READING CLINIC PREPARATION — Mrs. Helen Thompson, who originated the Thompson Reading Clinic in this city in 1951, her clinical classes held at the Anaheim High School, is checking over results of her work with one of the young students as she prepares to open the clinic at the Chapman College in Orange. Mrs. Thompson, who received her A.B. degree at Drake University, her M.A. at Claremont Graduate School, and who has done her further graduate and research work in her specialized field at Universities of Chicago, Wisconsin, California and Southern California, has achieved a distinction for her clinical program with national educational circles. She is to be listed in the first edition of "Who's Who of American Women." She has been on the staff of Long Beach schools for 31 years. She and her husband John, also a Long Beach faculty member, reside in Anaheim. (Bulletin Photo) Helen Thompson Named to Important Post at Chapman Helen M. Thompson, Southland educator known particularly for her work in the field of reading improvement, has accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Education at Chapman College, President John L. Davis has announced. The Thompson Reading Clinic, from its present location at Anaheim High School to the Chapman established in 1951, will be moved College campus. Reading Workshop for Teachers, which Mrs. Thompson has conducted at the University of Southern California the past few years, will become a part of the Chapman summer session program. "The Thompson Reading Clinic has achieved a position of real distinction," President Davis said. "With the locating of the Clinic on the Chapman campus, the community will have one of the finest reading laboratories to be found anywhere." For school age children, the clinic offers individualized reading improvement through a complete testing and retesting program, individual diagnosis, and remediation techniques, and a written report to parents and school. The clinic also offers vocabulary building and speed reading classes for adults and further reading improvement for college-age students. Student teaching in remedial reading would be available for Chapman College education majors through the clinic. Mrs. Thompson received her A.B. degree at Drake University and her M.A. at Claremont Graduate School. She has done further graduate work at Claremont and work relating to reading at the Universities of Chicago, Wisconsin, California and Southern California. She is active in the American Psychological Association, American Educational Research Association, and Association for Childhood Education International, and is an Honorary Life Member of the National Council of Parents and teachers. In Long Beach, where she has been employed in the schools for 31 years, Mrs. Thompson has been active in the work of the GI Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Mental Health Association, Long Beach Council for Educational Television, and Long Beach Chapter of the National Foundation for Manifest Paralysis. Mrs. Thompson has just completed two years as national public relations chairman of Pi Lambro Theta, honorary for women in education, and is to be listed in the first edition of "Who's Who American Women." DeFore Is President Election of officers for Loara Parent-Teacher Association was held at the April meeting. The new officers are: Mrs. V. DeFore, President; Mrs. C. Merchant, vice-president; Mrs. H. McAftery, second vice-president; Mrs. W. Way, secretary; Mrs. W. Held, treasurer; Mrs. K. Bulloch, auditor; Mrs. P. Murdoch, historian. A program on home-school relations was also presented. A panel of Loara teachers described the aims and goals of the homework program as it pertains to the different grade levels. One teacher represented each grade level on the pannel. A question and answer period followed the panel discussion. Lund's fifth grade class presented play, "The Boy Abe", depicting the boyhood life of Abe Lincoln. The young thespians did a fine job, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed it. Flynn, sixth grade teacher and juvenile safety chairman of Loara PTA, gave a report on the bicycle safety program. The Association voted to participate in this worthwhile program and to contribute $20 for expenses. According to Mrs. Verne DeFore, rehearsals are well under way for the musical extravaganza, "Loara's Folly", to be presented by Loara PTA in the school auditorium on May 22 and 23 at 8:30 p.m. All those interested in participating should contact Mrs. DeFore. Brownie Troop 158 had the honor of serving as color guard. First grade room representatives were hostesses during the social hour. Philadelphia, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. LBSC Sportsday Set For High School Girls The women's physical education department of Long Beach State College has extended an invitation to all Orange County high schools to participate in sportsday, Wednesday, May 13. Competition will be featured in volleyball, softball, swimming, tennis and badminton. Anaheim, Brea-Olinda, Buena Park, Huntington Beach, La Habra, Santa Ana, Valencia, Western Capistrano, and Lagena Beach high schools have already indicated their intention to compete. Schedule calls for introductions from 1:45 - 2 p.m.; activity period, 2-4; and demonstration, entertainment, and refreshments, 4-4:30. Goodwill Group Makes Plans For Open House Goodwill Industries officials proceeded today with plans for open house at the Goodwill plant in Santa Ana May 6, 7 and 8. President Dwight Eisenhower, is praising the Goodwill Industries program; relayed by Goodwill Industries of America in Washington, the President's statement said that "by helping severely disabled Americans to become self-supporting through work, Goodwill Industries is making a valuable contribution to the community". An exhibit by the Orange County Model T Club and booths displaying wares of the Goodwill Women's Auxiliary will be located in front of the plant at 2702 W. 5th St. Republican Women of Anahare embarking on a neighborneighbor dollar-registration in party starting with the "kickcoffee at the Home Savings Loan Recreation hall tonight 7:30. Couple To Guest on OCC Forum Lecture Special guests of Dr. Giles T. Brown's Forum lecture Tuesday at Orange Coast College will be Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hitchcock who will talk and show pictures of the native life in South Africa. Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock were born and have lived all their lives in the Union of South Africa and recently they have come to America and are making plans to live here. Mrs. Hitchcock was active in the movement called "The Black Sash" — a women's group which has opposed the racial laws of the Nationalist Government. Dr. Brown will donate an hour to a review of current trends. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in room 8 of the music building.
