YOUR MONEY'S WORTH Last Minute Advice Given Those Still Working on Income Taxes By SYLVIA PORTER For the millions of you now filling out and filing your 1958 Federal income tax returns, here's some practical, last-minute advice: Many of the rules to which taxpayers and their accountants have become accustomed in recent years were importantly changed by Congress and the Treasury, last year. Knowledge of these rules well might bring you big tax savings and ignorance of them could trap you in new dangers. Below, therefore, is a checklist I've prepared with the aid of the Research Institute of America of key changes which could directly involve you. If your 1958 income was between $5,000 and $10,000 and was earned largely from a salary, you may for the first time use the simple card return Form 1040A. It's an easy form to fill out, but even if you're entitled to use it, you still may save tax dollars by filling out the longer form IF: you intend to claim the tax break allowed to a head of a household or surviving widow or widower; or you could benefit from the special tax benefits applying to retirement income, foreign taxes, partially exempt interest or dividends (above $50); or you've received exempt sick pay or you're entitled to deductions for transportation, away-from-home travel, reimbursed expenses or other job expenses. Medical Expenses If you or your wife are over 65 and disabled your maximum medical expense deduction has now been raised to $15,000. If you're a married couple, over 65 and disabled and filing a joint return, the maximum is $30,000, but this can't undertaken to meet specific employer or statutory requirements for retaining your present job or salary. If you had travel and entertainment expenses in 1958, they are to be deducted and reported according to an entirely new set of rules. If your employer reimbursed you and you accounted to him for the expenses and your expenses and reimbursement are equal, you simply check both "yes" boxes opposed site the two questions below line 20 on page one of Form 1040. You need do nothing more; you don't have to report the reimbursement or deduct the expenses. If your expenses were not reimbursed, or if you did not account to your employer for your reimbursed expenses or if you plan to deduct unreimbursed expenses in addition to reimbursed expenses for which you did account, you have to report on your return details of any reimbursement and any expenses you claim. Under the circumstances, if you had expenses in excess of reimbursements for which you account, you might find it wise to skip claiming a deduction for them in order to avoid having to detail all your expenses. Purchased Property If you are in business and pursued property last year, you are entitled to an extra flat 20 per cent first-year depreciation on the first $10,000 of the property ($20,000 if you are filing a joint return). This is in addition to any other depreciation to which you may be entitled to qualify: The property must be new or used tangible personal property (not buildings); the property must have at least a six-year useful life; the deduction must be taken in the first taxable year for which a depreciation... that's why she makes all our desserts with M.C.P. You’re Stuck, Son! by Abigail Van Buren DEAR ABBY: In a weak moment I let my mother talk me into asking a big fat cow with no personality to the Spring formal at school. Her mother is always crying to my mother how this girl has no dates. Well, when I asked her I didn’t have any other girl in mind, but now a lot of things have happened and there is a real doll I would like to ask but I am stuck with this cow. Is there any way I can get out of taking her so I can take the girl like? Would it be wrong to ask a friend of mine to take her as a favor? DEAR STUCK: You can’t switch horses (or cows) in mid-stream without causing a lot of embarrassment for you; the doll and the cow-girl, and both the mothers. Take the girl you asked. It only hurts for a little while. DEAR ABBY: My husband was sent to prison for four years and he doesn’t believe I’ll wait for him that long. We have two children and I don’t intend to break my marriage vows. I love him very much and I AM going to wait for him and remain faithful. How can I make him believe me and not lose faith in me? Please help me. I'm not very good with words. DEAR “A”: You are magnificent with words because they express exactly what is in your heart. Your husband will never grow tired of hearing you say, "I love you, Darling, and I WILL, wait for you." Say it again and again and again in every letter as often as you can write him. He'll believe you. DEAR ABBY: I was called out of town by the death of a relative and was gone a week. When I returned I found some glass beads on the kitchen floor which surely had been from a broken string. They were clear glass and I have nothing like them in the house. When I asked my husband about it, he said they were dried mothballs. Anyway they were round glass with a hole through the middle. Do mothballs come that way? And if they do, don't they always smell like mothballs? Am I losing my mind or is he lying to me? DEAR WIFE: A man who can convince his wife that a glass bead is a dried mothball is a pretty good salesman. You are losing your mind only if you believe him. DEAR ABBY: Maybe I am foolish but here’s my problem. I'm in my thirties and I'm married and have four children, but there are certain things I cannot do. For instance when I am buying a dress, I don't like the saleslady in the dress room with me. I am sometimes too shy to ask her to wait outside, so I won't try the dress on unless... In addition to any other situation to which you may be required to qualify: The property is new or used tangible per property (not buildings); the must have at least a six-safe life; the deduction taken in the first taxable or which a depreciation deal is allowed for the property. Aetna Life Insurance Named in Court Suit SANTA ANA (OCNS) — The Aetna Life Insurance Company is the defendant in a $0,000 suit on file in Superior Court here. Clara M. Fausey, administratrix of the estate of the late Russell Fausey, claims the money was part of the life insurance policy her husband had with the firm. The deceased reportedly had a $6,000 life insurance policy with provisions for a double idemnity if death occurred as an accident. Fausey reportedly died from injuries received in an accident at work. Only half the money was paid the widow, it is claimed. He had obtained coverage under the policy through his employer, the Douglas Aircraft Co. Milk For Children Causes Complications SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)—The "almost fanatic" use of milk by Americans "has added more complications than benefits to child nutrition," according to an Indiana physician. Dr. Harold D. Lynch, Evansville, told the convention of the American Academy of General Practice Monday that both parents and doctors sometimes fail to worry about over-all nutrition as long as children drink plenty of milk. "When used with restraint, or to make cheese, milk is valuable food for man and child." Lynch said. "But the zeal to provide calcium at all costs often completely distorts the nutritional program." He said the child that is getting lots of milk still may suffer from insufficient protein. The American mother's big problem is to get enough fish, fowl, eggs and other high-protein foods into her children. "Milk supplies an abundance of minerals—and a false sense of security," Lynch said. Dr. Leroy E. Burney, surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service, agreed in a speech that the job of assessing the danger of nuclear bomb fallout should be shifted from the Atomic Energy Commission to his own agency. However, he refused to agree with critics of the AEC that it has underplayed the danger of fallout in terms of leukemia, cancer, and congenital malformations.
