I'll Handel This
By LEONARD R. HANDEL
(Bulletin Sports Editor)
Tomorrow afternoon Coach Roy Merk's Western Pioneers will open their second round of Freeway League competition when they face Rancho Alamitos' Vaqueros.
Merk's charges, playing without a single senior, find themselves in the highly enviable position of being tied for Circuit leadership with the La Habra Highlanders.
Those close to the Pioneer scene are well aware that their favorite ball club earned this right by knocking off three of their Circuit foes while losing to only one.
This achievement was one which came as a major type surprise to Orange County baseball fans.
As is well known, the Westerners are competing in only their first year on a varsity level, which means that they are giving away a great deal of experience and maturity on each occasion.
Yet, regardless of this, they were able to down such good crews as Rancho Alamitos, La Habra and Buena Park.
It's interesting to note that in all these games the locals were anything but a powerhouse at the plate.
They defeated Rancho 1-0; dropped La Habra by a 2-1 count and then dropped Buena Park by a 1-0 margin.
This means that the Merk-led Pioneers have been on the receiving end of some tremendous pitching performances.
One lad who is chiefly responsible for this is sophmore ace Dennis Painter, who has not been allowing his lack of varsity-type experience to bother him.
Painter is the young man who blanked Rancho and is also the lad who looked real good against Buena Park when he came in to relieve in the last inning and retired two men on strikeouts.
In addition to Painter, John Henyan has also been turning in some good performances, which has helped Merk to a great degree.
However, while much of the credit for the Pioneer victory must go to the pitching staff, another young man must be given his share of the plaudits.
He would be catcher Ben Fischer, and a better receiver would be hard to find in Freeway circles.
Fischer has shown an amazing ability for handling his pitchers with a good deal of baseball "savvy."
He doesn't let opposing rallies — or threats of same — worry him and for this reason can help a pitcher twirl himself out of the difficulties.
In addition to being a fine catcher, Fischer has also shown his prowess at the plate with a number of solidly rapped base knocks just when they count the most.
Taking a quick look at the victory march of Coach Merks' wrecking crew, one can readily see that the team is winning for another reason, too.
This is because the ball club has been working as a team, which is all anyone can ask of any given ball club.

Fans know well that a ball club can have a number of "stars," but this means little or nothing if they do not work as a unit.
The Pioneers have been clicking because each player is carrying out his assignment and in so doing has been trying to improve not only for himself but for the betterment of his teammates.
Naturally, it is rather hard at this time to say that the Poineers are going to win the Freeway crown.
They have a rather long road ahead of them.
Should the Westerners continue to work as they have in the past, then they will be extremely tough to knock off.
But it is still going to take a major effort for them to go "all the way."
The remaining teams are still hot on their trail.
WRESTLING NOTES
The wrestling card at Anaheim High School Friday night was met with some good comment by those in attendance.
A number of fans remarked that the Church of Latter Day Saints did a fine thing for the city when they brought professional grappling into the area.
It was stated that the turnout proved that Orange County could support more of these shows.
Interesting was the fact that the preliminaries drew as much excitement from the audience as did the main events.
Pat Cronin, who promoted the affair for the church's Building Fund, is to be congratulated for bringing topflight grunt'n groaners into this community.
It just might be that more will follow.
LUSKEY PERFORMS
Bob Luskey, the Bulletin's Mater Dei correspondent, makes like an actor tonight when he assumes a role in his class' senior play, "Two's a Crowd."
Just goes to prove that us sports writing fellers are very talented in all fields.
Bring on the greasepaint.
DODGERS TOMORROW
Those Los Angeles Dodgers open up at Memorial Coliseum tomorrow night when they face the Saint Louis Cardinals.
If you're going — be there early.
A record turnout is expected.

Atoll, with "Heady Eddie" aboard, scampered to an impressive victory over Intentionally in the Gotham Stakes at Jamaica last Saturday and now shapes up as the horse to beat in the Wood. However, if First Landing wins "big" today, Arcaro may have trouble picking between the two Derby hopefuls.
In 1942, Arcaro faced a similar dilemma leading up to the Derby when he had to pick between Shut Out and Devil Diver. He guessed wrong, finishing fifth aboard Devil Diver while Shut Out, ridden by Wayne Wright, won the classic.
First Landing will carry top weight of 124 pounds against six rivals in his 1959 New York debut today. The son of Turn-To was named the nation's outstanding juvenile last year when he won 10 of 11 starts but hasn't been too impressive thus far this season.

Pennant Fever Hits San Francisco Camp
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — Cynics might say that it is a little early but it looks as though San Francisco is suffering from a severe cast of pennant fever.
The undefeated San Franciscans returned home last night and were met by a host of dignitaries and an estimated 5,000 fans.
Today, the tempo increased with the team slated to get a hero’s welcome in a gala parade through downtown San Francisco.
Twelve thousand balloons, 1,000 pounds of confetti and plenty of ticker-tape were to be showered on the team, while pom-pom girls, college bands and the leather-lunged Foghorn Murphy saluted the Giants.
The parade was to end on the steps of City Hall with Mayor George Christopher presenting each Giant with a set of cuff-links.
The first home game is Tuesday with a full house near certainty at Seals Stadium as the Giants host the Chicago Cubs. Jack Sanford is to make his debut on the hill for the locals.
Sunday, the Giants completed their impressive three-game sweep at St. Louis with a 6-3 triumph.
The San Francisans omithit the Redbirds 13-6, but the issue was in doubt until the top of the ninth, when Jim Davenport singled, and with two men out, Orlando Cepeda tripled and Felipe Alou homered. Both extra base blows were into the teeth of a stiff wind from left field.
Young Mike McCormick started for the bay team and pitched well, but was almost across in the first with Alou, Andre Rodgers and Cepeda committing bobbles.
In the third, the Giants got one back when Bob Schmidt doubled my Hornsby vs. Alfredo Urbina.

Banks scored Tony Taylor and Lee Wallis and then scored himself on a single by Walt Morryn.

Western Pioneers to Battle Rancho Alamitos Tomorrow
a record of three wins Freeway League starts, Roy Merk's Western Ploy meet Rancho Alamitos school tomorrow afternoon Raq's diamond. Time is slated for 3 p.m. in defeated Rancho in last meeting when the local game through with a 1-0 triumph.
Pioneers and Vaqs were in a scoreless deadlock to the bottom of the seven Dave Sturrock, a leader Western horsehide attack, through with the victory tally.
That contest for the Westerners was Dennis who authored a white-washing job and it is believed that the Rancho club will face him once more tomorrow.
While the Pioneers do hold a victory over the normally rugged Vaqueros it is expected that they will be facing a much tougher foe in the coming contest.
Nips Orange
The Rancho nine proceeded to knock off highly-touched Orange later, in first round competition, and since that time have recorded a number of good contests.
During the last week Merk's lads have been working to improve their attack at the plate, a rather weak point in the local hitting attack.
Merk has said on numerous occasions that he is worried about this as they cannot always depend on good pitching and a maximum amount of fielding strength.
In their last outing the Pioneers were defeated by Valencia's Tigers with this loss also seeing the Westerners tallying a mere four safe blows.
Merk, looking toward the Rancho contest said, "We are going to have to play heads up ball to defeat the Rancho Alamitos club as they are one of the better teams in Freeway League play."
Pitching Chores
Expected to handle the pitching chores for that ball club is Ed Riley, a senior moundsmen, who suffered the loss in the opening game although he turned in a fine performance.
Riley is rated as one of the best flingers in the Circuit and it is quite possible that he will be in perfect condition for the contest tomorrow.
Western is currently tied with La Habra for League leadership, with both teams owning fine marks.
The Pioneers defeated La Habra in their first meeting.
Expected to see a great deal of action for the locals tomorrow are such men as Keith Davis, Ben Fischer, Marty Serilin, Butch Barthel, Flavio German and Bud Irvin.
A good turnout is expected.

By OSCAR FRALEY
NEW YORK (UPI)—Ever since the days of Mary, Queen of Scots, golfers have been trying to get a ball which will fly farther than the pellet used by the fellow on the other side of the five-shilling Nassau.
Everybody is always angling for an "edge" and, in lieu of talent, the best method seems to be in having a ball which will go farther than the other guy's. Which makes of particular interest the current claims that certain golf balls will travel 10 to 15 yards farther than other makes.
The manufacturers are in quite an undercover hassle over these claims and the U.S. Golf Association is inclined to believe, simply because of its standard of specifications, that most of the assertions are merely delusions of fair-way grandeur.
All Are Tested
The USGA limits golf balls in smallness, weight and velocity. The minimum diameter is set at 1.680 inches the weight limit at 1.620 ounces and the impact velocity at 250 feet per second. In the latter category the ruling body permits a two per cent tolerance, which makes a ball with a 255 foot per second velocity acceptable. All balls are tested on a special machine to ascertain that they fit USGA specifications.
This seems to indicate that the only ways in which one ball could vary would be in toughness and in the distressing matter of not being up to par so that it will not play as far as the rules permit.
However, this is a struggle which has been waged unceasingly since the Scots came up with a feather ball in the 19th century. That ball simply was a mass of feathers stitched into a leather casing and the best of golfers found it difficult to surpass 150 yards with a drive.
Nicking Helps
The solid gutta percha ball, with a smooth surface, was conceived in 1890 and gave the game with both teams owning fine marks.
The Pioneers defeated La Habra in their first meeting.
Expected to see a great deal of action for the locals tomorrow are such men as Keith Davis, Ben Fischer, Marty Serlin, Butch Barthel, Flavio German and Bud Irvin.

Honor Campy
In L.A. Tonight
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Roy Campanella will be honored tonight along with his former Los Angeles Dodger teammates by the baseball writers of Los Angeles.
Campanella, paralyzed 15 months ago in a near-fatal auto accident, arrived here Saturday for tonight's shindig and the opening of the Dodger home games Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
"I'm really and definitely considering moving here," said the 37-year-old former catcher who now lives in Glen Cove. N.Y.
"The weather's nice. Besides, I've been in baseball so long it's part of me, and I want to stay a part of it."
"My wife likes it too," he said, "but first I'm going to bring the kids out here to see how they like it. The three youngest — Roy, Tony and Princess — are coming out for the first game."
Campanella will hand over the baseball Tuesday night to get the Dodger-Cardinal game at the Coliseum underway.
156 points. Camp Pendleton was second with 21 points, San Diego Track and Field Club next with 6 and Pepperdine College last with 2.
University of California at Santa Barbara beat San Diego State, 74-57, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association dual meet at Santa Barbara.
Claremont-Mudd College won the Kellogg-Voorhis track meet at Pomona by racking up 48 points.
However, this is a struggle which has been waged unceasingly since the Scots came up with a feather ball in the 19th century. That ball simply was a mass of feathers stitched into a leather casing and the best of golfers found it difficult to surpass 150 yards with a drive.
Nicking Helps
The solid gutta percha ball, with a smooth surface, was conceived in 1890 and gave the game a shot in the arm. The only difficulty was that it was battered rapidly and companies sold a home press for remoulding balls as well as ball-painting machines.
Then, like the fellow who discovered the wonders of roast pig when his house burned down, golfers learned that the gutta percha ball played better when nicked.
The wound rubber ball was developed in the early 1900's. The sharples soon discovered nicking the smooth ball also paid handsome yardage dividends. When the smooth ball pushed through the air it caused eddies to build up in front of the ball and check its forward motion.
Claims Doubtful
Thus the manufacturers in 1908 came up with the dimpled surface in use today. The dimples, spinning in flight, reduced the negative pressure by breaking up the vacuum areas building up in front of the ball.
Without USGA specifications to hold things in check, the manufacturers conceivably could come up with a ball that a midget could wallop to the moon with a mid-mashle. Thus, while the distance squeeze remains perpetual in the interest of sales records, the advertising assertions can be taken with a whole shaker full of salt.
If they really want to brag about something, let 'em build a ball guaranteed to fly in a straight line. This one is a double-dyed cinch to outsell anything in the history of merchandising.
