Dear Abby...
Better Know What You’re Fighting!
by Abigail Van Buren
DEAR ABBY: My husband has been asking me for weeks if he can bring a divorced woman home for lunch who works where he works. She has been having problems with her “ex.” He wants me to hear her story and give her my opinion. I told my husband a woman of her age, which is 30, should not have to ask me (I am 32) for advice. I also told my husband I don’t think it looks right for this divorced woman to be telling her troubles to him either. I am getting very upset over this whole thing as my husband has pestered me for months about meeting this woman. Am I right in telling him he shouldn’t be so concerned with her troubles?
UPSET
DEAR UPSET: You are correct but you’d be wise to let him bring her home for lunch. Listen to her story, give her your opinion and throw in a little extra “advice” about single women “avoiding the appearance of evil” by confining their friendships to single men.
DEAR ABBY: I am very much interested in joining the WAVES and so are two of my girlfriends, but we would like to know something first. Is it possible to join the WAVES if you aren’t a virgin? Please tell me where to find out as it will save us a lot of embarrassment.
WANTING TO JOIN
DEAR WANTING: Contact your local recruiting office. They will give you all the official information.
DEAR ABBY: My mother said I could go to a show with this guy named Jerry. We double-dated with Laurie and Mike. We left the house at 7:30 and when we got in the car it turned out that Laurie had seen the show we were going to see, so we all went to Mike’s house. We just popped corn and goofed around and played records and watched TV. We got interested in a movie on TV and forgot the time, so instead of being home at 12 sharp like I said, we got home at 12:45. My mother was having fits. I didn’t lie to her, Abby. I told her we weren’t at the show and she almost hit the ceiling. Now I can’t go out for a month. Is this fair?
CINDY
DEAR CINDY: Parents are not unreasonable when they insist on knowing where their children are. When you leave the house, go where you planned to go. Should the plans change, phone your parents to get their approval.
DEAR ABBY: I am a 19-year-old boy and have a problem that is very confidential, so if you put this in the paper please don’t use...

DEAR ABBY: I am a 19-year-old boy and have a problem that is very confidential, so if you put this in the paper please don’t use my name. Every time I kiss a girl nothing happens. My friends are always talking about how good certain girls can kiss. I take them out and when I kiss them, like I said, nothing happens. I know they are trying, too. I am very worried about it. Am I normal?
DEAR JUST: It’s a matter of elementary physics. Son. When the RIGHT irresistible force (she) meets the immovable object (you) something’s got to give. Patience!

NEW VISTA FOR RESEARCH — Beckman Instruments, Inc. unveiled a new electronic instrument in New York City yesterday that is designed to help establish new standards of chemical purity for science, medicine and industry. Joseph W. Lewis (left), manager of the Beckman Scientific and Process Instruments Division, said the Megachrom Preparative Gas Chromatograph, the first commercially-practicable instrument of its kind, can take apart chemical mixtures as elusive as flavors and aromas and capture the ultrapure components in workable quantities for research. He is shown with H. J. Noebels, manager of application engineering, examining a product of a new unit. Beckman plans to publicly exhibit the chromatograph next week before the Association of Federated Biologists of America meeting in Atlantic City.

Anaheim Forecast
Unprecedented growth for the insurance industry in the California market has been forecast by Dr. Robert R. Dockson of Anaheim, dean-elect of the school of commerce at the University of Southern California, in a new economic study published today by Union Bank.
Entitled "Growth Pattern: The Insurance Industry in the California Market," the study is the second in a series by Dr. Dockson who is consulting economist at Union Bank. Dr. Dockson's first study on the dynamic Los Angeles metropolitan area was published last year and gained nationwide attention for its projections which pointed to a population of 10,300,000 for the two-county area by 1957 and forecast that Los Angeles will destined to become the world number one metropolis.
The new insurance study forecasts a doubling of the insurance market in California by 1975, with total premiums written for types of insurance expected to reach from $5.5 billion to $8.5 billion, compared with $2.5 billion in 1957. Total premiums have advanced 515% in California since 1940 compared with 345% for the nation as a whole.
Dr. Dockson stated that all types of insurance participated in tremendous growth, but at varying rates, with disability insurance up more than 2400% and automobile insurance up more than 700%. Life insurance represented the smallest increase but still advanced about 300%. The Union Bank study estimates that 47% to 51% of the state's insurance business is located in Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Southern California Water Leaders Reiterate Stand on Key Issues
Southern California water leaders yesterday reiterated their long stand for adherence to basic rules in the State's water program in a telegram to Governor Brown.
Signed by representatives of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Southern California Water Coordinating Conference, Board of Water and Power Commissioners, Los Angeles, Metropolitan Water District and water districts of Orlando.
Bord Increases April Production of Cars
Based on advance dealer orders, Bord Division has increased its April car production schedules 20 percent over plan.
About 140,000 cars are scheduled to be assembled during April. More than one double the number produced in April last year and the highest number scheduled for any April since 1955, the industry's banner year.
Truck production is being upped 4 per cent over plan. The 30,000 scheduled truck assemblies represent a 65 per cent increase over truck assemblies last April.
During April Ford will produce a millionth 1959 vehicle and will begin two-shift operations at its new 1.8 million square foot plant at Lorain, Ohio.
More than three-quarters of a million new Ford passenger cars have been built and sold to dealers since the car was introduced 5½ months ago (October 17, 1958). This is equal to about 80 per cent of all the Fords built during the entire 1958 model year. Production during the first quarter of 1959 totaled 399,000 cars, up 38 per cent over the first quarter of 1958.
Despite heavy overtime schedules for Ford assembly plants for the last six months, Ford dealer stocks are below average, totaling only slightly more than a month's sales.
Newport Amusement
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — A request by the developers of Newport Dunes for a celestial observation facility, a project which will change Ventura and Riverside Counties, the message urged accomplishments of specific needs before the water program is launched in 1960.
"To have a water development program of substance," the telegram read, "there must follow: 1) Approval by the Legislature of submitting the bond issue to a vote by the people; 2) Voters' approval; 3) Bond issue must be specific and adequate to complete construction; 4) Assurance that water user entities will contract for repayment of all reimbursable costs; 5) A constitutional amendment to protect the integrity of contracts; 6) Enactment by the Legislature making transfer of the San Luis site dependent upon agreement between the state and federal governments."
The message said progress to date in solution of water problems has been "heartening and represents progress. They do not as yet constitute accomplishment."
"If this year's Legislative session takes steps to accomplish the above listed needs, the California water program will be launched in a harmonious atmosphere in the fall of 1960. However, there should be no doubt—as the necessity of favovable action on every one of these components," the message concluded.
Signing the telegram were the following: J. E. Fishburn, Jr., president, Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce; James Krieger, vice-chairman, So. Calif.; Water Coordinating Conference; J. E. Moller, Jr., president, Board of Water and Power Commissioners; Joseph Jensen, chairman of the board, Metropolitan Water District; Howard Crooke, general manager, Orange County Water District; William P. Price, Jr., general manager, United Water Conservation District, Ventura County; and the Board of Directors, Western Municipal Water District of Riverside County.
Success Secret Talks Planned In Anaheim
Dr. Jim Jones, successful business leader, writer, lecturer, and author of the book "If You Can Count To Four," is scheduled to give two free lectures Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14 and 15, at 8 p.m. at the Assistance League Club House.

Jones, born in the hills of Tennessee into a family of 14 children, has worked at various occupations throughout his 41 years, including such diversified activities as farming, digging ditches, clerking in hotels and grocery stores, as well as selling insurance.
He has shown an interest from his early childhood in discovering if there were any specific "laws" governing the road to success. He claims to have discovered such laws and to have put them to work for himself and is now at work helping other people discover and appropriate these methods of personal improvement.
Dr. Jones has addressed audiences throughout the nation.

Enaheim Educator Forecasts Growth
Precedented growth for the face industry in the California market has been forecast by Robert R. Dockson of Anaheim-elect of the school of face at the University of San Francisco, in a new eco-study published today by Bank.
Added "Growth Pattern: The Face Industry in the California Market," the study is the second series by Dr. Dockson, as consulting economist to Bank. Dr. Dockson's first on the dynamic Los Angeles politan area was publishedear and gained nationwideion for its projections which led to a population of 10,300,000the two-county area by 1975forecast that Los Angeles wasled to become the world's largest metropolis.

Dockson stated that all typesinsurance participated in thisendous growth, but at vary-ates, with disability insurancemore than 2400% and auto-mo-insurance up more than 700%.Insurance represented thebest increase but still added about 300%.
Union Bank study estimates47% to 51% of the state'since business is located in theAngeles metropolitan area,
and as this area continues to expand at a rate faster than the rest of the state, this percentage can be expected to become still higher.
Los Angeles has replaced San Francisco as the dominant insurancenter in the state on the basis of employment, according toDr. Dockson. There were approximately 80,000 workers directly employed by the industry in California during 1957, and in addition, about 130,000 original and renewallicenses were issued to brokers, agents and solicitors.
Dr. Dockson reported that there were 639 authorized insurers in California in 1957, but no single institution dominates the market andrecords show that some of thesmaller insurance carriers havedone exceedingly well. Of this total,172 were Me insurers, 453 werefire, marine, casualty and miscellaneous, and 14 were title companies. Ninety-four of the firmswere domiciled in the state and a majority of these had their head offices in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
According to the Union Bank study, the average California citizenowns more life insurance than theaverage citizen in the rest of thecountry. Total life premiums willrange from $1.8 billion to $2.1 billion by 1975, compared with $874million in 1957.
The new study is being distributedto insurance industry, business, finance and investment leaders throughout the nation, and reportsin detail on all major classes ofinsurance, as well as on the industryas a whole.
