NEW YORK (UPI)—The Bell Telephone Hour, which has tried to be all things to all music-lovers, changed its attack in the final show of the current series on NBC-TV Thursday night.
The program offered well-known popular songs by Gisele Mackenzie, Rosemary Clooney and Jose Ferrer, the latest recruit in the crooner ranks; ballet by Maria Tallchief and Andre Eglevsky; and operatic duet from Smetana's "The Bartered Bride," by Giorgio Tozzi, basso, and Nicolai Gedda, tenor; and Jose Iturbi playing fragments from Hambeau, Chopin and Liszt.
Where has the series changed? No jazz segment this time. I assume this means the sponsor is feeling frisky, if not reckless. Perhaps next season, some ventureome musical programs will come our way.
Of Thursday night's five segments, I felt the ballet sequence was most successful. It was handsome, clean and graceful.
The moral confusions brought on by war, where duty and honor so often clash, were trotted out Thursday night in a slow-moving, painstakingly authentic Playhouse 90 drama, "The Day Before Atlanta."

John Gay's script touched on the big questions but hardly resolved them. His central character, a young Union soldier played by Timmy Everett, killed his sergeant in order to save a young southern girl's virtue. Soon after, Everett is captured by the southners. Since he tried to do the right thing but was pained by the ruthlessness of the sergeant, who killed a man and a boy, the question is: shall Everett hang? The decision is side-stepped as Everett tries to escape and is shot down.

Japanese Bride in
By ARNOLD DIBBLE
United Press International
TOKYO (UPI) — Crown Prince Akihito married his commoner sweetheart, Michiko Shoda, today in a 15-minute ceremony of Oriental splendor that shattered 2,619 years of tradition and brought joy to all Japan.
The 26-year-old prince defied palace traditionalists by marrying for love and bringing to the threshold of the throne of Japan the daughter of a milling executive he wooed and won on a tennis court.
Akihito and Michiko became man and wife when their Shinto wedding ceremony ended with a sip of sake from a silver bowl in the innter shrine of the Imperial Palace, the "other world" for most Japanese.
Akihito wore the ceremonial saffron-orange robe known as onino-o. His bride wore an antique robe made of 12 layers which burdened her with 44 pounds of red, yellow, lavender, blue green and white silk and brocade. The wedding gown was used by the Empress Nagako when she was married 35 years ago to Emperor Hirohito.
Sun Breaks Out
Atop Michiko's hair, woven with a wig into a ceremonial hair-do that took hours to perfect was a tiara of 1,000 diamonds set in platinum, a tiara used by the Empress Teimel, Akihito's grandmother, for her wedding in 1900, but remodeled for today.
Michiko wore the same tiara in the triumphal procession afterwards through the streets past cheering millions as Akihito bore her in a maroon and gold carriage to his Togu Palace. It was a daz...
Union President Advocates Federal Unemployment Compensation Action
By WILLIAM J. EATON
United Press International
WASHINGTON (UPI)—AFL-CIO President George Meany today advocated federal action to make unemployment compensation more than a "mere detour on the road to relief."
Meany presented labor's demand to increase the amount and duration of jobless payments in testimony prepared for the House Ways & Means Committee.
The AFL-CIO leader claimed the U.S. economy has not made a complete recovery. "True unemployment," he said, is now 5,800,000 instead of the 4,362,000 reported by the government for March.
He said the nearly two and one-half million workers on short shifts because of slack production are equal to 1,100,000 full-time unemployed. He said there is additional hidden unemployment because about 300,000 youngsters who would normally enter the labor market are too discouraged to look for jobs.
Asks New Law
Meany urged passage of a bill that would require states to pay benefits equal to half the weekly most workers for up to 39 weeks.
He said payments now averaging one-third of lost wages do not come close to paying a family's basic living costs.
"I don't think we are asking for much, but I want to say with all the conviction that I have that this is the difference between a compensation system that is doing the job and one that is a mere detour on the road to relief," he said.
The administration, which opposes federal standards, has requested extension of coverage to include 3,200,000 more workers in the jobless insurance program. It says the state should raise benefits.
Meany charged that the unemployment compensation program has been deteriorating ever since it was enacted in 1938 because the states have refused to increase benefits.
He gave these examples: In only five states can a worker receive half his average wage in jobless benefits. In only eight states, do all claims receive payments for at least 28 weeks.
Unemployment compensation taxes on employers have declined from an average of 4 cents per hour worked in 1939 to 1.3 cents per hour worked in 1958, he said.
Meany said last year's recession showed the need for across-the-board improvements in benefits. He said one-third of the 13 million Americans who were unemployed at one time or another during the year did not receive any benefits. Almost three million recipients exhausted benefits before they found a job, he added.
Michiko wore the same tiaras in the triumphal procession afterwards through the streets past cheering millions as Akihito bore her in a maroon and gold carriage to his Togu Palace. It was a dazzling horse and carriage procession rich with golden trappings and the color of royalty.
For this procession Akihito wore evening dress. Michiko wore a Western-style, off-the-shoulder evening gown. Around her shoulders was a stole.
The luck of Akihito held good today on the day of his wedding. Rain which fell in torrents early this morning stopped at dawn and

It was a dazed first bright sunshine in four days beat down on joyful crowds which swarmed the Imperial Palace plaza and the route of the newlyweds' carriage procession.
The procession moved across massive Nijubashi, the stone double bridge spanning the Imperial moat, and onto the palace plaza where more than 130,000 persons were jammed.
The crowds were quiet and restrained at the start, but as the procession moved into Tokyo's streets the crowd warmed up, cheering, applauding and even screaming.
An army of 12,500 policemen kept a most perfect control.
Today's wedding was a far cry from the old days of Imperial Japan. Hirohito, until the end of World War II, was considered a god-emperor so holy none could look upon his face as he rode through the streets on his white charger. Today people looked and smiled.
Generals, American Woman Get Credit
TOKYO (UPI) — Two generals and an American woman are primarily responsible for the wedding of Crown Prince Akihito and Michiko Shoda, a commoner.
They are:
— Gen. Hideki Tojo, who convinced Emperor Hirohito that Japan has no alternative but to wage war on the United States and that Japan would win.
— Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who came into Japan as the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces, influenced Hirohito to renounce his "sacred divinity," and gave Japan a democratic constitution in which men and women were given equal rights.
— Mrs. Elizabeth Grey Vining, the American tutor who taught Akihito during his most impressionable years and gave him strong concepts of the democratic way of life.
Finally, a train pulled in. The only passenger alighting was a little boy, in black uniform, about eight years old, escorted by a group of attendants. He was a prince, but a very remote relative of the Emperor.
Normal traffic was resumed half an hour later after the little boy left the station in a limousine.
Hirohito had a special station at Harajuku, near the present U.S. dependents' housing center known as Washington Heights, to make trips to areas in the Tokyo neighborhood.
I lived in the Harajuku area and can never forget those occasions.
Hours before the scheduled time of the Emperor's train's departure, policemen were in the area. Even those persons who lived several blocks away from the road to the Emperor's route, were told to clean up and take in their
