NEW YORK (UPI) — The 31st annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards in Hollywood Monday night had 120 minutes to fill and, even with the end of a legion of stars, could barely fill 105 of those minutes.
As seen on NBC-TV, the 1950 Oscar parade was just too much. It had too much in the way of stars with nothing to do but smile; too much in the way of static, head-on camera shots of the Oscar awarders that gave the show an unexpected flatness, and monotony, a lack of sparkle and life.
The cameras riveted on the emcees while I'm sure, some dramatic facial expressions could have been picked up in the audience. I think this is a show that should be filled with suspense, humor, happiness and sadness, excitement and drama. Instead, we got a tedious procession of winner after winner, star after star. The suspense, the drama, were missing. The life was rehearsed right out of the show.
And the ending — same on Hollywood for that one. A stage-filled with talent milling around, looking for graceful ways to exit, is hardly the way to end a show of this kind. And there were some lapses in taste.
How to improve this show? Next year, I'd like to see the production, or part of it, tucked into a studio instead of a crowded stage behind a dals. Then choreographers, set designers and performers could do their work.
and the George Gobel show will alternate on Sunday nights at 10 starting Sept. 27 for CBS-TV. Benny and the American Tobacco Co-part after 20 years as Lever Brothers assumes full sponsorship. The time switch means Richard Diamond, private eye, gets knocked off again. Dick Van Dyke will be the encee of Laugh Line, a new panel-comedy show that moves into the NBC-TV line-up Thursday, April 16. Zea Zsa Gabor, not to be outdone by sister Eva's recent ice-skating act on ABC-TV's You Asked For It, gets equal time to demonstrate how she fences, plays ping pong and polo on the April 19 stanza.
The Donna Reed show, now a Wednesday night entry on ABC-TV, moves to Thursday night at 8 starting in October. This earlier time means Zorro will have to move. Bud Palmer replaces Mel Allen as emcee of NBC-TV's Jackpot Bowling starting this Friday after the Cavalcade of Sports fight. Broken Arrow returns to ABC-TV Sunday, Oct. 11, after a year's absence. John Lupton and Michael Ansara will take up where they left off last season.
Mary Livingston will be hubby Jack Benny's guest on the Sunday, May 3, CBS-TV half-hour.

Radioactive Dumping Fails to Taint Land
'BOSTON (UPI) — Wells, and crops near the Oak Ridge, Tenn., national laboratory have remained uncontaminated even though three million gallons of radioactive waste is dumped into pits each year, it was reported today.
Donald G. Jacobs of Oak Ridge, the government laboratory operated by Union Carbide Nuclear Co., and William J. Lacey of the office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, Battle Creek, Mich., spoke at the 135th national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Lacy, senior chemist at Oak Ridge at the time of the studies, said tests showed no leakage of radioactive waste to surrounding test wells and plant life.
Results of the work were expected to help other atomic installations which dispose of their wastes by dumping in selected geologic formations.

Father Turns Killer To Destroy Family
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (UPI)
Mrs. Frances Kraus was the only alive today of her six-member immediate family. Her unplayed husband killed their three children, his sister and himself Monday in a frenzied rampage.
Mrs. Kraus, 45, arrived home from her clerk-typeist job Monday to be greeted by her husband Kirk, 48, who said: "Our worry are over. The children are dead."
He attacked Mrs. Kraus and tempted to strangle her, but she broke free and took refuge within a neighbor.
Kraus then set their house fire, in which the bodies of the children, Linda, 12, Donald, 9, Richard, 8, and his sister, Mr. Elizabeth Kraus, 50, lay streak about. He died on the way to the hospital from smoke poisoning.
Police called the tragedy "mass murder and suicide." The said Kraus, who frequently dragged heavily, strangled the children and his sister.
Kraus recently had been leased from a Veterans Administration hospital where he had been treated for a nervous disorder. He had been unemployed and depressed lately, neighbors saluted Mrs. Kraus was hospitalized shock.

Paul Robeson Plays 'Othello' in England

Robeson just recently arrived in England from his latest visit to Moscow, where he made a movie on his life. He fell ill in Russia with respiratory troubles, and it was feared for a time that he would be unable to open the 100th Stratford season tonight with his famous interpretation of Othello.

Atom ‘Skate’ Returns After Polar Conquest
NEW LONDON, Conn. (UPI)—The nuclear-powered U.S. submarine Skate returns today from the North Pole where, on March 17, she broke through the ice pack of the Arctic and surfaced at the North Pole.
An enthusiastic welcome awaited the Skate’s skipper, Cmdr. James F. Calvert, and his crew of 106 as the submarine returns to her home berth.
On its epic trip to the North Pole, the Skate proved the possibility of year-round submarine operations in the frigid north. It is now believed that U.S. subs with long range Polaris missiles will be able to work in Arctic waters near Russia at all times.
The Skate left New London on March 4. During the voyage, which lasted 12 days under ice, the Skate logged 3,000 miles and surfaced 10 times—once exactly at the North Pole.

Drop Child Stealing
Charges Against Pair
PALM SPRINGS (UPI) — Child stealing charges against two men who admitted bungling an attempt to abduct the children of a steel firm executive were dismissed Monday in Municipal Court.
District Attorney William O. Mackey told Judge Eugene Therlau that Richard Raese, Morgantown, W.Va., had left the state with his children and there were no grounds for prosecution.
Private detective Ray G. Moulton, 49, San Jose, and railroad conductor Charles S. Lewis, 33, Warm Springs, were released.
The men said they were hired by Raese's form wife, Mrs. James Kelly, to return the children to her. She claimed she had been awarded their custody in Dade County, Fla.
Raese, vice president of the Greet Steel Co., which is owned by his former wife's family, said she had "no legal right" to her sons.
"I was given custody of the children in West Virginia after the divorce four years ago," Raese said.
Moulton and Lewis hustled Richard, 10, and John, 8, into their car March 29. David, 6, fled screaming for help. The men were captured and their young prisoners released when neighbors stopped the car.
