B-10—Anaheim (Cal.) Bulletin Wednesday, April 29, 1958 Sammy Weiss Joins Del Mar Race Field Sammy Weiss of Sacramento yesterday joined the swelling field for the Del Mar Sports Car Races Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3, and will guide his famous German Porsche RSK, the only car of its kind in America. This is the RSK that Weiss drove to second place in the 150-mile international Grand Prix at Pomona in March, and the one that Jean Behra of France brought to this country for the 200-mile United States Grand Prix at Riverside Raceway last October 5. Behra wheeled the little giant to fourth place overall at Riverside outfishing domestic and imported machinery of twice the engine size. Weiss later outbid a host of eager bidders to become the owner. Grid Contest Player Selection Set Tonight Orange County North-South game officials, fresh from a session on game rules, face a busy week as they meet tonight to pick the South Team and tomorrow to select the North squad. Two major changes in traditional high school football rules highlighted the recent game meeting as the coaches voted to extend the game time from 12 to 15 minute quarters and add the two point conversion. Both rule changes are designed to heighten the games crowd appeal as officials opinioned that the lengthier quarters would give county fans more chance to see their stars in action. The optional one or two point conversion is also expected to add to the color of the game. Players selected tonight and tomorrow open practice with an international Grand Prix at Pomona in March, and the one that Jean Behra of France brought to this country for the 200-mile United States Grand Prix at Riverside Raceway last October 5. Behra wheeled the little giant to fourth place overall at Riverside outfishing domestic and imported machinery of twice the engine size. Weiss later outbid a host of eager bidders to become the owner. Last Race In his last race, Weiss was second in the Stockton sports car main event April 19 to Jack Flaherty's big British Lister-Jaguar. In the Del Mar 30-lap main event on Sunday, May 3, for modified cars of under 200cc, Weiss will clash with Jack McAfee of Hollywood, 1950 West Coast King of this division. McAfee drives a Porsche Spyder RS, owned by Betty Shutes. The two-day Del Mar 10-event race meet is sponsored by the Sports Car Club of America with Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Arizona regions cooperating. Speckens Joins Jim Speckens of Phoenix has joined the production class with his Alfa-Veloce, while Tom Landin and Lee Snodgrass fired a challenge at Andy Porterfield and Fred Grant by entering Corvettes. Race officials are planning a special Corvette race with so many as the coaches voted to extend the game time from 12 to 15 minute quarters and add the two point conversion. Both rule changes are designed to heighten the games crowd appeal as officials opinioned that the lengthier quarters would give county fans more chance to see their stars in action. The optional one or two point conversion is also expected to add to the color of the game. Players selected tonight and tomorrow open practice with an equipment issue and photo day, August 1 and the first contract work will be slated for the 3. Practices will be held on the Brea and Tustin High School campuses from August 3 to 13 on a two day basis. The game is scheduled for the night of August 14, in the Santa Ana Bowl. Proceeds of the game are to benefit the Big Brothers of Orange County, Inc. Feller by the name of John Simone is well known around Anaheim. Recently he has had as many problems as Joe Bitsplik in 'Lil Abner's comical strip. All Johnny needs is a perpetual cloud over his noggin. John has made quite a reputation as a bowler in Orange County. He also flies a helicopter. Made quite a reputation with his whirly-bird and heliport too. (Never bother me with his 'copter... I live six miles from the heliport.) Just returned from St. Louis with John Simone, and I can list his many-fold problems: 1. He bowled some miserable scores when he first arrived in St. Lou. 2. He was locked out in the hallway of the beautiful Chase hotel with only his shorts on, and ladies of the matronly type heading his way. 3. He bowled beautifully in the Masters Tournament, ending 52nd in the qualifying round. 51 bowlers are taken into the finals. 4. He finally got into the finals of the Masters (being first alternate), but was bumped less than ten seconds before squad time, when the original bowler showed up. 5. Upon returning home to Anaheim, the heliport was put out of ous Bill Lillard of the reknowned Budweiser team ... Being first alternate (Bill Lillard was second alternate), meant that John had to sweat it-out for six hours waiting to see if a Masters finalist was going to fail to show up. Finally, the last squad was ready to go. Simone and Lillard were called in, when two men failed to arrive. They were told that once they throw a practice ball, they could not be kicked out. The Orange County Frenchmen set an all-time record in throwing the first practice ball, eclipsing 17 seconds off a ten-year time! John and Lillard each went on to throw seven (of eight) practice frames. Suddenly a commotion arose, as the two tardy original bowlers came flying into the St. Louis Armory. After a lengthy discussion of the big-wigs, Simone and Lillard were given the heave-ho ... and believe me, between the St. Louis sportswriters and several others, this situation will be talked about for a long time... Professional Cage Franchise Seen for Los Angeles in '61 NEW YORK (UPI)—The National Basketball Association was expected to announce shortly details of its plans for a Chicago franchise that will be added to the league for the 1960-61 season and a Los Angeles franchise for 1961-62. League president Maurice Podoloff announced Tuesday night that plans for a Chicago team are nearing completion and that Los Angeles will "definitely" join the league one year after Chicago. Both teams will be added to the present league structure, rather than involve transfers of existing franchises, Podoloff said. The Los Angeles announcement was hailed by Bing Crosby, a backer of the team, in a telegram to Podoloff. The crooner assured the league president of his belief that "Los Angeles will support pro basketball in a major league fashion just as it has supported major league baseball."
