Tuesday, May 5, 1959 Anaheim (Col.) Bulletin—B-3 I'll Handel This By LEONARD R. HANDEL (Bulletin Sports Editor) When comes the start of 1959 Orange County football action Anaheim fans will be in for their "best ever" season. This happy fact is due mainly to the arrival into the Sunset League of Western High School's Pioneers and the clash with Anaheim's Colonists Nov. 20. Those close to the scene are predicting a turnout of more than 16,000 for this tilt, which if true, should blast remarks made last year that this is not a sports community. The Anaheim - Western game, while still a half year away, is attracting ever-increasing discussion by friend fan, who, depending on his residence, has a number of things to say about the eventual winner. While at first glance it would appear that Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke's Colonists should win pretty much as they please, a closer study gives evidence to many facts to the contrary. Although it is true the Don Davis - coached Pioneers will be in only their second year of varsity competition, a number of details must not go by unnoticed. One is that the boys playing for Davis have been doing so for a number of years and have not exactly been standing still in that time. Although they were unable to win a single Freeway League contest last season, during that time they gave most opponents a real battle before they were made to suffer their losses. In the Orange contest, for instance, the Westerners were defeated by just one touchdown and the Panthers then went on to win the Loop crown in convincing fashion. An item which hurt Davis then was the lack of experience. Which brings up a good point. Come the Anaheim tussle, Davis' men will have had another year of game play and for this reason should be that much tougher. It is a good bet that while Anaheim will probably enter this first crosstown rivalry a slight favorite, the Pioneers will not let this worry them. They will be ready to offer their strongest attack and when this does happen those Colonists could be in for a rough evening. In such men as Ben Fischer, Dennis Painter, Steve Setterlund, Mike Green, Gerald Beutler, Steve Duran, Walt Davidson and Jim Heppe the Pioneers have a group of men who have gained experience together for the past few years. The Pioneers competed in a Sunset League junior varsity schedule the year prior to their Freeway League entrance and in doing so cleaned up everything in sight. It just might be that such will be the case again when they meet Nov. 20 with the Colony. Remember this. Coach Van Hoorebeke's charges will be playing with a team which will have lost many of their top men. Gone will be the greater majority of the lads who brought home the Sunset League crown and while they will have all gone through does happen those Colonists could be in for a rough evening. In such men as Ben Fischer, Dennis Painter, Steve Setterlund, Mike Green, Gerald Beutler, Steve Duran, Walt Davidson and Jim Heppe the Pioneers have a group of men who have gained experience together for the past few years. Coach Van Hoorebeke's charges will be playing with a team which will have lost many of their top men. Gone will be the greater majority of the lads who brought home the Sunset League crown and while they will have all gone through the Loop race, it is doubtful that they will be as strong as the club which represented the school last year. So, it would seem that Colonyville fans can look forward to a highly interesting ball game, which will take a real effort for their charges to capture. Results will be interesting. ADDED THOUGHT Anaheim will have another burden which will not be shouldered by the Pioneers. Because of some tremendous ball clubs in the past, Anaheim has earned the reputation of winning those crucial games. However, this could be a different story. Both teams will be giving with an "all-out effort" which means that anything can happen — and most probably will. THURSDAY GAME Do not forget that the Los Angeles Dodgers will meet New York's Yankees come Thursday evening at Memorial Coliseum. This will be the Roy Campanella Benefit Game and you can be dern certain that it will draw a near-capacity crowd. This brings up a good point for those planning on attending. The crowd will probably near a major league record which would behoove those going to leave real early. Say something like Wednesday afternoon. A few duoats in the unreserved section will be available come game night but if you want them, get there many many hours before the first pitch. The Dodgers and Yanks always put on a good show and this will be no different. See you there. I'll be the guy with the field glasses and short-wave radio. Don Drysdale to Face Braves Following Dodger Victory MILWAUKEE (UPI) — Don Drysdale 2-2, the Los Angeles Dodgers' winningest pitcher against the Milwaukee Braves, will oppose Carl Willey 6-1 tonight in the second of the three-game series between the Dodgers and Braves. The Dodgers, behind two homes by Gil Hodges and a tie-breaking home run by Don Demeter, beat the Braves 5-3 Monday night to dump the hosts into third place in the National League. The win put the Dodgers in second and the San Francisco Giants in first place in the tight race. The win got the Dodgers off to a good start of carrying on last year's record of beating the Braves by a 14-8 margin. And Drysdale hopes to carry on his own record against the Braves. He won five straight from Milwaukee last year. Major League Leaders United Press International National League Player & Club G. AB R. H. Pet. Those were the conclusions drawn today from a poll by United Press International among managers and general managers of other AL teams about the woes of the Yankees, who have lost nine of their last 10 games and are seventh in the league, lower than they have been at this stage of the pennant race in the last 19 years. Some folks think the Yankees hitters are just "in a slump." But General Manager Frank Lane of the league-leading Cleveland Indians, who admits gleefully, "I'm enjoying their trouble," isn't so sure the Yankees' trouble is temporary. "Maybe some of those players George Weiss and Casey Stengel thought were so wonderful aren’t so good," said Lane. "Weis thinks everybody who puts on Yankee uniform immediately worth $100,000." Hit Few Homers "I know it won't last," commented new owner Bill Veeck of the Chicago White Sox. "But you can't blame me for thinking how wonderful it would be to see them stay down there." Almost every manager and club official UPI talked to pointed once to the Yankees' puny batting as the reason for their tumble. The figures are damning: only 2 runs scored per game during the current slump, only three hom runs from home run champ Mickey Mantle, a team total four home runs less than the total for the supposedly weak Washington Senators. Remember those "big innings" the Yankees made famous? They haven't scored more than two runs in any of their last 110 innings. Mantle, now riding the bench with an injured finger, is batting only .276 and other regulars are even worse — Andy Carey .228 Hank Bauer .254 Yogi Berra .228 Tony Kubek .240 and Bob Richardson .239. "Murderer." the Braves 5-3 Monday night to dump the hosts into third place in the National League. Johnny Podres, with a vital assist from Art Fowler in the ninth, was Monday night's winner and boosted his season record to 3-2—two of the wins on the road. He managed to only get two road wins all last season. Podres gave up 12 hits, including a 2-run homer to Eddie Mathews in the third that opened up the scoring, and a four-bagger in the eighth to Joe Adcock. He walked only one and struck out five. Hodges who had four-for-four with his homers and a single and a double off of loser Warren Spahn, hit a double in the fourth and scored on a double by Rip Repulski. He knotted the score at 2-2 in the sixth on his first homer. Demeter slammed out a 390-foot two-run homer over left-field fence in the seventh for the go-ahead runs and Hodges collected another homer in the eighth with a 400-foot effort over center-field fence. QUITS PRO BASEBALL BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI) — Former Baltimore Oriole bonus baby Jim Pyburn will help coach football, basketball and track at Woodlawn High School here. But it's only the first time for the pitchers because they Sugar Ray Seek San By JACK CUDDY United Press International NEW YORK (UPI)—Sugar Ray Robinson, dethroned as middle-weight champion by the National Boxing Association and threatened by the New York State Athletic Commission, may seek sanctuary in Europe. "I've been offered a big guarantee by promoter Fritz Gretschell of Berlin to defend my title against Gustav Scholz if I'm forced out of my own country," said Sugar Ray today. Scholz, of Germany, is the fourth-ranking contender, but he has been rejected as challenger by both the NBA and the New York commission. Each organization insisted that 39-year-old Robinson defend against former champion Carmen Basilio of Chittenango, N.Y. The NBA vacated Robinson's 160-pound championship Monday because of his excessive delay in signing for a defense against Basilio. And the independent New York commission probably will follow suit if he falls to sign by May 15 for a Basilio match. Orders Title Bout Although the European Boxing Union has a working agreement with the NBA, it's uncertain whether the EBU would concord with the NBA in dethroning Sugar Ray, were he to sign for the Scholz fight in Germany. We Germany is a member of the EBU. Dr. Ward Wylie, president of the NBA, announced the withdrawal of championship recognition. Ben Hogan Has Found Cure For Years of 'Bad Putting' By ED FITE FORT WORTH, Tex. (UPI) — Bantam Ben Hogan, fresh from an 18-hole play-off victory over Fred Hawkins for his fifth Colo- nial National Invitation golf tour- nament title, thinks he has found the cure for "five miserable years" of putting. That may be a warning to the rest of the golfing world that little Ben at last may achieve his one big goal at the age of 47—that of becoming the only man to win five U.S. Open championships. The Open will be played at Winged Foot Golf Club in Ma- maroneck, N.Y., five weeks from now. Hogan, who fired a one-under-par 33-36—69 in gale-like winds that hit 45 miles per hour in gusts to beat Hawkins by four strokes for the $5,000 top prize money, thinks the "fifth" he picked up here may be an omen. Sad Sam Jones Hurls for Giants As League Leaders Meet Redlegs CINCINNATI (UPI) — Sam Jones 2-3 is manager Bill Rigney's nominee to pitch for league-leading San Francisco tonight against Cincinnati and there's always a chance the Giants will win another so long as the ninth inning isn't outlawed. True to form, San Francisco exploded for four runs in the last frame Monday night to down the Reds, 6-5, and regain first place in the National League, which is turning into another rat race. In second place, nine points behind them, are the Los Angeles Dodgers, who open a four-game series in Seals Stadium this Thursday. The Dodgers, who spent most of last season racking up the league champ Milwaukee Braves, beat them Monday night in their first meeting of the year, 5-3. This dropped Milwaukee into third spot but only a half-game out of first. At the time, Wylie ordered a fight if the vacant crown within 60 days between former champions Bass- and Gene Fullmer of West J- dan, Utah. Wylie said the Basilo-Fullm winner would defend against the NBA-selected challenger within days thereafter, and that the chil-enger might be third-ranking S der Webb of Chicago.
