A-Sub Sets New Record With Lawmakers Aboard
GROTON, Conn. (UPI) — The atomic submarine Skipjack went faster and deeper than any other known submarine during a week-end "VIP" cruise, it was reported yesterday.
Members of the joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy joined Vice Adm. Hyman G. Rickover, "Father" of the atom subs, in an 18-hour cruise that began Saturday and ended Sunday.
Committee Chairman Sen. Clinton P. Anderson (D-N.M.) said: "While under way and submerged the joint committee held an official meeting during which Skipjack was going faster and deeper than any known submarine in history."
Anderson declined to give exact figures on the sub's performance due to security reasons, saying only it had been deeper than 400 feet and faster than 20 knots. Atom subs previously have gone as deep as 700 feet.
Also along on the cruise were committee members Sens. John O. Pastore (D-R.I.), Henry M. Jackson (D-Wash.), George E. Allen (R-Vt.), and Reps. Chet Holifield (D-Calf.). James E. Van Zandt (R-Pa.) and Jack Westland (R-Wash.).

HOLLYWOOD — Since I had a case of the sniffles, I took the opportunity of viewing the Academy Award fracas on the little screen. And if NBC aimed to sabotage the movie industry, they couldn't have done a better job with poor lighting and camera angles. The subjects were constantly off-center and the male stars all had five o'clock shadow.
Get out your weeping towels, gals. More soap opera is going the way of most radio drama. NBC is dropping six of its daytime serials, including "One Man's Family," "Real Life Story," "Woman In My House," "Affairs of Dr. Gentry," "Five Star Matinee" and "Pepper Young's Family." Soap operas have borne the brunt of much ridicule, but some of the biggest stars of the entertainment world cut their teeth on soap opera.
I've had many readers write that they have stopped using Lever Bros. products on account of Elea-nor Roosevelt's commercial. Next they'll have her mouthing such phrases as: "When you take your shower in the morning, don't you think of all the dirty people in the world, and wish you could share your soap with them."
Radio newsman Robert Taber has been commissioned to write a book on Fidel Castro. Robert claims his book will "not be a biography of Castro, but a serious study of the Cuban revolution, its political implication and its rationale." The Spanish rights have been sold to a Havana publisher—how could anyone miss on that?
Earl Holliman is filming a tele-pilot for a series titled "Hotel de Paris." . . . Steve McQueen play-makes a baby-killer in the feature flicker "Never So Few." . . . Fancy Hoagy Carmichael playing like a cowboy in an hour's spectacular called "Laramie!"
Both the Milton Berle and George Burns shows fall by the wayside this season, so the boys are putting their show business knowhow together and will produce for TV.
The asphalt jungle Efrem Zimbalist Jr. gumshoes to "77 Sunset Strip" is nothing compared to the jungle compound he keeps for his kids at his valley ranch, populated by a miniature Shetland pony, a horse, three dogs, two cats, seven parakeets a flock of ban-tam chicks and a white rat.
Jimmie Rodgers tells me that he bought a guitar from a fellow soldier and learned to play and sing to help fill the lonely off-duty hours when he was doing a hitch in the U.S. Air Force.
Come May, CBS will launch "Women!" an hour-long daytime series. The programs will revolve around such topics as: "Do they marry too young?" "Who tells me how to dress?" "Is the American woman losing her femininity?" and "You can't raise children by a book."

Around Hollywood
By Vernon Scott
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Tennessee Ernie Ford tries something new next week when he switches from his easy-going song fest to a condensed version of an operetta.
The old pea-picker, who clomped out of the Tennessee mountains, is going highbrow with "The Mikado"—but with lowbrow overtones.
"We'll sing the Gilbert and Sullivan songs like they wrote 'em."
Ernie drawled. "But between numbers you might say I'll keep the story going as best I can with a little humor, Tennessee favored."
Not content with playing a single role, old Ern will essay the parts of Ko-Ko and the Mikado.
Consistently High Rating
"We never tackled anything like this on the show before," he said. "But back in Bristol, Tenn., when I was 18 years old I played Ko-Ko in a special presentation by the Virginia Intermont School for Girls. It was very big. Ended up by doing it twice, the folks liked
Liz Taylor Surgery To Interrupt Vacation
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—Elizabeth Taylor, vacationing with husband-to-be Eddie Fisher in Las Vegas, will return here for minor throat surgery Wednesday, a spokesman
It so well.
"This here program is a large departure for me. Might say it's a trial balloon. Ifn't it's a success there might be others — like 'The Red Mill' and 'Carmen.'
"Course I know we're foolin' with success and could hurt ourselves."
By success Ernie referred to his ratings — consistently higher than his competition, "Playhouse 90." and his spot among the top 10 shows in the various polls.
"If CBS changes our opposition to 'Bunkhouse 90' we'll all be dead," he grinned. "I'm scared to death of them westerns.
Big Western Fan
"I'm a big western fan myself. Biggest fan they got. I watch 'em all every week, so I know all the characters and what they're up to every time I turn the TV set on."
Ernie bemoaned the expense of the show, noting that each wig will cost him $75 and the rented costumes will knock his budget into oblivion.
"All the stuff will be authentic," he said. "And except for me the cast will be made up to look like Japanese, with slanted eyes and beards. I can't have my eyes slanted because I have to give the commercials before and after the show. That'd look pretty funny."
Ernie will watch his mail and ratings on "The Mikado" program — which beams Thursday night — and if all goes well he plans to alternate his usual show with occasional dramas, and perhaps a western.
However, the division commander continued to observe all units in the training area.
One official said he seemed visibly impressed.
The Orange County guard units have secured two locations and a third is pending state approval for held training in the county. The large area "located near the coast on the southern part of the county," is used by all units.
Its exact location has not been made public.
Arizona Youth Faces Year in County Jail
By Orange County News Service
An Arizona youth, who in the company of three other teenagers, reportedly pulled a series of burglaries in Anaheim, Fullerton, Garden Grove, and Los Angeles, has been sentenced to the county jail for a year.
William Patrick Chalmers, 19, is also being sought by Arizona authorities and he may be picked up here after his jail sentence, it was disclosed.
The young defendant, in the company of a friend from Arizona, and two Anaheim youths, was first picked up by Anaheim police when neighbors on Briavale St., complained the youths were racing and playing an unusual game of "chicken." One of the boys would stand in the street while the others in a car would try and run him down.
Following questioning, the teenagers told police of service station burglaries in Anaheim and Upland, California.

NEW YORK (UPI)—Archibald MacLeish's "J. B." and "Redhead" Sunday night won the American Theater Wing's Tony medallions as the "outstanding" dramatic and musical productions of the 1958-59 Broadway theater season.
Two of the season's most praised plays, "A Raisin in The Sun" and "Sweet Bird of Youth," were not in competition with "J. B." because they opened after the March 1 closing date for nominations.
Tonys—formally the Antoinette Perry Awards—are given for "outstanding" or "distinguished" contributions to a season, not on a "first" or "best" basis.

The actress has been bothered with a chronic throat infection which caused high temperatures and forced her to speak almost in a whisper.
Fisher, appearing at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, made arrangements for Miss Taylor to enter Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. While the aliment was not regarded as serious, Fisher said she would be hospitalized overnight.
