Los Angeles St. Phone KE 5-604 If Practice Makes It Easy By OSCAR FRALEY United Press International NEW YORK (UPI)—If practice really does make perfect, Wiffi Smith may be about ready after a three-year wait to take over from the late Babe Didriksen Zaharias as the boas of women's golf. The sturdy, stocky, freckled Wiffi hates to practice. Even so she averaged $2,000 a year in wins on the ladies pro golf circuit the past two years. "But you have to practice and you have to think," she admits in recognizing that she has failed to live up to her potential, "and I've started to do both." Wiffi was hailed as the "new Babe" when she turned pro at the end of 1956. She had been the youngest player ever to win the British Amateur, added the French title and at 19 was the youngest ever to play on the U.S. Curtis Cup team. She could waltop it a mile but, although won $10,251 in 1957 and $7,843 year, the consistency wasn't much fun enjoying life. The formula-born miss was a traveler, having been rail such varied spots as New England, Hawaii, North Carolina, Texas, New Mexico and Michigan. Pigeon Fanciers Hold Shoot By JIM MOORE Members of the Outer Space Pigeon Fanciers Association squared off Sunday in their weekly shooting competition for a prize of as yet undetermined origin, it was revealed by a frazzled carrier pigeon today. In a match fraught with blooeys and blowups, target wood suffered and pistol barrels waxed hot until the final round shakily was squeezed off and the scores tallied. The (whew) results of the hotly contested match saw two men tie for first place. La Richard "Dick" Tracey, of the Santa Ana Police Department tied with Patrolman Paul Shoemaker of the Orange Police Department. Both first place winners shot scores of 385. Following the two first place men were investigator Bob Holmes of the Sheriff's Office, 379; Sam Lyons Jr., unattached, 378; Capt. Joe Morris, Buena Park Police Department, 374; Sgt. Gene Shaffer, Santa Ana Police Department Reserves, 368; Sam Lyons Sr., unattached, 359; Chief W. S. Sparkes, Buena Park Police Department, 352; and Sheriff's Office investigator "Chuck" Curtale, 349. Scene of the hotly contested battle of wandering wad cutters was the Orange County Peace Officers Range on Struck Ave. The match was under the reluctant direction of Chief Keeper of Pigeon Pens and Rangemaster Sgt., Glen Annabel of the Sheriff's Office. Looking forward to the Triangle Round Robin at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., June 3-7, Wiffi finally has decided it's about time she started collecting more cash. “This year I started to practice and it has helped my game tremendously,” she admits. “My three wood and my irons all have improved and so have my chip shots.” There is more than playing golf to merely hitting the ball well, too, she has learned. “You have to think,” she explains. “So I'm picking my clubs better and taking into consideration such important things as where I am going to hit the ball, wind conditions and other factors.
