Hotel for Animal Air Travelers
Doing Just Fine, No Complaints
By DOC QUIGG
United Press International
NEW YORK (UPI) — The only hotel of its kind in this hemisphere — it caters exclusively to animal air travelers, including snakes, gorillas, elephants, penguins, eagles, skunks, anteaters, rats, llamas, and common kitty cats — is doing just fine, with no complaints from guests.
A report from the "Animal-port" at New York International Airport shows that in one year and one month of operation it has housed 22,500 walking, flying, and alithering creatures representing 72 animal species. Monkeys were the most. There were 12,677 of them.
The airborne monkeys mostly were en route from overseas to various institutions of science to help out with such things as Salk vaccine manufacture. Dogs were the next most frequent guest—2,673 of them. There were 166 snakes, including one seven-footer which escaped its bag and was found snoozing curled around an electric motor. There also was one 345-pound beer-drinking lion.
“Ninety per cent of our traffic is international,” said George Bauer, the resident manager, “and 90 per cent of the dog traffic is GI. The GI’s get the dogs in Europe while they’re serving there, and when they get transferred back to the U.S.A., they send the dogs by separate air transport. Military transfer being what it is, the GI’s sometimes arrive two or three days behind the dog, which we keep for him.”
The 5,000-square-foot, $300,000 Animalport building is a private operation, built and maintained by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to assure owners, shippers and airlines that pets and all other livestock get professional attention. Its slogan is “No animal too big or too small, no diet too intricate or exotic.”

Scientific Experiments to Aid Decisions in Cancer Operation
By DELOS SMITH
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. (UPI)—The surgeon about to operate on a cancer patient tears open a sealed envelope and inside is a slip of paper which says whether this patient is going to get an anti-cancer drug along with an operation. Or, perhaps, a flip of a coin decides.
That is the basis of scientific experiments going on all over the country. It is for the purpose of deciding whether this chemical “adjuvant therapy” will improve surgery’s already respectable record for saving or prolonging the lives of the victims of certain cancers caught in an early stage.
In Chicago it has been going on for three years and two months. In that time, 40 women with breast cancer got the drug “adjuvant” to surgery and 40 got the surgery only. Recurrences and deaths both have been twice as high among the surgery only group.
Sounds good, but Dr. Warren Cole, of the University of Illinois, Chicago, who revealed these experimental results, refused to say “adjuvant” therapy was the best and refused to recommend it to other surgeons. And so did Dr. I. S. Ravidin, of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, who took part in the surgery on both President Eisenhower and Secretary of State Dulles, and is president of the American Surgical Society.
There are other things to consider besides statistical numbers, they added. The “adjuvant” to surgery in these cases was nitrogen mustard which is a poisonous drug.
It can be used against cancer because it is more lethal against cancer cells than it is against normal cells. As an “adjuvant,” it is used to wipe out any cancer cells which the surgery left behind.
