Scout Explorer Program Told To County Leaders
By Hal Thomas
I can't remember when I was ever more vitally aware of the burning thirst for knowledge of so many of our boys of high school age than I was last Thursday night, at a dinner-meeting in the Anaheim Assistance League clubhouse when more than 50 captains of industry and business were assembled to hear a detailed report on the Explorer program of the Boy Scouts of America.
Adult leadership, youth movements and do-gooder groups to keep our youth population occupied certainly are not uncommon on the American scene; but it took only two hours to convince half a hundred leading industrialists of North Orange county that in the Boy Scout Explorer program, they, the business leaders of this area hold the golden key of opportunity—the opportunity to help mold the young men whom they will hire tomorrow.
I doubt that there was a man in the audience who came prepared to withstand the impact of the Explorer message. One could have heard a pin drop while three brilliant young Newport Harbor high school seniors delineated the activities of their "special interest" Explorer units.
Pointing out that theirs was the world's first Science Explorer Post, 17-year old "Chief Engineer" Gary Lineberry revealed field trips to atomic energy projects, submarine cruises, missile-firings and

Pointing out that theirs was the world's first Science Explorer Post, 17-year old "Chief Engineer" Gary Lineberry revealed field trips to atomic energy projects, submarine cruises, missile-firings and many other scientific experiments at government test sites—all of which would have been quite impossible without the combined efforts of the Explorer program and Hughes Aircraft Company, sponsors of the unit, according to Lineberry.
The Merchandising Post, sponsored by O. W. "Dick" Richard of Richard's Market, Lido Isle, was given a rundown by young Howard Gilstrap who described "on-the-job" experience in all fields of retail trade and advertising media.
Grant Hornbeak reported on the complex activities of his, the Banking and Finance Post and he described trips to the Los Angeles Branch Federal Reserve Bank, a first-hand study of the stock market and excursions into the field of foreign trade.
Newport Harbor's W. H. "Bill" Spurgeon III, member of the national committee on Exploring, literally "hurled a challenge" at the roomful of industry heads as he went on to prove his point that, "Businessmen need Explorers" and "high school boys want their information from experts."
"The Exploring program means going after both men and boys to bridge the gap. This means putting men and boys together; however, it's a one-way bridge—the men must go to the boys," said Spurgeon—closing his remarks with a quotation from Edmund Burke—"For evil to succeed it is only necessary for good men to do nothing."
Chairman Adolf Schoepe stated that this meeting was merely the initial step in the course of a vigorous follow-up toward fruition of a complete Explorer program for the North Orange county area.

Juvenile Hall Head Tells Boy, Girl Differences
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — David Bogen, head of the Los Angeles County Juvenile Hall for 16 years, says boys and girls usually are taken into custody for quite different reasons.
"Boys are arrested mainly for offenses against property," he said, "while girls commit offenses against themselves such as defying their parents, sex delinquency and running away."
