Godfrey Tells Feelings Over Pending Editors note: The following was written by Arthur Godfrey in his room at Harkness Pavilion, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York. It was made available to the press through Columbia Broadcasting System. By ARTHUR GODFREY NEW YORK (UPI) — Several reporters have asked the same question on three different occasions during the last 24 hours: How do I feel? All I could say was: I feel fine. And physically I do. In fact, I feel very well. I have no pain of any kind, my pulse is a nice, slow, steady 72 and my blood pressure an unexciting 118 or 120 over 80. For an old cracked-up Irish ruin due to be 56 in August, that's pretty good. Mentally, however, I'm a mess. You've heard of mixed emotions? Man, this is rough. No pain anywhere—look good—feel good—but some of the best brains in the medical profession have discovered a "thing" in my left lung. Can't tell what it is—this thing—but whatever it is, it doesn't belong there. It must be removed. REPLACES MAO — Moscow-trained Liu Shao-chi (above), Red China's No. 2 Communist, has been elected chairman of the People's Republic, replacing aging Mao Tsetung. Mao voluntarily relinquished the post, but retained chairmanship of the Chinese Communist Party. Pope John Shown ‘Shaking’ Vatican Traditions Now By DANIEL F. Traditions Now By DANIEL F. GILMORE United Press International VATICAN CITY (UPI) — The man who six months ago today "with trembling and fear" accepted his election as spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic church is fast becoming known as "Pope John the Innovator." The rotund, jolly-faced Pope John, son of peasant farmers, had hardly ascended the Throne of St. Peter before it was apparent that some of the traditions of the Papacy were in for a good, healthy shaking up. The new pope's predecessor was a quiet, shy and ascetic Pontiff who became known as "The Pope of Peace." He went along with the centuries-old traditions of the Vatican, which dictated that every thing always be done in the same slow way. But it appears today, at the midpoint in Pope John's first year as leader of the world's half a billion Catholics, that the Vatican is over its initial shock and is adjusted to the Pontiff's striking informality, genuine warmth of personality, and his curiosity that often leads him into such places as the Vatican garage to see what the mechanics are doing. Pope John has swiftly demonstrated he has ideas of his own and big plans for his Papacy. New Cardinals Named Only 13 days after his coronation he named 23 new cardinals and brought the strength of the Sacred College of Cardinals up to an unprecedented 75 members. The death of one cardinal later reduced the complement to 74. The Pontiff also let it be known that the Sacred College would have a lot more to do with decision-making in the Vatican. He considers the College of Cardinals a "Senate." On Jan. 25 the new Pope did some more "work" that had worldwide reverberations. He summoned an Ecumenical Council of Bishops and other religious leaders of the world to study means of winning back to the church Eastern, Protestant and other Christian sects. Noted religious leaders of all denominations gave a surprisingly warm response to the call. When the council is held, late next year or early in 1961, it will be the first in nearly 90 years. The Communists, who had quietly spread the word to its press to "go easy" on Pope John because he wasn't interested in politics soon found out he would vigorously fight them. NOTED RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF ALL DENOMINATIONS GAVE A SURPRISELY WARM RESPONSE TO THE CALL. WHEN THE COUNCIL IS HOLD, LATE NEXT YEAR OR EARLY IN 1961, IT WILL BE THE FIRST IN NEarly 90 YEARS. THE COMMUNISTS, WHO HAD QUIETLY SPREAD THE WORD TO ITS PRESS TO "GO EASY" ON POPE JOHN BECAUSE HE WASN'T INTERESTED IN POLITICS SOON FOUND OUT HE WOULD VIGOROUSLY FIGHT THEM. I have no pain of my pulse is a nice, by 72 and my blood unexciting 118 or 120 for an old cracked-up due to be 56 in August, by good. However, I'm a mess. Kind of mixed emotions? It's rough. No pain any-ask good — feel good — of the best brains in all profession have dis-thing" in my left lung: what it is — this thing never it is, it doesn't ce. It must be removed. If it's a benign tumor some sort, hurray for our side —no more sweat. If the damn thing is malignant —cancerous —then there's real trouble. Maybe have to take the whole lung out. Well, even that's not too bad. Lots of folks are walking around with only one lung these days. Such skillful and timely surgery has prolonged the life of many a man. I won't mind one bit just so long as it doesn't cripple me up so that I can't ride or swim or fly. (I've been doing pretty well with my tinhip for some time now —it's amazing how much pain you can learn to ignore). Just so I can mount up and go bucketing across country with Mary, it'll be just learning to ride "cuttin' hooses," too, so we can help work the cattle, and that's the most fascinating business in the world. Yes, we've been building that farm for 25 years. There we have planned to hunt and fish and swim and ride and prune and nurse the trees and shrubs and vines we've planted. To breed all these things we had planned to do and now there is this "thing." Suddenly, out of nowhere. Never felt better in my life. Then, boom: This "thing." This horrible, skulking "thing." visible only as a ghostly shadow. CLOGGED UP DRAINS? EMERGENCIES—CALL US!! Ph. Day KE 5-6105—Night KE 5-4279 BILL WARD, The Plumber — 246 E.
