Anaheim (Cal.) Bulletin—C-7 Wednesday, April 8, 1959 Fullerton Guard Unit Notes Rapid Increase A remarkable increase in recent months was reported by Fullerton's National Guard unit in personnel strength to boost the local unit very close to its imposed quota. In the three months since moving into the new $170,000 California National Guard Armory, a 30 per cent gain has been registered in enlistments, reports Capt. Raymond M. Cheseldine, Jr., commanding officer. Some 20 men have enlisted another two Guardsmen are at the six-month active duty training program, one has returned from the program since the Armory was occupied, and six applications for enlistments are pending. Capt. Cheseldine warned prospective young men that only two additional enlistments can be immediately taken in Company D of the 161st Armored Infantry Battalion before the Orange County unit reaches its maximum quotas. Men enlisting in this ready-reserve unit at this time will leave for the six-month program of the Army in May or June. Before and after that period, they will train at the Armory on an average of once a week for two hours. Full-time administrator, M-Sgt. Morris Crump, who is at the Armory weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., pointed out the difficulties of finding a Guard unit that has openings. Long Trip One new recruit travels weekly to the Valencia and Brookhurst Armory from El Monte because he said this was the closest unit he could find that was still able to take enlistments. Others journey from Long Beach and Los Angeles. The Guard has acquired the use of a large coastal area for training purposes and also holds land near El Toro. A third site is under negotiation in the Fullerton area. These areas are used for advanced field training problems and exercises. New subjects have been introduced in classes in recent months such as particular phases of battle drill tactics and more intense training is expected along certain fields such as possibly increased hours in atomic warfare. The Fullerton unit has a good number of personnel with many previous years of full-time service. Many of these men act as highly competent instructors and commissioned and non-commissioned officers. California Guard units inaugurated a new stepped-up, long-range training program late last year. Since then, officials report that the system has been moving swiftly and smoothly. Kraft Foods in BP To Honor Employe Albert L. Enquist, at the Kraft Foods plant in Buena Park, was honored for 10 years of service with the company, yesterday. The award, a gold tie bar bearing the Kraft emblem, will be presented at an office ceremony, and attended by fellow workers and executives. The award program was established by Kraft in 1945. Awards accompanied by a service citation certificate signed by J. C. Loftus president, are given for ten years of service and again for each five years of service thereafter. Albert L. Big Tract Developments Given Supervisors' OK By Orange County News Service Three tracts in the Costa Mesa, Anaheim, and Buena Park areas were approved Tuesday by the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Tract 2701 is an 11-acre parcel located west of Brookhurst and north of Ball Rd., in Anaheim. Plans call for 36 lots, on the property. Located east of Dale and south of Houston is tract 2595, a 15-acre parcel in the Buena Park area. The area is to be divided into 73 lots. The Costa Mesa tract is 2882, located off Fairview and east of Harbor. The property will be subdivided into 49 lots. The tract consists of 10 acres.
