Bulletin Thursday, April 20, 1958 YMCA Proposal Fought At Commission Meet PULLERTON (OCNS) — A proposal to develop a North Orange County YMCA center at Nicholas and Malvern Aves., was denied by the Planning Commission Tuesday night. Unless appealed to the City Council within 10 days the action is final. More than 100 persons jammed into the council chambers at City Hall most of them in protest to the application by the property owner, M. J. Blair, for a zone change from R-1 to R-3 and a conditional use permit for the YMCA facility. The hearing was the longest of 17 items that lasted until 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Approximately 280 names were on petitions submitted in protest. Planning Director Don De Witt also read 15 letters in protest and reported he had received 18 names on a petition supporting the plan. Buy On Easy Terms Water Bath Submitted on Fight Against Smog SANTA ANA (OCNS) — County supervisors have taken under submission a proposal by a Palm Springs man to eliminate smog from automobile exhaust. The plan, submitted by John Logan, would require autos to have a water bath device that measures 13 by 5 by 4 inches. Exhaust would pass through the water bath before traveling out of the exhaust pipe. Detailed drawings of Hogan's device were examined by supervisors before they referred the matter to William Fitchen, the county Air Pollution Chief. Anaheim Wife Beating By Orange County News Service An Anaheim man who reportedly struck his wife and teenage daughter is in Orange County Jail today and will appear in Court May 1 for his preliminary trial. He is 45-year-old Glenn Richard Wood, 10942 Fraley, who is accused of striking his wife, Chloe Marie, 42, and his daughter, Susan, 15, who tried to help her mother. The defendant is charged with inflicting coronal injury to his wife and child. The alleged attack reportedly occurred in the presence of several other of the Wood children. The man reportedly hit the woman about the face after an argument and the man then slapped the daughter when she interfered. He then pushed his wife and hit her again. The teenage girl grabbed a mop handle and came to the defense of her mother. Mrs. Wood and the children then all left the home to go to a sister-in-law's residence in Covina. For the Red Man WASHINGTON (UPI) — The Federal government has spent more than $2 billion in the past 60 years to subsidize the American Indian. In this fiscal year, the government will write support checks of about $300 for each of the estimated 300,000 Indians now living on reservations. Ted Duran will act as MC for the two hour program. "Fiesta Mexicana" will also feature Virginia Ibarra, better known as The Rancherita, as a special extra added attraction. She will perform a spectacular Spanish dance that has become her trademark. Orangefair stores will be open until 9 p.m. for Monday night shoppers, and invite visitors to view the festivities.
