Sheinwold on Bridge
By ALFRED SHEINWOLD
U.S. Masters Team Champion
Italian Master
Avoids Trap
The Italian bridge team won its third straight world championship two months ago by defeating the United States and Argentine in a three-cornered contest in New York. The Italians earned their victory by playing first class bridge throughout, which is unfortunately more than can be said for the other two teams. Here is one of the fine Italian hands:

Sam Fry, holding the East cards, made a fine play by refusing the first club trick. The idea was to hornswoggle declarer into repeating the finesse. If South made this mistake, Fry would take the king of clubs and get out safely with a heart. Then declarer would have to give up a diamond trick sooner or later.
It was a fine trap, but Forquet didn't tumble into it. The Italian master could afford to put up dummy's ace of clubs. If only low clubs fell on this trick, he could take the diamond finesse and could at worst give up one diamond trick.
As it happened, the king of clubs fell under dummy's ace, and Forquet made all 13 tricks.

U.S. Commerce At W
Foreign students, scientists professors, representing colleges from all over the world, field trip to Thrifty Drug recently, under the auspices of UCLA Institute of Industrial Lizations. The group, now stationed at California universities and leges, toured Thrifty's office warehouse facilities, dismantled work problems with employees enjoyed frank and informal with management officials west coast's largest drug vending and junior department store.
The future foreign opinioners from the continents of Europe, Asia, Australia and America were given the opportunity for seminar type discourses with Thrifty executives as part of UCLA's 3-day Foreign Conference.
The conference supported Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles Federal Labor, AFL-CIO, and other municipal organizations is dedicated to give the students an overview of the problems and actions of the American free press system.
In addition to their work Thrifty, the students studied manufacturing at American College Also leading government, and educational leaders with the students in a series lectures and discussion groups the UCLA campus.
The UCLA Foreign Student conference is one of the first conferences for foreign students in the United States.

The bidding followed the tenets of the Neapolitan Club System. The opening bid of one notrump promised only a good club suit and the values for an opening bid. South bid diamonds first in order to jump in spades later, thus showing a hand with slam possibilities and a very strong spade suit.
The rest of the bidding was strange but logical. Pietro Forquet and Gugilelmo Siniscalco got to the fine slam in spades. In the other room of the match, an American pair stopped at game on the North-South cards.
The play was just as interesting as the bidding. West's opening lead knocked out dummy's ace of hearts. Forquet led out three rounds of trumps and then led the queen of clubs for a finesse.

Billy Graham Opens New Zealand Campaign
AUCKLAND, N.Z. (UPI)—Billy Graham opened his New Zealand "crusade" Friday night with a sermon delivered before 50,000 persons here and relayed via radio to all parts of the country.
The crowd that assembled in an Auckland football stadium to hear the American evangelist waited for as long as 10 hours for his arrival. Several thousand were converted.
In Christchurch, 80 convicts were temporarily released from their cells so they could hear Graham on the prison radio.
Amateur Paleontology Students An Asset
BERKELEY, Calif., (UPI)—Dr. Sam Welles, principal curator in the University of California's museum of paleontology here, is all for amateur fossil hunters.
Welles points out that "serious amateurs have often turned up important finds by combing fossil-bearing areas during periods when the professional paleontologist is busy with palmstalk laboratory work on fossils already collected."
According to the curator, one of the best things for an amateur fossil hunter to do is to go to a local museum, get in touch with an expert and work along with him. The professional paleontologist can tell the amateur where to go and what to look for.
In this way, Welles feels, if a spectacular find is made, proper care can be taken with a view to preparing the specimen for museum display.
