He is a graduate of Long Beach Poly High School in Long Beach. Exchange visits between West Point and Annapolis are a well established custom. However, the New London and Colorado Springs academies are participating this year for the first time. This expanded program is a result of the first conference of superintendents of the service academies which was held in New London last April. Center, KE 5-4403 — Free Parking in Rear Bizarre Illnesses Often Show Res By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor NEW YORK (UPI)—Since people often put their resentments into "the language of organs," such as "she gives me a pain in the neck" and "what a headache this job is," it is not surprising their hidden resentments get expressed in the same language — in bizarre illnesses. So advised an authority in psychosomatic science in giving doctors who think of people as "machines" operated by their bodies and chemistry. A close-up view of how very complicated people can be when they produce physical symptoms of illness which have symbolic meaning to their emotions. And doctors can fall for it because "most physicians have been trained to view the patient as a physico-chemical machine," continued Dr. Robert L. Faucett of the Mayo Clinic and Foundation, Rochester, Minn. The symptoms make no sense if you consider the body only a "physico-chemical machine." pecially when examination and laboratory tests reveal no cause for the symptoms. Yet these people stand still for all sorts of tests and examinations, in fact demand them, and go so far as to want surgery. Product Of Conflicts These patients don't recognize but their physical symptoms are caused by the difficulties they have had or are having with other people and their personal situations, he said. They get personal advantages in expressing their conflicts in terms of illness rather than by recognizing them for what they are. For one thing, "the physically ill person is excused from responsibility, blame and failure and treated, at least for a time, with sympathy and kindness." For another, he can pass all responsibility on to the doctor if he describes his difficulties "in terms of the physico-chemical machine." The doctor "could talk directly about the patient's masked and hidden feelings and make the patient aware of their inappropriateness to the present situation," and to the degree he succeeds, "he will diminish the patient's anxiety and give him an opportunity to..." But "the physician is a product of the same culture that produces the patient. He hesitates to listen to a patient's recital of intimate personal events and feelings." Anyway "the power of sugges-tion is greatly over-rated. If pa-tients with emotional problems could be cured of their difficulties by suggestion, so many would not continue to inhabit physicians' offices."
