I'll Handel This
By LEONARD R. HANDEL
(Bulletin Sports Editor)
Tomorrow evening Anaheim Bowl, the newest of such facilities in this area, will present its Grand Opening for the people of Orange County.
This affair will bring to a close many months of hard work and determination on the part of those in charge.
Since its inception last year, Anaheim Bowl has grown from the idea of a few public-spirited citizens, to one of the finest projects in the Southern California area.
Walt Guerrero, public relations director, reports that during the coming months, Anaheim Bowl will become known as the home of fine food, entertainment and social gatherings, as well as a top-rated pin palace.
In the future Anaheim Bowl has planned a number of top-flight Leagues which promise to afford local fans with many exciting evenings of kegling action.
Anaheim Bowl officials are starting right off with a large-type bang in announcing that such fine bowlers as Merle Matthews, Bill Lillard, and Marion Ladeweig will appear.
Another feature of the opening night activity will be a contest pitting the fine Los Angeles All-Star Train Bowling Team against the sharp Orange County All-Stars.
Anaheim Bowl, starting with a rush, figures to continue in this same vein.
Guerrero reports that the bowling facilities will be among the best in not only Orange County, but the Southland as well.
During the past few months free instruction has been afforded women of the area with trained personnel taking care of the course.
This practice will continue and you can be certain that it will always meet with tremendous response.
Anaheim Bowl is unique in many ways.
One is that the facility, while sporting 40 top-flight alleys, will not especially stress bowling.
It is expected to become a convention center as it is featured by six banquet and meeting rooms which can accommodate some 700 persons at one time.
In addition to this each room has its own sound system and can be separated from the rest on a moment's notice.
Anaheim Bowl is the project of the three Brutucao brothers, Louis Angelo and Leonard.
This group constructed Covina Bowl but admit freely that this facility is the better.
In the entertainment field such stars as Roberta Linn, Harry Babbitt and Bob Crosby have starred.
Guerrero reports that this high plane of entertainment will con-
Saturday’s ‘Alamitos Derby Will Answer Many Questions
LOS ALAMITOS — More than ever, Saturday’s $20,000 Los Alamitos Quarter Horse championship shaped up today as the race which also will settle the 3-year-old title of the 23-day spring meeting.
The championship was expected to bring about a decisive meeting between Ray Seely’s Tidy Too, winner of last Saturday’s $28,000 Derby, and Hoss Inman’s First Call, winner of the Barbara B. the same day.
But yesterday a third element was added — Marion Seward’s Miss Louton.

Haney Offers Two Guys So They Offer Sluggish

Fred Haney offers two guys a seat and they promptly thank him with some stand-up slugging that puts Milwaukee back in first place.
Johnny Logan and Wes Covington were the men Haney wanted to sit down.
Logan and Covington showed their “appreciation” by belting two-run homers Wednesday night in a 9-3 victory over the Cardinals that moved the Braves back atop the National League after a three-day lapse.

Confident Mike Faces Top Tourney Field
FORT WORTH, Tex. (UPI)—Big Mike Souchak, oozing confidence on the heels of his $10,000 triumph in the Tournament of Champions, started in quest of the $5,000 Colonial National invitation plum today against a picked field of 47 other pros.
Souchak teed off at noon in a threesome with George Bayer and Fred Haas Jr. He said he felt he was playing as well, "perhaps a little bit better," than when he set the PGA 72-hole record of 257 in the 1955 Texas Open and included the Colonial crown among four titles picked up in 1896.
Actually, Souchak wasn't a pronounced favorite to grab top honors in the $27,300 affair. As for that matter, there wasn't a solid choice among the four dozen starters.
Veteran Cary Middlecoff had been the sports writers' No. 1 pick, but they voted before his game fell apart to a next-to-last 305 at Las Vegas.
Arnold Palmer, the well-heeled Pennsylvanian, was a strong second choice and Dow Finsterwald, always a good scorer here, was third in the voting.
Ben Hogan, a four-time winner here on his home course, enhanced his standings somewhat by shooting a seven-under-par 63 Wednesday to break the course record for a non-competitive round. A crowd of 4,500 paying fans, second largest here, viewed Hogan's sizzling practice round.

Johnny Logan and Wes Covington were the men Haney wanted to sit down.
Logan and Covington showed their "appreciation" by belting two-run homers Wednesday night in a 9-3 victory over the Cardinals that moved the Braves back atop the National League after a three-day lapse.
Haney announced he was going to bench both players when the Braves came back home from a losing road trip Sunday night. When two games were rained out this week, however, he changed his mind and let them stay in the line-up.
For good measure, Hank Aaron contributed his fifth home run of the season along with three singles that boosted his league-leading average to .326, and Bill Bruton also homered. Backed by a 15-hit attack, Lew Burdette breezed to his fourth straight victory although he was clipped for 11 hits, including homers by Gino Cimoli and Bill White.
Dodgers Lose
The victory moved Milwaukee into first place by percentage points over the Dodgers, who were beaten by the Phillies, 5-4.
The Pirates nipped the Giants, 3-2, and the Reds crushed the Cubs, 18-8.
In the American League, the Yankees opened their Western invasion with a 5-2 victory over the White Sox; the Tigers ended a six-game losing streak with a 7-1 win over the Orioles in a game called at the end of five innings because of rain, and the Athletics outlasted the Senators, 7-6. The Boston-Cleveland night game was postponed because of rain.
The Phillies came up with two runs in the ninth to beat Dodger southpaw Johnny Podres. Pinchhitter Dave Philley's bloop swung with two out in the ninth drove in Bob Bowman with the winning run.
Bill Mazeroski's home run capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning that gave the Pirates their victory over the Giants.
The Reds shelled six Cub pitchers for 18 hits, including home runs by Frank Robinson, Gus Bell and Roy McMillan. Cincinnati turned the game into a rout with an eight-run rally in the second inning, during which 13 batters went to the plate.
Yankee Power Wins
Three Yankee home runs proved the undoing of the flustered White Sox. Mickey Mantle got the Yanks off winging with a two-run home in the first inning.
Koufax to As Dodge
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — Trailing the National League southpaw Sandy Koufax to face an effort to break even in The Dodgers practically wrapped up Wednesday when the hosts launched a run rally with two outs in ninth inning and won the 5-4.
Koufax will try to regain Californians' honor tonight and identically rack up his first of the season. He's had starts but his record rebounded. Opposing Koufax will be Semproch with a 2-0 record.
The Dodgers seemed to have game in the bag Wednesday behind the pitching of J.J. Podres when things fell apart the ninth.
Chico Fernandez started Philis' comeback rolling w single after one out had beenistered. Jim Hegan fanned second out and Fernandez cut to second on a wild pitch.
Then Bob Bowman through with a single that Fernandez to tie the score Richie Ashburn singled B to second. That finished B (and loser) Podres and Artler went in to try his hand. Dave Philley, pinchhitting George Anderson, popped a short left field. Ron made a diving attempt to the ball but it fell safely and man scooted home with the ning run.

Colonist Tracksters Enter League Finals Tomorrow
Because of their larger number of qualified entrants Anaheim will enter a slight favorite, but general consensus of opinion is that they will have to exert their best effort of the season if they wish to win the crown.
Hager, looking towards tomorrow's meet said; "We are going to have to put out a maximum effort as each team will be seeking to over-throw the favorites and annex the title for themselves."
Taking a look at Tuesday's preliminary action, it is simple to see that the local's major force will be in the sprint divisions.
There, such men as Bob McPhillips, Bill Smith, George Bragg, Gerry Woodward, Gary Shepard and Denis Vollom race to good finishes and it is believed that they will carry the major share of the local crew's attack.
McPhillips and Smith qualified in the 100; Bragg, Smith and McPhillips scored in the 220; Gerry Woodward and Bragg in the 440 and Shepard in the 880.
Vollom tallied in the 120 highs and will also work in the high jump.
In that event it only took a five-foot-four to qualify and Denis' top leap has been a 6-2.
Also Sparked
The Colonists will also be sparked by the racing ability of Bill Crain, who will carry the standard in the mile.
Under Sunset League track rules neither the 1320 nor mile need to qualify in the prelims, so this race will be conducted for the first time tomorrow.
Also in this category are the varsity pole vaulters, Shepard to carry the largest part of the weight here, and the 880 relay.

Koufax to Face Phils
As Dodgers Eye Lead
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — The Los Angeles Dodgers, once again filling the National League-leading Milwaukee Braves, tapped Koufax Sandy Koufax to face the Philadelphia Phillies tonight in effort to break even in the two-game series.
The Dodgers practically had their opener with the Phils appended up Wednesday night when the hosts launched a two-in-one rally with two outs in the sixth inning and won the game.
Koufax will try to regain the Milwaukee's honor tonight and incidentally rack up his first win of the season. He's had three starts but his record remains. Opposing Koufax will be Ray Amproch with a 2-0 record.
The Dodgers seemed to have the same in the bag Wednesday night behind the pitching of Johnny Adams when things fell apart in the ninth.
Chico Fernandez started the Phillips comeback rolling with a single after one out had been registered. Jim Hegan fanned for the second and Fernandez dashed second on a wild pitch.
Then Bob Bowman came through with a single that scored Fernandez to tie the score at 4-4. Richie Ashburn singled Bowman second. That finished starter and loser) Podres and Art Fowler went in to try his hand.
Dave Philley, pinchhitting for George Anderson, popped a hit short left field. Ron Fairly made a diving attempt to catch the ball but it fell safely and Bowman scooted home with the winning run.
Wally Post and Duke Snider dashed in a batting duel during the game, witnessed by 13,775 fans.

Four Former Champions
In State Tournament
SANTA MARIA (UPI) — Four former champions, headed by two-time winner Smiley Quick, lead a field of more than 130 golfers expected for the California State Open Golf Tournament May 7-10 at the Santa Maria Country Club.
The other champions entered in the tournament are Eric Monti—the 73-hole record holder, Ellsworth Vines—1954—and Zell Eaton—1951.
The four-day Open will be preceded by a two-day 18-hole program. The California Senior PGA title also will be at stake on the final two days of the tourney.
SPORT-VIEWS

Championships in the four-footed and two-fisted categories top the bill of fare for those of us who take our sports through a "tube".
Strength of the two-fisted serving has been diluted considerably — it's been so long since we have been fed a full-strength heavyweight championship match they must feel we couldn't take anything stronger just now... Matter of fact, British Boxing Board of Control is "teed off" to the extent they officially announced the fight is not "in the interests of British boxing".
Be that as it may, Brian London, from a town of the same name, will meet Floyd Patterson on national TV Friday night in the Indianapolis Coliseum for the heavyweight championship of the world. Bout was originally planned for Las Vegas. D'Amato, Patterson's manager, switched the site to avoid any misunderstanding to the effect it might be tied in with gambling interests.
Frankly, the Vegas pros didn't want any part of it.
Saturday CBS-TV puts some real strength into our week end sports diet with their coverage of the main event in the "Sport of Kings" — the Kentucky Derby, from Churchill Downs in Louisville.
The only thing these two championship events have in common is the sponsor — Gillette Cavalcade of Sports.
Last Sunday's NBC coverage of the Tournament of Champions in Firpo fight, 3. Both of the Louis-Schmeling fights and, 4. The Barney Ross vs Henry Armstrong title fight.
The show will start at 8 p.m. and the Academy is located at 2041 East Fourth Street in Santa Ana.
The four-day Open will be preceded by a two-day 18-hole program. The California Senior PGA title also will be at stake on the final two days of the tourney.
Las Vegas was, in general, very good. Bill Bennington switched cameras at one very inappropriate moment, but Chick Hearn did a bang-up job on the mike. And, speaking of "mikes", Mike Souchack was certainly cooperative. No dilly-dallying, big Mike stepped up to the pill and belted it right out. Some of 'em take enough time to count the blades of grass between the ball and the cup.
