Assuming that Hawaii does not formally enter the Union by July 4 this year, a 50 Star Flag Stamp will be issued one year later, July 4, 1960. Bunker Hill Monument and the flag adopted by Massachusetts at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War will be featured on the 2½ cent regular postage stamp, to be issued at Boston June 17, 1959. The Wording "Bunker Hill" is arranged in two lines in the upper right hand corner, and the "2½ cent U.S. Postage" is in one line across the bottom, all of which is shown in white face Gothic. For those of us who do not know our history too well, the Battle of Bunker Hill was the first significant engagement in the American War of Independence, and was fought June 17, 1775. Approximately 2,500 British Red Coats were opposed by 1,500, and often, by less Americans. It was at this engagement that the famous words "Don't Shoot Until You See the Whites Of Their Eyes" was coined by the American General, Joseph Warren. The Americans, though greatly outnumbered, repulsed the enemy twice, but the third time they lost the battle. This battle, though lost, was important in that it had a great moral effect on the Colonist, proving to them that untrained and 111 equipped troops could stand up to the superbly trained and well armed British regulars. This battle, no doubt, proved to the Colonists that they did have a very good chance to win their independence. In 1843 a monument, 221 feet high, in the form of an obelisk, of Guincy granite, was completed on Breed's Hill, known as Bunker Hill, to commemorate the battle. Stamp collectors wishing first day cover cancellations should send their envelopes, with remittance, to the Postmaster, Boston, 9 Mass., and mark the outside of their envelopes "First Day Covers 2½ cent Stamp." Effective about April 26, airmail service will be inaugurated by North Central Airlines at Appleton, Wisconsin. An official cachet will be furnished for the first flight from Appleton. Rogue River, Oregon, will have a special cancellation April 20 through June 20, with the wording "National Rooster Crow Annual Event Rogue River, Oregon." The designs for the St. Lawrence seaway commemorative postage stamps to be issued jointly by Canada and the United States were released simultaneously in Washington, D. C., and Ottawa, Canada, by their respective postmasters. Except for the necessary differences in captions and denominations, the stamps are identical in design, and the results of the cooperative efforts of the American and Canadian artists. 'Serious' Crop Pest Found in California SACRAMENTO (UPI)—A species of thrips new to California has been reported found on Russian thistle in Riverside County, according to state entomologist Robert W. Harper. Harper said the serious crop pest, a native of Africa and the Middle East, also has been reported in San Bernardino, Imperial, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The tiny insects attacks lettuce, cabbage, citrus, potatoes, alfalfa, petunias, asters, roses, dandelions and various grasses and has been "identified with severe damage to lettuce in New Mexico," Harper said. "It is too early to say whether it will prove to be of economic importance in California," Harper said, "but close observation of this pest certainly is justified." Truman Will Appear On Closed Circuit TV Bash INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (UPI)—A New York television crew is shooting scenes for a "This Is Your Life, Harry Truman" type of show. The film will be included in a 90-minute closed-circuit television show scheduled to be beamed nationwide May 8 in celebration of Truman's 75th birthday. Said It Couldn't Be Doe BUFFALO, N. Y. PLUMBING Dependable Repair West must consider what East would do with the various hands that he might hold. It is possible to work out East's length in diamonds. Suppose East started with five diamonds. He would shift to the king of diamonds at the second trick, but would he then lead a low diamond? East knows that West has more than two diamonds. (If West had only A-x of diamonds, he would overtake the king and return a diamond at once.) If East has five diamonds and knows that West has three diamonds, it is clear to him that South can have only two diamonds. In that case, surely, East would be eager to cash the king and then the queen of diamonds in order to be able to switch back to clubs after getting precisely two diamond tricks. But East didn't continue with the queen of diamonds. Therefore, he cannot have a five-card diamond suit. Having thought thus far with East's brains, West has solved the problem. He must lead another diamond. This defeats the contract. Daily Question As dealer, you hold: spades Q 6, hearts A Q J 95, diamonds J 94, clubs Q 74. What do you say? Answer: Pass. You have enough points, but you don't have enough tricks for a bid. Avoid counting unsupported queens and jacks for a borderline opening bid. (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.)
