A-2—Anheim (CoL.) Bulletin Monday, April 27, 1959 TV in Review By WILLIAM EWALD United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) — Like the contemporary gift shop, "Meet Me In St. Louis" — presented as a two-hour special Sunday night on CBS-TV — Is a tasseled container for the cute, the cuddly, the canning. It stocks on its shelves: A grandpa who wears a beret, a little sister who catacombs her life with dead dolls, a father who trips on roller skates, a mother with the patience of Albert Schweitzer, two souffle romances, lollipop picnics and parties and a young beau who looks like Tab Hunter and behold! — turns out, in fact, to be Tab Hunter. "Meet Me In St. Louis" is, of course, an urban pastorale — an idyllic treatment of city rustics—and director George Schaefer wisely decided to play it that way. Over two hours, it was a terribly tough vehicle to keep charged because it packed no real conflicts, no tensions — it was merely a flow of incidents held together by vanilla iceing — but I would say Schaefer succeeded fairly well in pushing its simmering charm along. He was helped a good deal by some amiable Hugh Martin-Ralph Blaine tunes — "The Trolley Song," "Skip To My Lou" and "The Boy Next Door" — and by some Duane McKinney sets that had a nice sense of wedding cake with temples in chalk. splicing of soft-shoe, and one of those jazz ballet things in which everyone hukks around like syncopated dybbooks. Kelly, who works well with youngsters, capered briefly with five-year-old Cherylene Lee and 13-year-old Liza Minelli, who is Judy Garland's daughter. Both segments were moderately agreeable, if not precisely adventurous. One sequence in which Kelly postured while Carl Sandburg crooned was ludicrous. Kelly had three foreign dancers on board — Claude Bessay, Judith Dornys and Gerd Andersson—and a fine, leggy set of females they were. However, like Kelly, their talents weren't put to much of a test. Short Shots: "Professor Tim," an Abbey Theater movie offered by NBC-TV's Omnibus, was a four-partige—a hackneyed plot, stock characters and directed far too stagily. Jean Shepperd's Chicago White Sox routine on the NBC-TV Steve Allen Show was the comedy highlight of the week end. Poor Dody Goldman has certainly had her troubles the past couple of seasons — Sunday night the CBS-TV Ed Sullivan Show went off the air right in the middle of her routine. The Channel Swim: ABC-TV will ax its daytime quiz. Play Hour Hunch, and replace it on May 11 with a five-a-week version of Mike Stokey's Pantomime Quiz—the new version of the charade. The outgoing chairman, who announced some time ago that he did not plan to seek re-election, stains full power in Red China and chairman of the Communist party. The post of "chairman of the public," roughly corresponding president, has traditionally been largely a ceremonial position in Red China as it is in Russia. Liu's selection for the job suggests it may be more important the future. China experts generally have regarded Liu as a more influential figure than Chou En-lai, the lib. suave diplomat who holds the titles of premier and foreign minister. The nomination of two vice chairmen was a new departure. Marshal Chu Teh, the 73-year-old grand old man" of Chinese Communism, was the only vice chairman of the republic while Mao held office. Herter Leaves For Paris Today By STEWART HENSLEY United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) — Secretary of State Christian A. Herter leaves today for Paris to confer with other Western foreign ministers on strategy for dealing with Russia at the Geneva conference May 11. Herter, on his first major mission as a Cabinet officer, will meet Wednesday with British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd, French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville and West German Foreign Minister Heinrich von Brentano. With only three days of discussions scheduled, they will be working against time to resolve their differences over what to propose to Russia as solutions to the Berlin and German problems. High American officials said Herter is counting on the time element to push the Allies toward a strategy agreement which has eluded them in two months of talks in the four Western capitals. Herter's view, according to top informants, is that the Paris session should be prolonged a day or two if he and his colleagues run into difficulties in settling their differences. The new secretary, who was reported to have been urged by his predecessor, John Foster Dulles, to steer a firm course both at home and abroad, is scheduled tentatively to return to Washington Sunday. He will leave again about May 8 for Geneva. ANDERSON Unified Press International SACRAMENTO (UPI) — Rival measures to settle North-South water differences and a pair of key tax bills awaited Assembly action today. As the Legislature passed the two-thirds mark in the 120-day session, these measures were pending in the lower house: AB1173 by Thomas J. MacBride (D-Sacramenta), introduced at the request of Gov. Edmund G. Brown. The bill would boost the state's share of horse racing revenues by $12,400,000 a year by taking 15 cent out of every dollar bet instead of 13 cents. AB1176 by MacBride, also the governor's bill. It would boost inheritance taxes on distant relatives and unrelated beneficiaries by four million dollars. ACA26 by Bruce F. Allen (R-Los Gatos) provides contracts for sale of water and power could not be changed except by a two-third vote of both houses of the Legislature. It sets forth as state policy that the Legislature shall make binding contracts for the sale of water and power. ACA33 by Assemblyman Carley V. Porter (D-Compton). Porter's bill also contains the two-thirds vote clause but in addition authorizes the Legislature to issue bonds to finance the Feather River Project and to develop water projects in Northern, Central and Southern California. Porter's measure embodies Southern California policy that a guarantee of the validity of water contracts and financing must go 10 Drown in East; Boy Swept Over Niagara Falls United Press International Ten persons were believed drowned in Washington and Illinois boating mishaps Sunday and a 3-year-old boy was swept to his death over Niagara Falls. Six persons drowned and a seventh was missing and believed dead when a yacht with 12 persons aboard capsized in Puget Sound off Seattle. Five of the victims' bodies were found in the 43-foot yacht "Lois Ann" when it was towed ashore and a sixth victim was dead on arrival at a hospital. Coast Guard boats, a private craft and a Navy helicopter combined to rescue the survivors. The victims, all from Tacoma, were identified as Lois Ann Johnson, 13; Janna Lynn Tayet, 3 months; Reuben Torgerson, 70; and Mrs. Torgerson; Fritz Tayet, 44, a Tacoma junior high school principal, and Mrs. Tayet. Missing and presumed drowned was Martin Tayet, 81, father of Tayet. At Springfield, Ill., two men and a woman drowned but two little girls were saved when their boat overturned in the Sangamon River. Authorities recovered the body of Ernest Ryan, 37, Springfield, Sunday, and sought the bodies of Shirley Meyer, 22 and Van Wright 28 both of Jonesboro. Witnesses to the mishap pulled Barbara Beel, Springfield, and Loretta Davis, both 5, to safety. Thomas Bradbury, 3 Niagara falls, drowned Sunday when he tumbled into the Niagara River and was carried over the falls before he resumed his language, as usual, to Cochise University students. Try to explain what we have how to keep it." Human, delivering the inaugural William Radner Lectures on public law and government, will present today on "The Presidency." Tuesday on "The Constitution" and Wednesday on "Hyschael and Witch Hunting." The lectureship was established by the Radner Family Foundation Chevy Chase, Md. William Radner, a graduate ofumbia and of the university's New School, was a government officer who died in 1951 at the age of 43. Each of the former president's lectures will begin at 10 a.m. and 30 minutes. They are to be bowed by question and answerods. The questions will be put to human by a panel of six students selected because of their academic standings. There will be a different panel of six students at each lecture. ACA33 by Assemblyman Carley V. Porter (D-Compton). Porter's bill also contains the two-thirds vote clause but in addition authorizes the Legislature to issue bonds to finance the Feather River Project and to develop water projects in Northern Central and Southern California. Porter's measure embodies Southern California policy that a guarantee of the validity of water contracts and financing must go hand in hand. Allen holds to the theory that the less bonds used in building the FRP the better because bond financing interest rates will make the ultimate cost of the project twice as much. Estimates of the cost of the FRP already run upwards of two billion dollars. Governor Brown has endorsed a bond issue of 956 million dollars but never has committed himself on the subject of a constitutional amendment on water contracts.
