Brownie Troop Spends Day in Los Angeles
Many people wonder what becomes of the money Brownies and Girl Scouts receive from their cookie sales. Brownie Troop Number 242 used part of their funds to enjoy an experience they will long remember. They took a trip on a train!
Under the direction of their leaders, Mrs. James McIntyre, and Mrs. Glenn Phillips, Troop Number 242 boarded the train at Fullerton, bound for Los Angeles. Their first stop was at the Federal Court Building where they sat in on a trial, next, the girls went to the Weather Bureau and from there to the top of City Hall, which is 25 stories high. From this spot they had a birds eye view of the city.
A cable car ride "The Flight of the Angels," was the next thrill of the day, and then on to Phillippe's for lunch. Finally they went to the famous Olvera Street where they had twenty-five cents to spend for a souvenir.
A tired, but happy, group of Brownies returned to the Union Station to catch their train for home after an exciting day, paid for with money they had earned for themselves.
Hear Talk on Insects
At the meeting of the Fullerton Homemakers, under the direction of Mrs. Marian Prentiss of the Agricultural Extension Service, held in the home of Mrs. A. W. Nash of North Nicolas Avenue, Fullerton, Mrs. R. Gates and Mrs. E. W. Manstrom were the project leaders and presented the subject "Insect Control around the Home."
There are many precautions to take when using insecticides, the leaders warned. Do not eat or smoke while applying the insecticides, do not use oil substances near open flames or hot surfaces.
The control of ants is best done by usine two or three per cent chlordane spray. When attacking moths in clothing use a five percent DDT in stainless kerosene Silverfish eat wall paper, boiling, rayon fabrics, and starched clothes. They are best treated by using five per cent DDT two per cent chlordane, or two per cent deodorized malathion.
