months of verbal sword-play, Brynner bowed out and Kirk confidently lined up his cast and director. Another Snag Encountered Again he hit a snag. The cast included the world's most independent performers—Sir Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and Peter Ustinov. Each genius in his own right and generally addicted to scene larceny on a grand scale, the old masters resented taking orders from Douglas. Lesser men would tear hair or take to drink. But not Douglas. He calmly took off few days rest in Palm Springs. There is a little sunshine Kirk's life; however—even if crucified in the picture. Curtis is in "Spartacus," too. This time Douglas kills him! The State Department of DER DRUGS TO INCREASE HEAT OF GERMS BY DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor YORK (UPI)—At least a few chemical compounds preserve people against the hits of sickening bacteria that bacteria maintain them in a state of suspended animation while floating air. J. Webb discovered this suspected that airborne bacteria is one reason for the conspiracy increase in bacterial infection in hospital patients and nel in this age of the bacteria - killers, the anti- and the sulfa drugs. How could this be, when air dries out bacteria in short and thus kills them? His actions showed it could be deadly — with one member notorious staphylococal of people-sickening bacteria, the cells of the bacteria, the are bonded with water. Dies out the water, the structure collapses, and the bacteria are finished. But the antibiotic chloramphenicol and some of the sulfa drugs substitute for water in this bonding. Bacteria remain in Air Air doesn't eliminate them nearly as fast it eliminates water. Meanwhile the bacteria remain in the air, unable to multiply but with their cellular protein structure intact. They get into a human body again and find moisture which dilutes and replaces the antibiotic or sulfa drug. They begin multiplying — they're in business again. The bacteria, of course, have to be "resistant" to the antibiotic or the drug, by which is meant they've learned chemically to live with them. More and more strains of sickening bacteria, especially of the staphylococcal family, are fully resistant. Surgery was first performed about 2500 B.C. Egyptian carvings have been found which show operations being performed. 'Cal-Vet' Loans On Increase, Says State SACRAMENTO (UPI) — More than 23 million dollars in "Cal-Vet" loans in a single month was reported recently by the State Department of Veterans Affairs. Total property purchases of $23,055,040 during March represented the highest monthly total since June 1957. March was the third straight month in which loans topped a workday daily average of one million dollars. The 1,758 loans to California wartime veterans included 1,628 for homes of existing construction, 116 home construction loans and 26 farm loans. Stenley Kubrick was brought in as the new director. He promptly bounced German star Sabina Bethmann from the feminine lead. Sabina, a statuesque blonde, wept unhappily and departed. She said her dismissal came as a shock and that there had been no indication she hadn't been doing a good job. Others Have Own Problems Olivier, Laughton and Ustinov clucked their sympathy, but they WW II Vets Education Aid Dropping Stead SACRAMENTO (UPI) — A collection from World War II vans in California for education assistance have shown a steep decrease to the point where they are now only 37 per cent of total received. Sometimes a squeeze is very simple and occurs quite early. Unless you're watching you won't even know it happened. You don't want West to win the first trick because he might shift to a diamond. East wins the first trick with the king of spades, continues with spades — and South discards a diamond. East is stuck with the lead, with nothing but three diamonds in his hand. If he leads a low diamond, dummy wins with the queen; and if East leads his king of diamonds, South takes the ace and gets dummy's queen later. Either way South makes the contract. Could East get out of this by saving all of his spades? Not really. South knows the spade situation from the very beginning. If East discards two diamonds, South will take the ace of diamonds and then duck a low diamond to East's king. This sets up dummy's queen of diamonds as the tenth trick. The fancy end-play is then not needed. Daily Question With the opponents passing throughout, you open with one heart and partner raises to two hearts.
