Former Giant Hero, May Return to Majors By HAL WOOD United Press International SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — Dusty Rhodes, hero of the World Series for the Giants in 1954 when they operated out of New York village, may make the big time again. Manager Bill Rigney of he San Francisco Giants says that Rhodes, who is murdering the ball for Phoenix of the Pacific Coast League, may be called up for pinch-hitting duties in the National League race. "Our pinch hitters have been so weak that we could use a man like Dusty," says Rigney. "He's really clouting the ball at Phoenix." Statistics for the first two weeks show that ol' Dusty is rapping the apple at a .320 clip, including four doubles, four homers and nine runs batted in. Giant Bench Folds Meanwhile, the San Francisco club has come up with a total of one (1) single in 17 pinch-hitting attempts. One of the toughest jobs Rigney had after spring training in 1958 was to send Rhodes down to Phoenix. But the Giants were in a new city, they were on a youth kick and they hasn't been able to win with established performers. "It's tough sending him down," Rigney told me when the announcement came. "I certainly hope some other club in the majors brings him back if we can't." But nobody gave Dusty a bid and he now is in his second season in the PCL. Despite the fact that he's been around a long time, Rhodes won't All Boxing Writers Tab Floyd Patterson INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Every boxing writer participating in a United Press International poll to pick the winner of the Floyd Patterson-Brian London heavyweight championship fight favored the defending title holder, but London had surprising strength in the number of writers who picked him to last more than seven rounds. Even the five British newspapers among the 38 voting anticipated a triumph for Patterson. Two writers expected the fight to go to a 15-round decision. Three others predicted 13 rounds. A total of 27 writers thought the fight would last more than 7 rounds. Grading Excavating Asphalt Paving Since 1930 Goode & Schroeder, Inc. Former Boxer, Woods Starts Jail Sentence LOS ANGELES (UPI)—Former boxer Bobby Woods, 24, began a 90-day sentence today in a county road camp for attempting to rob a liquor store armed with a safety razor. The ex-fighter, who once fought some of the nation's better featherweight and lightweights but is now half-blind, was arrested March 11 when he tried to rob a 63-year-old woman clerk in a store. Woods, formerly of Spokane, Wash., walked meekly out of the store when the woman refused to hand over the money. He was arrested minutes later. Halas Ex-Yankee CHICAGO (UPI) — George Halas, owner and head coach of the National Football League's Chicago Bears, played professional baseball with the New York Yankees before suffering a leg injury. Local Tennis Club In Successful Tourney By Bill Piper During this year's Annual Anaheim Closed Tennis Tournament an abundance of court talent was displayed which insured a successful tournament. It was sanctioned by the Anaheim Tennis Club and held at the City Park's tennis courts. Tournament manager, Barry Ryan, had excellent help by the five members of the tournament committee: Bill Armstrong, Dick Metteer, Pam Davis, John Light and Bert Davis. All participants were notified of the time of their various matches. Requests for special time considerations were adhered to whenever possible. Any person not able to play on Saturdays was limited to one event. Dick Metteer, dominating the men's events, defeated Don Kiliss in singles by a third set default, 9-11, 6-3, 3-1. He also captured the men's doubles trophy as he teamed up with hard hitting Bill Armstrong to defeat Kliss and John Light 6-3, 6-3. In the women's bracket, Dee Armstrong worked to the final slot where she gained her singles trophy from Pam Davis, who defaulted. The reason for Pam defaulting to Mrs. Armstrong, was the current Ojai State Championships. Pam did very well at this tournament in doubles; she and Barbara Tab Dallas Long As Record Smasher No less an authority than Jess Mortenson, SC track coach, says his giant freshman shot putter, Dallas Long, may be ready to exceed the world record "at any time." This could mean this Saturday afternoon on Westwood's Trotter Track when the SC and UCLA varsity and fresh cinder teams collide in their traditional dual meets, starting at 1 p.m. with the shot put and other field events. Ducky Drake, UCLA coach, is having the shot put area surveyed so that everything will be readiness if Long gets off a record-breaking heave. This 6-foot, 4-inch, 260-pound giant has already officially tied Parry O'Brien's world shot put record of 83 feet, 2 inches. However, he has an exhibition 64 feet, 6 inch heave to his credit. Another outstanding fresh performer, UCLA's versatile Milford Dahl, is ready to go in the mile and 880. He has already tied the Brubabe mile record of 4:14.5 and last week set a new UCLA frosh record of 9:19.4 in the two-mile. Although the Trojans are heavy favorites to win the varsity meet, Coaches Mortenson and Drake are both predicting red-hot individual duels in most events. SPORTS FACTS Golf's Money Makers NEW YORK (UPI) — Ben Hogan has been the leading money winner in gold three times since 1942, but Ted Kroll made almost as much—when he banked $72.835 for winning his only money title in 1956.
