Law In the News
A judge can make decisions, reach judgments, and issue orders, but who carries them out? Within the state, our sheriffs do. For the federal courts the U. S. marshal and his deputies do the work.
The marshal is a sort of federal sheriff named by the President for four years. His orders come from the Department of Justice and the court he serves.
Like the sheriff, he has his deputies to make arrests on federal warrants, serve papers in lawsuits, subpoena witnesses, summon jury-men, and seize property on federal court.writs.
The marshal also manages the money set aside for federal courts, paying federal judges, witness and jury fees, and the board and room of federal prisoners in local jails.
Unlike the county, the federal government has no/local jails. So, the marshal pays the room, and board at local jails for prisoners awaiting trial or commitment.
For prisoners waiting a few hours to appear for trial or to make bond, the marshal may have a small office lockup. The marshal's work is often exciting, but mostly he follows on the routine for the courts.
Long ago when much of the West was territories and not states, he often had to enforce local law, now a job of the police and the county sheriff.

College Students Aid Sheriff Rodeo
Unique in association is the relationship established between the Riverside City College Greek Council Fraternities and Sororities and the Sheriff's Rodeo Association to promote the 1959 Sheriff's Rodeo scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 16, 17.
As a project in connection with the fundamentals and ideals of their college activities, students taking such subjects as advertising, public relations, journalism and art are trying their talents to assist in expanding the Sheriff's Rodeo.
150 students, members of Kappa Upsilon, Gamma Nu, Gamma Iota Alpha, Delta Chi Delta, and Sigma Phi Kappa are concentrating their efforts to expand their knowledge in a practical way by participating in the promotion activities. As a result, their organizations will earn a percentage of the proceeds to use in their scholarship funds.
Dean of Women, Mary Wallace and Dean of Men, Leonard Metcalf, are acting as coordinators between the Greek Council organizations and the Rodeo Association.
Plans are being considered that if the association of the groups should prove successful, to make it a yearly relationship.
"We are finally experiencing some of the goals we have been striving for by having organizations such as these join us in the Sheriff's Rodeo," Gil Mundy, Rodeo Chairman noted. "It is our belief that we present the finest of entertainment that it is possible to witness and our desire to continue such community events as this. We need the help of interested groups to make it successful and we are happy to have the City College groups with us."
The rodeo is a non-profit venture with all funds retained for expansion and improvement of the yearly presentation.

Car Wash, Stores Set For Harbor - Katella
The Planning Commission granted the Orangewood Development Co., of Los Angeles, a variance Monday to construct a car wash and a number of service stores, including a combination liquor and drug store on R-A property located generally at the northeast intersection of Katella Ave., and Harbor Blvd.
Parcel A, which is to house the car wash, faces onto Harbor from the east side of the street, while Parcel B faces onto Katella from the south. The proposed stores, however, will face toward the back of a service station located on the northeast corner of the intersection.
The stores proposed are a beauty parlor, a barber shop, and the drug and liquor store.
Inflation
ROCHESTER, N. Y. (UPI) — Edward Hurley Jr., who failed to pay a total of $13 for 10 parking tickets, wound up with a 50-day penitentiary sentence when he was unable to comply with a judge's order to pay off the tickets at $25 each.
Rivers and lakes are not as buoyant as the ocean. A ship settles one foot deeper in fresh water than in salt water for every 36 feet of draft.
