Public Schools, Democracy Go Hand in Hand Says Educator, Chairman of Public Schools No more vital institution is designed to promote, maintain, and preserve democracy in America than our public schools system, declared Dr. Vierling Kersey, noted educator and state chairman of public schools for 1950. In a statement prepared for the observance of the 40th annual Public Schools Week in California April 27 through May 2, he said: "To the degree personal freedom of worship, work, thought, and speech is important to you and your children, to that same degree is our great public schools system vital." "Public schools are dedicated to the purpose of teaching young Americans to respect a person for what he achieves by himself, no matter from what high or low social and economic or racial station he may spring." The educator serves as chairman of the Public Schools Committee of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of California, which originated Public Schools Week. Whatever the school the children of our community attend may be, SA Mayor Is Chairman of UCP Campaign Mayor Dale H. Heinly of Santa Ana has accepted the chairmanship for the United Cerebral Palsy 1959 fundraising campaign. He was the first state president of Cerebral Palsy after the reorganization, in which he was instrumental in combining the northern and southern California groups into one organization. He was a director of the National Cerebral Palsy two years from Orange County and two years from the state, and he served one year as a board member of the state organization. He has served in Cerebral Palsy from 1954 to 1957, but because of the pressure of his work as mayor has been inactive as far as holding office. However, his complete education for every member of society in the United States of America is provided by the best of public schools," he said. "As go the schools of our nation, so will be the stability of our society," he concluded. Theme for this year's observance of Public Schools Week is "Keep faith with our country — Know and support the public schools." Members of the Public Schools Committee of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of California are: Dr. Kersey, chairman, Van Nuys; George K. Palmer, San Diego; Perry Barrettt Long Beach; Cyril Weeks, San Francisco; George C. Holstein Fresno; Jes Sheegog, Santa Barbara; Sy Dennis, Jr., Sacramento, and Lawrence E. Crowe Cupertino. The mayor also said that it is hoped every citizen of Orange County will get behind this drive—the first one ever conducted by the UCP in this area — and make it the success that it should be. The winning girl, chosen as the girl at Western High School who represents the finest in Tri-Hi-Y standards, will be presented at the first "Enchanted Dream Ball" to be held at the Ebell Club House in Anaheim this Saturday night. Candidates include Sheryl Mercer, Laurie Currie, Terry Hess, Sharon Skogland, Kathy Tennant and Chris Wiley. The formal dance is sponsored by the Western YMCA Women's Committee and is a courtesy extended to Tri-Hi-Y members at Western High School and their dates. The group plan to make the Enchanted Dream Ball an annual program feature, varying the theme of the dream, but retaining the pattern of electing a Dream Girl each year. This year's ball will be built around an oriental dream, with room decorations, invitations, and dance programs carrying the oriental motif. Serving on the planning committee are Mesdamer: Robert Franks, Harold Shirk, Gene Houser, DeWitt Ethridge, Paul Williams, James White, Paul Bevington and Mrs. Betty Jane Troy.
