The Organization and Extension Persistent Liz, Eddie Fix Marriage Plans HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Actress Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher are running into all kinds of stumbling blocks, but they're going right ahead with their marriage plans. The couple learned Tuesday that the rabbi who officiated at Miss Taylor's conversion ceremonies last week when she embraced the Jewish faith will not be able to marry her and Fisher in Nevada next month. Rabbi Max Nussbaum, whom Miss Taylor, 27, asked to perform the wedding rites, was advised by three Nevada judges that he cannot perform the Nevada ceremony because he does not have a congregation in that state. Rabbi Nussbaum's congregation is in Hollywood. Committee is charged with the responsibility of organizing new boy scout units to make scouting available to the vast influx of young boys who have moved to the Anabeim area and is also responsible for reviewing each boy scout unit once yearly at the time that the sponsoring institutions charter is to be renewed. The work which the Post Office officials will specifically handle will be that of reviewing and rechartering the already established units. McFle, who has been a volunteer scouter for a number of years, was appointed by Luskey as co-chairman of the Organization and extension Committee and will share the chairmanship with Fred Allison, who is responsible for the organizing of new units, they said. Assisting McFle in the rechartering will be the following Post Officials: Andrew Ference, Robert Spielman, Robert Love, A. W. Krusse, Harvey Kirk, Joe de Stelguer, Richard Johnson, Clair Liebhart, Carlton S. Barthelmes, Theodore Corliss. L.A. Our constitution forbids "cruel and unusual punishment" like torture. But the federal government and most of the states punish certain crimes like first degree murder, kidnapping with bodily harm, and treason with the death penalty. People have always debated the justness of punishments, and their opinions often find expression in the law. Plato thought it was right to make slaves of war prisoners — if they were not Greeks. Today most discussion of punishment deals with the death penalty. Last year Delaware became the seventh state to give up the death sentence. Others: Michigan 1847; Rhode Island 1852; Wisconsin 1853; Maine 1887; Minnesota 1911; and North Dakota 1915. Nine other states once gave up and then reinstated capital punishment. Various citizens' groups are now debating the death sentence in California. Their questions are of two kinds: What are the facts, and what are the principles involved? Does it deter people from committing murder, kidnaping, etc.? If so, many think our safety demands it; if not, some think we ought to do away with it. What are the facts? As to principles, some regard the death penalty as a measure of strict justice, not of deterrence. "A life for a life." For them some criminals deserve death whether the law deters others or not. Still others hold that no provocation could justify the taking of a life. Related issues: Some say that the courts and juries do not apply the death sentence equally. In different courts, some who do equally "heinous" crimes get death and others get "life" with a chance of probation. Some claim the death sentence may cause deranged persons to commit crimes. Others think that the courts would convict more... WHAT PRICE MERCY? SWANSEA, England (UPI)—Officials at Swansea Children's Home found a price tag on their mercy today. The home is paying the laundress $3.50 more a week. BOMBS AWAY ST. HELIER, Isle of Jersey, England (UPI) — E. N. Walker, a bomb disposal expert, said his appeal for all dangerous war souvenirs had already brought him a number of anti-tank bombs and one hand grenade loaded with nitroglycerine. They came in the mail. BANZAI THE HORSES TOKYO (UPI) — A crowd of 2,200 police and volunteers waved flags and shouted "banzai" most of Wednesday on the grounds of the imperial palace — to condition the imperial horses for the wedding procession of Prince Akhito, April 10. CAPTURE JESSE JAMES MONTREAL (UPI) — Jesse James, 23, of Jackson, Miss., held as a burglary suspect, said he was no relation of the late outlaw of the same name. ALLERGIC MARKSMAN FT. BENNING, Ga. Several dozen takers were advised it must be an April Fool's joke. A school spokesman said: "I expect it was some girl who'd got into trouble, trying to get back at the schools." criminals deserve death whether the law deters others or not. Others think that the courts would convict more criminals with fewer delays without the death sentence. Should the law substitute a life in prison for the death sentence? Should there be a "life" sentence without any chance of parole? All of these are hard questions. Fullerton Special Election Date Set FULLERTON (OCNS) — A special election for the 18,761 registered Fullerton voters to decide the zoning fate of the Everett Davis parcel at Laguna Rd. was set for June 2 by the city council Tuesday night. The expected action followed a defeated motion by councilman Kermit Wood to repeal the ordinance which rezoned the 20-acre parcel from R-1 to R-3, C-2 and R-P and which became effective April 2. Wood's motion failed by a 4 to 1 count. That was also the final count on the special election, with the sole "no" vote cast by Wood. The election was deemed legal after the city clerk reported that approximately 12 per cent of the registered voters had signed a petition asking for the referendum. Of 2,458 signatures on this petition, she ruled 2,364 to be valid. Only 10 per cent of the registered voters are needed to establish a referendum election.
