We always hear a lot of controversy about which is better to have, the pure-bred dog or the mixed breed. What do you think? And why do you think so?
The one thing we've found that most people tend to neglect in caring properly for their dogs is the matter of cleaning up the area. The area in which the dog runs and plays should be cleaned of droppings every day. It's degrading to the dog to leave the area dirty, and it will certainly give your dog a good reason to dig out or jump the fence and get away from it.
For you followers of the dog shows, some food for thought ... over 4,000 obedience degrees were won by 91 different breeds of dogs during 1958 — and less than 4,000 Championships were won in the breed rings. German Shepherds lead all other breeds in number of degrees won; poodles (all varieties) in second place; Cocker Spaniels third, Boxers fourth, Collies fifth. If you think obedience trials are not held frequently — in 1958, 467 obedience trials were held in the United States; and that isn't counting the very many practice matches.
For older folks, living alone, children grown and gone — there's no better companion than a dog.
Do you frequently let your dog gnaw bones? You shouldn't — in time, the tooth enamel will wear down, and as the dog gets older his teeth will become useless. An occasional large shin or knuckle bone is fine, but the best way to

Do you frequently let your dog gnaw bones? You shouldn't — in time, the tooth enamel will wear down, and as the dog gets older his teeth will become useless. An occasional large shin or knuckle bone is fine, but the best way to give your dog the healthful content of the bone is by cooking the bone and using the broth in his regular food.
All dogs can swim, but some prefer to stay away from the water. If a dog is introduced to swimming gently and carefully, without forcing, he'll enjoy it — and the exercise is wonderful for him. Neither fresh nor salt water is harmful to his skin or coat. If you find your dog shows a form of skin eczema after a great deal of time in salt water, it's because the eczema already was there, and the salt water aggravated the condition.
Having a dog is fun — but only if the dog is having fun, too.
White Collar Labor Talks Due in County
Recent revisions in U. S. Fair Labor Standards Act regulations concerning white collar employees will be explained to Orange County businessmen and industrialists at a special Wage and Hour Clinic conducted by the Merchants and Manufacturers Association, Thursday at the Greenbrier Inn, Garden Grove.
Russell Parsons, Industrial Relations Consultant of the M and M, will review application of the principal regulations governing hours of work and payment of wages.
Grant W. Canfield, Manager, M and M Orange County Office, 13153 Brookhurst St., Garden Grove, making the announcement, points out "violation of the regulations governing wages and hours can prove very costly to employers."
The special four-hour clinic will provide a discussion of common problems on questions raised by many employers concerning application of the various regulations and the exemptions thereto.
