ONLY AN ILLUSION — A La Cross surface-to-surface missile seems to be scooting past the surface of the moon after a firing from Alamogordo, N.M., missile test range. It's only illusion, however. Moon and missile are separated by some 240 miles. Unusual effect was created by the 96-inch lens of the I camera used to photograph the flight. Sheinwold on Bridge By ALFRED SHEINWOLD U.S. Masters Team Champion San Francisco Unhappy Over AF Sonic 'Blasts' SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — San Francisco officials opened a verbal attack today on the Air Force for a series of sonic bombardments which rocked the area on three consecutive days. The Air Force admitted Wednesday night that some of its late model jets were responsible for the thundering booms, which shattered windows, scattered dishes, and cracked plaster walls. Telephone calls flooded police stations throughout the Bay Area. One woman said Wednesday's boom knocked her child out of his high chair. Mayor George Christopher said he would appeal to the Defense Department. "I'm not going to tell them how to run the Defense Department," he said. "I'll just ask if they can do their experiments out over the ocean, where they won't cause commotion in the city." In Washington, Rep. John F. Shelley (D-Calif.) said he would demand "full and complete information on the incidents." A serious medical viewpoint was given by Dr. John G. Walsh. Sacramento, president-elect of the American Academy of General Practices — now holding its convention here. "Sonic booms are a potential new factor in triggering the onset of such illnesses as coronary heart attacks," he said. "It could turn a precoronary case into an actual case." Charles Peloquin, of nearby Daly City, said he thought his house was going to fall down when the area was rocked Wednesday morning. "Somebody up there is just doing it for the hell of it," he said. "I sit through the bombings in London and never heard anythinguder..." And Peloquin gave the Air Force a rather sobering warning: "My wife says they're going to organize some kind of a women's association and make 'em stop terrifying the kids." It is enough to say that North and South were part of the American team who played against Italy a couple of months ago for the world championship. North correctly judged that his hand wasn't worth a bid when West overcalled with one spade. It still wasn't worth a bid when East's raise to two spades was passed around to North. Piper, a red-haired pip, could use the money, but she's refused another $500,000 in avoiding the anguish of seeing herself in second-rate movies. Question — Why? Answer — I don't want to be ashamed of myself or my work. Q. — Lots of stars make mediocre films, and stacks of money, is that bad? A. — Yes, for me. I starred in pictures I knew were lousy when I first read the scripts. Then I'd have a traumatic experience watching the completed film. It got so I couldn't sleep at night. Must Watch Budget? A. — Sure I miss the big salary, and I have to work to manage my budget. But I had seven years of being a glamour girl and I don't miss it. I had my fun buying more clothes than I needed and of pretending I was a movie star. I haven't bought any new clothes in six years. Q. — How much work have you found since quitting Universal International studios? A. — I've appeared in live TV shows and one movie. I'm really excited about my next TV show. It's the first act of George Bernard Shaw's "Caesar and Cleopatra" with Maurice Evans for GE Theater CBS-TV. freedom seemed more important at the time — and it still does. Q. — Did you expect to find better roles in top-flight movies? A. — I was eager to do television guest shots, a TV series and pictures for other companies. But two days after I was free I suddenly realized I didn't want to do any of those things, even though my agents had lined up a lot of work for me. Q. — What do you do with your free time now? A. — Well, I live alone in a nice big house at Pacific Palisades, walking along the beach.
