An increasing total of it is flowing into the stocks of foreign corporations traded in the markets of Amsterdam, Rome, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich. Nothing like this scale of buying of foreign stocks by sophisticated investors in our country has occurred since the late ’20s. There is no mistaking the flare-up of world-famous corporations headquartered in West Europe and Britain. And the buying is starting to spill over, spread to investors who only six months ago wouldn’t have considered buying a share of any company not listed on a United States or a leading Canadian stock exchange. Item: A full 25 per cent of the buying of stocks listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange during one recent week was reported to have come from United States customers. Item: A group of top financial experts belonging to the New York Society of Security Analysts is now on an inspection tour of companies in Britain and West Europe. The stated aim of the analysts is to get a first-hand view of corporations whose shares are being most heavily bought and to dig into the concerns’ accounting and tax practices. Before the analysts return next week they will have toured about 30 companies in London, Paris, Milan, Frankfurt, Cologne, Amsterdam. Item: In the last three months of 1958 the biggest single net purchase of stock by 26 major United States mutual funds was Phillips Incandescent Lamp Works, the large Dutch electrical equipment company. Professional public relations firms handling foreign corporation accounts disclose that "dozens" are studying the climb in buying with intense interest, are "comtemplating applying for listing of their shares on the New York Stock Exchange" so they can really woo the American investor. Why the boomlet? An obvious reason is the fear of the smart money men that prices of many of the most popular U.S. stocks have been pushed too high and "better buys" are available elsewhere. The switch to a handful of foreign stocks has sent their prices skyrocketing too, but the investing has persisted. A second reason is the growing belief that West Europe and Britain are in a great economic resurgence and the creation of the Common Market will spur the resurgence and a boom in cars, appliances, all sorts of consumer goods. Leading companies in the areas will, it's believed, profit mightily as a result. A third reason is the easing of currency restrictions, making it simpler for U.S. investors to buy and sell foreign securities. And a fourth reason is the conviction that there will be no war—and the companies favored will not be destroyed by war or nationalization. None of the investors is minimizing the risks. In many instances it's almost impossible to get facts about the company's earnings; accounting practices are exceedingly tricky, tax angles are unfavorable, etc. Nevertheless, smart money has been moving abroad. Dale Tholen Jr., Whittier, was dragged unconscious from the pool Sunday by his 12-year-old neighbor, Jeannine Gibson. Jeannine said that young Tholen, a good swimmer, ate some sour grass growing beside the pool and choked. He disappeared. Delavare has only three counties. Texas has 254.
