Hormel Company Receives Humane Approval Seal
Hormel Company of Austin, Minn. today became the first packinghouse with nationwide distribution to receive the American Humane Association's seal of approval for humane processing of all major food animals.
The presentation was made at the spring board meeting by Charles W. Friedrich, president of the association, and accepted by M. B. Thompson, executive vice president of Geo. A. Hormel and Co.
"One of the most outstanding contributions to humane slaughter methods was made by Geo. A. Hormel and Co. when it developed and installed the first carbon dioxide immobilization chamber for hogs in 1952," said Mr. Friedrich.
"The initiative shown by Hormel administration in developing the CO2 chamber has been a prime factor in stimulating other progressive packers to adopt improved methods."
The Hormel company March 24 last completed facilities by which lamb and calves were given anesthesia before shackling and dispatching. It pioneered this method with hogs in 1952, first in the world to do so. It began to use the bolt gun for stunning cattle in 1957.

Mack Sennett Names Two Best Funny Bones
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Mack Sennett, who taught Hollywood how to be funny, says Jacques Tati and Shirley MacLaine are the best comedians in the movie business.
Sennett, 78, who introduced slapstick and bathing beauties to films, said: "Tati is the greatest pantomimist since the three I consider the best — Charlie Chapin, Stan Laurel and W. C. Fields. Shirley is the greatest comedienne since Mabel Normand and Marie Dressler, and good comediennes are as scarce as hen's teeth."
Sennett, whose Keystone Cops once convulsed the nation, named his other favorite comedians of today: Danny Kaye, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Joe E. Brown, Lucille Ball, Gale Storm, Red Buttons, Cantinflas and Gracie Fields.

Around Hollywood
By Vernon Scott
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—The headline in “Variety” — a movietown trade paper—might read: “Kitt Quits Club Kick.”
Translation: Negro songstress Eartha Kitt is departing the nightclub circuit.
The quavery-voiced singer prefers the concert stage and Broadway to barnstorming around the country warbling above the din of nightclub drunks, butter - fingered waiters and dog acts. So she just up and quit.
“My whole act and personality depend on the attention of the audience,” the nut-brown Eartha explained. “My voice is low key and low in volume, which makes it impossible sometimes to be heard in clubs.
“The noise is terrible in a nightclub. People are eating, drinking, laughing aand smoking. Then there’s always some little man in the crowd who is determined to talk throughout the show.
Many Reasons For Action
“I never answer hecklers, but they’re another source of trouble. Put them all together, and my reasons for quitting the club circuit add up to good sense. I may return someday, but not now.”
While she talked, Eartha prepared lunch in the room kitchen of her Beverly Hills home. She has a full-time maid who doesn’t know how to cook, which doesn’t seem to bother Eartha at all.
“In June I leave here for a concert tour,” she went on, slicing tomatoes into a salad.
“The trend among popular artists these days is to give night-club acts in concert halls — like Harry Belafonte, Judy Garland, Roger Williams and some of the others are doing. But not me. My concerts are entirely different from my nitery act.
“I sing different songs. And the sound, placement and projection of my voice change. My concerts take an hour and a half, compared with 45 minutes in a club.”
Eartha admitted she would earn less money concertizing, but added that she wasn’t particularly interested in amassing a fortune.
“I’d rather work harder and make less money and be happy,” she said, cutting some celery into the salad. “I’ll only perform twice a week on the tour, compared with twice a night in clubs.”
Eartha’s decision to pull out of the bistro beat was prompted by a beef two months in Boston when she walked out on a club date.
“Nobody ever heard my part of the story,” she said. “I was sick and fatigued. But no one ever believes a star can be ill. They think it’s temperament.”
Women Make Better Bartenders Than Men
NEW YORK (UPI) — Women better students of bartending than men because they are "neat and more adept with their hands, have better memories and don't slip."
The authority for this statement John Boning, who has operated Bartenders School in New York more than 25 years,More than 1000 students have completed school's five-week course and out one-fourth of them were women.
Boning said: "Women make better bartender students, as a rule, because they're more cared about their own appearance and the appearance of their bars. They are better with their hands than men and can make drinks with a minimum of shadow boxing."
Give a woman a drink recipe and she'll never forget it. And another thing—they mind their own business."
At school, the students wrk with artificial devices: colored water for whiskey and wine, sand instead of sugar and marbles for lives and cherries.
"Off campus," Boning added, "the men students prefer scotch and martinis while the co-eds go for 'something chic, such as cognac and French champagne."
Put them all together, and my reasons for quitting the club circuit add up to good sense. I may return someday, but not now."
While she talked, Eartha prepared lunch in the roomy kitchen of her Beverly Hills home. She has a full-time maid who doesn't know how to cook, which doesn't seem to bother Eartha at all.
"In June I leave here for a concert tour," she went on, slicing tomatoes into a salad.
"The trend among popular artists these days is to give nighttime."
