Dear Abby... You ARE a Little Square by Abigail Van Buren DEAR ABBY: A neighbor of mine asked me to keep her two-year-old child while she went on a trip to "see her sick mother" — she said. When she got back she never mentioned her mother but told me how much fun she had with a soldier she met there. She gave this soldier MY name and address and now letters are coming addressed to me on the outside but when you open the envelope there is another one inside, sealed and addressed to her. I have no intention of helping a married woman carry on an affair like this. How can I keep out of it? NO GO-BETWEEN DEAR NO GO: Tell your neighbor that you want no part of this monkey business and if any more letters come for her, addressed to you, you'll return them to the sender. DEAR ABBY: Can you hold a man responsible for what he says on his wedding night? My husband made all sorts of promises to me and never kept any of them. The minor ones like taking over the payments on my car did not hurt me so much, but he said he would never love anyone else but me, and he's been seen all over town with other girls. Can you help me? MAHRIED SEVEN MONTHS DEAR MARRIED: More important than what he "said" on his WEDDING NIGHT are the vows he took on his WEDDING DAY. You can hold him responsible, but you'd better start thinking seriously about how you can hold him, period. DEAR ABBY: My best girlfriend and her boyfriend broke up after school at 3:30 and at 4:00 o'clock he asked me to go steady. I told him I would have to ask my mother and he should call me after supper. He called me at 7:00 p.m. and I told him I couldn't talk my mother into it yet but if he waited until tomorrow I would have the answer for him. In the meantime, my girlfriend called me up and told me to hurry up and get permission because she had a chanoe to go steady with another guy, but she promised her old boyfriend she wouldn't leave him with nobody. I can't get my mother's permission to go steady and my girlfriend wants to change steadies, so what am I supposed to do? IN THE MIDDLE DEAR IN: Tell your girlfriend if she wants to change steadies to go ahead but she has no right promising her old boyfriend a new girlfriend and asking you to be it. Their presence was requested by foreman Glenn Lewis of Fullerton. This will be the first appearance Anaheim Legion Plea Tabled by Supervisors SANTA ANA (OCNS) — County supervisors have again tabled a request of the Anaheim American Legion Post for endorsement of a "Bill of Rights of Mental Freedom." Already approved by the legion post, the "Bill of Rights" would amend the state constitution so that civil rights of mental patients would receive additional protection. The bill of rights which supervisors have been asked to endorse alleges that mentally ill persons can now be arrested without a warrant, transported across state lines without their consent, and are subject to other abuses of civil rights. Supervisor Willis Warner commented Tuesday that if the law permits these abuses, the law, not the constitution, should be changed. OPEN HOUSE SLATED AT FAIRVIEW HOSPITAL The Fairview State Hospital, California's newest treatment facility for the mentally retarded, will hold "Open House" the entire week of April 26th through May 3rd in observance of National Mental Health Week. Plans are to have escorted tours available to those desiring to see the hospital. Tours will be scheduled to start on the hour between 1 and 3, except on Sunday, April 26th and May 3rd, when evening tours will be available at 6 and 7. Sunday program also will include educational movies, question and answer periods and refreshments following each of the tours. The Fairview State Hospital is located on Harbor Blvd., in Orange County, immediately north of the town of Costa Mesa and south of the Orange Coast College. walkalong 13'95 WALKALONG VIA FLORENTINE! At the Clutch Exchange in Denver, Colorado, all restrictions have just been removed on when employees can take vacations during the year. At Molson's Brewery in Toronto, Canada, plant employees with three or more years' seniority are to start getting one extra week of vacation during the fall or winter period — in addition to the regular vacation of two weeks during the summer. Soon, the peak vacation season of the year will be on. You're only a normal employee if during these exquisite weeks you're spending a lot of minutes (at your desk as well as away from it) daydreaming about your coming holiday. And you're also only normal if you're spending more minutes wondering how your vacation setup compares with that of millions of other employees in offices and factories. Here, therefore, is the pattern of 1950 vacation policies, drawn from a study by Dartnell Corp., of Chicago, of practices among large and small organizations in all types of business and industry. Throughout the United States and Canada, vacation policies are perceptibly liberalized this year. "Not one company reports a retrenchment in vacation allowances," Dartnell Corp. says. Among its own corporation clients, "All changes made are leaning toward a liberalizing policy." Three significant vacation policy trends are apparent: More and more corporations are giving employees with seniority additional vacation allowances. The "most common" change is the addition of a third week of vacation for employees with 15 or more years of service. A few companies are adding a fourth week for 25 years of service. Others are giving a third week after five, 10 or 20 years on the job. More and more managements are extending the vacation period throughout the year. In its 1958 survey Dartnell found 65 per cent of the companies permitted vacations at any time in the year. Its 1959 survey shows 72 per cent favoring a year - round holiday scheduling time. And more and more companies are adopting lenient attitudes toward split vacations. Last year 50 per cent of the companies in the Dartnell survey reported policies permitting employees to split their vacations. This year nearly 70 per cent say they allow splitting. There is no doubt about it. The trend toward longer, more frequent, any - time - of - the-year vacations is becoming increasingly powerful. The once extraordinary four - weeks - a - year vacation is spreading in plants as well as offices. It is this vacation background which explains the ever - rising volume of holiday travel to new peaks year after year. In 1959 it's already certain that Americans Serviors to Face Grand Jury Questions The County News service members of the County supervisors are to appear May 14, before the 1950 yr. presence was requested by Lenn Lewis of Fullerton. Be the first appearance ward before the current grand jury. Last year, various supervisors were chided by the jurors for slowness in providing additional jail facilities, and in not providing a geriatrics building at the county hospital. Other testimony of supervisors before last year's jury concerned their role in the county's leasing of its tideland oil deposits. Here, therefore, is the pattern of 1950 vacation policies, drawn from a study by Dartnell Corp., of Chicago, of practices among large and small organizations in all types of business and industry. Throughout the United States and Canada, vacation policies are perceptibly liberalized this year. "Not one company reports a retrenchment in vacation allowances," Dartnell Corp. says in an analysis privately circulated There is no doubt about it. The once extraordinary four - weeks - a - year vacation is spreading in plants as well as offices. It is this vacation background which explains the ever - rising volume of holiday travel to new peaks year after year. It's already sure that 1958's peak of 90,000,000 American travelers within our borders spending over $15 billion will be beaten in 1959. And it is this vacation background which is spurring industries catering to holiday-goers to new heights, sending all types of leisure-time activities into an explosive boom. A final point for your daydream comparisons: This year both Memorial Day and Independence Day—fall on,Sat. — an accident of the calendar which gives one zero pleasure. But more than one-third of a cross-section of another 270 companies in 38 states surveyed by Dartnell say they're allowing clerical employees a day off either the Friday before or Monday after each holiday. More than one-quarter are doing the same for plant workers. And well over half will give workers whose vacations include these holiday weekends, an extra day or extra pay or a choice of either a day or pay. (Distributed 1959 by The Hall Syndicate, Inc.)
