Downtown Retail Merchants Against Relocation of Anaheim City Hall Anaheim's Downtown Retail Executive Committee went on record yesterday morning as unanimously against the relocation of the Anaheim City Hall governmental offices away from the downtown area. The committee based their reasoning and action on the obvious devaluation of property that would result from withdrawal of city offices from their present location. Chairman Louis Phillips pointed out that such cities as Los Angeles and Santa Ana have found it highly beneficial to maintain a healthy core in the downtown area, and that maintaining the city facilities is one of the greatest contributors. Since the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and the City planners are in the throes of planning with an eventual city-wide bond issue for the purpose of enlarging and modernizing the city facilities, it was thought wise to inform the city government of the feeling of the retailers and the downtown property owners. Taxwise, the city would stand to lose a tremendous present income, it was decided, that would not be picked up from outside areas, and, of course, the loss would have to be passed on to the property owners of the city, as a whole, to continue to maintain the city's economic program. In line with their thinking, the Downtown Retail Association is planning an open meeting May 6 at the Anaheim Elks Club with Simon Eisner, planning consultant of the Anaheim planning commission as guest speaker. His talk will feature urban redevelopment and the value of maintaining a healthy downtown business core. The meeting will be open to the general public, and will feature Windy City Dubbing of Chicago Given Airing CHICAGO (UPI) — The Indiana spelled Chicago "Checagou," "Shikago" and "Chicagou," but the name still means "the place of the wild onion smell," says Virgil J. Vogel, a teacher in Chicagou Harper High School. Writing in "Illinois History," Vogel said despite many theories about the city's name, evidence indicates that the Miami Indian named it for the wild onions which once grew abundantly in the area. whole, to continue to maintain the city's economic program. A Los Angeles couple, Arthur and Ione Miller, are seeking the damages for injuries received in a crash on Orangethorpe and Grand in Buena Park Dec. 1, 1957. Defendants in the case are Clarence Striegel and his 16-year-old son, Leroy, both of 8331 Mango Way. The car was reportedly driven by the youth. It was a rear end crash. Las Vegas Ceremonial Scheduled By Shriners The greatest Shrine caravan in Al Malakah Temple history will leave Los Angeles Friday, May 1, for Los Vegas by trains, planes and buses to attend a Stag Ceremonial over the week end, May 1, 2 and 3. INDONESIANS PROVE LOVE THROUGH THEFT LOMBOK, Indonesia (UPI) — It's the marrying season on this East Indonesian island and the time of year when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love—and stealing. In neighboring Bali, prospective bridegrooms carel only their brides. But here, a young man with marital aims must become a full-fledged thief before he can get a wife who will respect him. Lombok police say this age-old custom causes them plenty of trouble, even though it's not as bad as it used to be. Years ago, a suitor had to swipe a water buffalo to convince the girl and her parents—of his affection and manliness. But, today, he can get by with stealing a rooster. However, many youths want to outdo their fathers. So, if a fellow’s father stole a water buffalo to get his mate, the son feels he must at least get a water buffalo, with a rooster for good measure. A youth who does not have enough courage to steal sometime winds up unmarried because the girls take this stealing serious. Professor Airs Views On Assistance Agencies BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI) — A University of California social welfare professor believes California’s public assistance agencies need some help themselves. Kermit T. Wiluse, concluding a study on the public assistance worker, said most such agencies are improperly staffed to do an effective job of "motivating" their applicants toward self-help and readjustment. "It is futile to expect the average untrained and overburdened public assistance worker to do an effective job," said Wiltse. "Eligible public assistance administration in California must be given the legislative support and funds to fulfill the purposes expressed in the law or else the trend of legislation should be reversed. Each additional statutory provision that leads to a broader concept of the objectives of the public assistance programs only widens the gap between what the administration is expected to achieve and what the current staff can actually do."
