California's acute problems in improving highway safety records are emphasized in a summary of the State's 1958 motor vehicle registrations reported by Motor Vehicles Director Robert McCarthy. "The 1958 total of vehicles registered in the last full calendar year marks a new high of nearly seven and three-quarter millions of autos, trucks, trailers and cycles licensed by DMV", McCarthy said. "This is an increase of nearly a third of a million vehicles over the 1957 total."
The figures in the two-year comparison by McCarthy are: 7,724,448 for 1958; 7,491,844 for 1957; an increase of 232,604, or three per cent in the year. Of the 1958 total, 7,626,989 were privately owned vehicles for which fees were paid in these classifications: Autos, 6,043,483; trucks, 876,336; trailers, 646,399; motorcycles, 60,771. The comparable groups in 1957 were: autos, 5,895,909; trucks, 849,964; trailers, 599,231; and motorcycles, 57,400.
State, local government, district and public service vehicles, all entitled to fee-exempt plates, numbered 97,459 in 1958, and 89,340 in 1957.
McCarthy said the number of drivers' licenses outstanding in the State as of December 31 is shown by department files to be 7,505,909. "One of our continuing programs is to purge expired and inactive drivers' licenses from our files," the Motor Vehicles Chief said. "The State is conspicuous for the fact that our records show a larger total of motor vehicles registered for operation than the total of licensed drivers. This is in part due to the large number of families which operate two or more vehicles.
YOUR MONEY'S WORTH
Average Income for 'Average' Families Figured at $6,220 for Nation Today
By SYLVIA PORTER
You're only an "average" family in our nation today if your income runs around $6,220 — that's all you're just "average" at this level.
You're actually in the lower half of this nation's families and single individuals if your income doesn't exceed $5,050.
You're in the minor one-quarter of America's consumers if you don't have some "liquid assets"—such as money in a checking or savings account, savings & loan association shares, U.S. savings bonds.
You're becoming fairly typical if your family includes a working wife; in more han four out of 10 families in the upper income range today, both husband and wife are working at paid jobs.
You have a whopping 6,800.00 counterparts in this country if your family income tops $10,000 and there are a respectable 2,500.00 others similar to you if your family income tops $15,000.
You're in a tiny group of little more than one out of 10 consumer units if your income is under $2,000—and if you are at this bottom of the income scale, the odds are you're single, in your older years and perhaps retired or a farm operator whose income includes a lot more than cash.
You're among the more than two of every five families and single persons if your personal income ranges between $4,000 and $8,000—and your in the upper 22 per cent if it tops $8,000. A decade ago less than one-third of us were in the $4,000-$8,000 bracket—the average $8,000 alone.
ter off. You're in a fatter percentage if you expect to be making more a year from now than not more than four in 10 expect to making more.
You're no longer at all unusual if yours is a husband-and-wife working team. As recently as 1957 only 30 per cent of all families in the highest one-fifth income bracket included a working wife now 40 per cent of all these families do.
Finally, you're average if your family has marched up the livelihood ladder during this decade. The real income of American families—income after tax and after allowing for price creases—has climbed at a rate averaging 1% per cent since 1947.
"Personal incomes are now running at a record rate of $368.5 million a year." ... "In March also personal incomes soared a full billion." ... "Incomes are a billion over this period of 1958."
So run the reports out of Washington's agencies these days and they're obviously confirming the emergence of a new prosperity.
But statistics of this magnitude defy comprehension. Only with the fabulous figures are transced into the down-to-earth ten of our own incomes does the meaning come home. Here, the fore, are more financial facts about "us," just compiled by the Department of Commerce and the Federal Reserve Board. You'll find it fascinating (and I hope gratifying) compare your own family against the averages.

"This margin may not be so great as it appears, however, since a considerable number of drivers here do not hold California licenses. In the case of visitors properly licensed in other states, this is within the law. But California residents who drive without licenses or with expired licenses are in violation of the law. The Department of Motor Vehicles is currently cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in citing motorists who violate these laws. An acute problem is presented by persons who are guilty of driving at any time while their licenses are under suspension or revocation. The courts have been imposing severe sentences on violators found guilty of this very serious offense."

Mosk Says California Crime Leveling Off Now
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — Attorney General Stanley Mosk has reported a levelling off in California's rising crime rate for the first time since 1955.
In a preliminary report from the Bureau of Criminal Statistics, Mosk said last year's crime rate rose only 3 per cent over 1957 although the state's population increased by 4 per cent.
"Considering the fact that during the two previous years the rates of increase were nearly 12 per cent, the 1958 picture showed a lessening in the general trend of rising crime rates which has been observed since 1955," he said.
The preliminary report showed a total of 208,292 crimes as compared with 194,038 in the previous year. A total of 150,955 juveniles were arrested for criminal or delinquent behavior, an increase of 6,000 over 1957.
