Chaplin to Play Role Of 'Little Man' Again LONDON (UPI)—Charlie Chaplin is going back to his most famous screen role—the little man with the baggy trousers and the duck-waddle. The comedian, who is 70 Thursday, used to say that he had "killed" the character that made him a world celebrity in favor of such self-written roles as "Monseur Verdoux," "The Great Dictator" and "The King in New York." But, according to the Daily Herald, he said he stay night he was ready to start immediately on a new comedy, in color. "I am bringing back the little man exactly as he was," he said. "Of course he will be a little older. The film will be a ballet slapstick complete with all the works. There will be comedy in every way." "I was wrong to kill him. There is room for the little man in the atomic age." Tom, Dick, Harry Losing Out to TV COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI)—Today's parents are apparently going in for naming their offspring after televisions heroes. Mrs. Eather Dellenbach, registrar of the Bureau of Vital Statistics here, reports a trend toward such names as Wyatt, Bret Bart and Rickle, as well as Brian Warren, Keith, Clark, Debbie Kimberly and Kelly. Robert W. BONEY CITRUS PLYMOUTH Dodge-Plymouth 328 W. Center St. KE 5-2113 312 N. Los Angeles St., PR 4-4188 Around Hollywood By Vernon Scott HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Phyllis Kirk is one of the prettiest girls on television, but it's her brains that keep her flying high on "The Thin Man" series. The seventeen brunette beauty is the only video detective's sidekick who doesn't fade into the background while the hero takes all the bows. "I knew that when I accepted the role," she said, cannily. "We were the first of the sophisticated detective dramas, and from the scripts it was simple to see that the part of Nora Charles was that of a leading lady who made more than token appearances. Since then some of the new shows just use girls as part of the scenery." Asta, the pooch who romps with Phyllis and Peter Lawford in the series, has more to do than most actresses on competing shows. Differs From Movies "Our program wa something of a disappointment when we went on the air because audiences expected it to be the same as 'The Thin Man' movies," Phyllis said. "Actually, we were taking an old idea and making something new of it." None of the scripts was based on the books or the pictures. But the critics all compared me with ORANGE THEATRE FREE PARKING Myrna Loy, who starred in the movies." Phyllis admitted she never has seen a "Thin Man" film, adding "I'm scared because I heard how great they were." "Myrna and William Powell played older people in the movie versions—fortyish. And they did some heavy drinking, too, I understand. We could never get away with that on television." Wants Heavier Roles Phyllis had been a dramatic star in movies before turning to her comedy role in the NBC-TV series. Now she's anxious to return to heavier roles. "I've been getting picture offers since the series began, but they've all been for comedies," she said. "I'm essentially a dramatic actress and that's what I want to do." Then why did Phyllis accept her video role? "It sounded like fun," she answered. "And it is. However, I had hoped, it might lead to more serious roles in pictures. If I want drama I'm forced to hit the straw-hat circuit back East or go to London for movies." "Our program wa something of a disappointment when we went on the air because audiences expected it to be the same as 'The Thin Man' movies," Phyllis said.
