DEATH WEAPON — This is the .25-caliber revolver which Connie Nicholas is accused of having used to kill her former lover, Forrest Teel, in Indianapolis. Teel was killed by three bullets. Verona, was driving also west on Ball when they apparently collided. Child Beating Trial Set for Orange Dad By Orange County News Service The preliminary trial of Nicholas Swanson, 38, of 13591 Compton, Orange, charged with sticking a bar of soap in his step - daughters mouth and then beating the 6-year old child, has been set for April 13 in the Santa Ana-Orange Municipal Court. The aircraft worker, whose bail has been set at $3,500, is reported in Orange County jail today. The victim of the beating was little Christine Doty, who was reportedly black and blue after the alleged beating given her by Swanson. He assertedly grabbed her by the legs, lifted her so that her head touched the ground, then beat her with a strap. Ward, professor of virology at Notre Dame University. His report appeared in the current issue of Today's Health, an American Medical Association publication. No drug on the market can be considered effective against colds, Ward said. But he believes a vaccine can be developed against 60 to 70 per cent of all colds caused by bacteria or a virus. About 20 per cent of common colds are really due to allergies or wishful thinking, he said. Ward said he believed the vaccine would not be entirely effective because "people are not going to take the vaccine, just as they are not taking the polio vaccine." Final Jail Building Plans Due for County SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Final plans for a 400-inmate auxiliary county jail near the county hospital are to be submitted to county supervisors about May 1, Willis Warner, board chairman, said today. Upon approval of the detailed drawings, supervisors will then advertise for construction bids. Actual work on the site could get underway in June. The jail is to be built on Placeia Ave., near Lampson Ave., adjacent to the County Animal Shelter. It will relieve severe overcrowding in the old county jail in downtown Santa Ana. Anaheim Dentists Join County Hospital Staff ORANGE (OCNS) — Three more Orange County dentists, Dr. William Keesecker of Anaheim, Dr. FBI Director Named Year’s ‘Humanitarian’ LAS VEGAS (UPI) — FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover today was named "Humanitarian of the Year" by the Variety Club International, worldwide organization of entertainment industry personages. Formal announcement of Hoover’s designation will be made tonight at the new Las Vegas Convention Center where 1,200 delegates end their annual convention with a heart fund dinner. Variety clubs are dedicated to humanitarian activities. Hoover was chosen because of his “tremendous and continuing contributions in the fight against juvenile delinquency,” according to Edward Shafton, Omaha, Neb., attorney who headed Variety’s Awards Committee. Hubby’s Loaded Rifle Causes Hassle For Wife FULLERTON (OCNS) — Young Anaheim housewife was taken handcuffed to police head quarters at 3:40 p.m., Thursday after a loaded shotgun, an unloaded rifle, a hunting knife and a metal sap were discovered in his car, but she was released when officers found no crime to mate their suspicions. The “apprehension” in the block of N. Spadra Rd., drew crowds of several hundred persons. Police said they stopped the passing car, after hearing a count wide broadcast for information in the car. Officers said a bullet hole was in the right wind wing. The riffle were on the back seat floor, covered with a shirt and the knit was in the trunk. The woman was released after she told officers her husband had used the weapons to go hunting recently. She apparently did not know one of the weapons was loaded, police said. Countian Comes Out Best In Road Hassle By Orange County News Service A judgment pertaining to an enlistment domain suit that had been under advisement, was given Thursday by Superior Judge Robert Kneeland. The case involves parcel of land along the south side of Katella east of Placentia, which is sought by the county for his way purposes. Judge Kneeland awarded property owner Ray Bivens $15,300, plus $10,000 for severance to the law on the property. Another $000 was awarded for improvement on the property. The judge also awarded the fendant special benefits for provenances on the property. Will received interest on the price of the property since 1957, it ruled. Anaheim Dentists Join County Hospital Staff ORANGE (OCNS) — Three more Orange County dentists, Dr. William Keeesecker of Anaheim, Dr. Donald R. Tiedike of Anaheim, and Dr. Wallace C. Kvilvang of San Clemente have joined the volunteer staff of the Orange County General Hospital. There are now 170 dentists throughout the county who donate a half day service to the dental care of persons unable to pay for treatment. Most of the patients are children referred by school nurses or social workers. Salk School have both scheduled organizational meetings for MonGifted Students To Be Aided By State Funds Hydrogen Rocket Fuel Pact Set in California WASHINGTON (UPI)—The federal space agency today contracted for supplies of liquid hydrogen to power heavy satellite and space probe rockets and nuclear spacecraft of the future. The contract, to run for five years, covers West Coast purchases of liquid hydrogen. It was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NSA) to the Linde Co., a division of the Union Carbide Corp. Linde will expand its facilities at Torrance, Calif., and is scheduled to begin production of the powerful rocket fuel by next April. Sophia Loren Tussle In Film Sprains Ankle HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Italian actress Sophia Loren was walking around today with a sprained arm, the result of a too-real struggle with actor Steve Forest during the filming of a motion picture. Miss Loren and Forest had practiced the struggling scene for "Heller With A Gun" but when they went before the cameras Thursday the lovely actress complained of pain in her arm after the tussle. She was taken to California Hospital where doctors X-rayed the arm and said they were treating it as a sprain although the e was a very slight possibility that one of the arm-bones had been cracked. More X-rays were planned. Two State Hospitals Receive Accreditation SACRAMENTO (UPI) — Dr. Scout Organization Meetings Set for April 6 Interest in Boy Scouting is so strong in Magnolia School District that the PTA's of the Robert M. Pyles School and the Dr. Jonas E. Salk School have both scheduled organizational meetings for Monday evening, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in their respective multi-purpose rooms to start new Scout units. The meeting at each school is open to parents whose sons are interested in scouting. It is the first of a series of three which are required of parents by the rules of the Boy Scouts to start any new unit and is designed to acquaint the parents with the various phases of Scouting. The Robert M. Pyles School, which opened last fall, does not have any Boy Scout or Cub units as yet. However, the PTA voted in December of sponsor them and Thomas C. Hamlin was appointed Institutional Representative following their most recent meeting, which featured youth organizations. The organizational meeting at Pyles Monday evening will be to definitely start a Cub Pack, and a Boy Scout troop if there is enough interest shown to warrant one, according to Mrs. Robert E. Huff, PTA youth chairman. The Pyles meeting will be in charge of Fred Allison, chairman of the Organizational and Extension committee of the Boy Scouts, Hamlin, and Mrs. Huff. The Salk School has no Boy Scout troop at present, although two Cub Packs meet there. The meeting at Salk School is to start a Boy Scout unit only. Boy Scouts range in age from 11 years up and Cub Scouts are from 8 years thru 10 years. Ed Smith with 17 years experience in Scouting is area commissioner and is making the arrangements for the meeting at the Salk school. Petitions Circulate To Annex to Anaheim A petition requesting annexation of the Tiller Rd. Area to Anaheim today is being circulated by Mrs. Beverly Boenau, 13272 Tiller Rd. The annexation request entails some 140 homes. Mrs. Boenau told the Bulletin that two men were involved in the process. Gifted Students To Be Aided By State Funds California's secondary schools will get a $372,000 boost this spring in their continuing efforts toward maximum use of student learning power. Roy E. Simpson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, today announced first allocations from the fund, made available for distribution by the State Department of Education under Title V of Public Law 864. Among the 57 allocations listed today is $2,900 to the Orange County Superintendent of schools. More than 150 applications for the funds were received by the February 28 deadline. In addition to the 57 allocations announced today, totaling $131,166, another 40 will be announced next week. Action on the remaining 53 is anticipated following modification of the applications. The money will be used to develop local programs for identification, guidance and encouragement of students with outstanding aptitudes and abilities. Public Law 864 contemplates financial assistance to states over a four-year period. The law, passed by the 85th Congress, is an effort to meet the need for capable persons in science, mathematics, languages and technical occupations related to the national security. Distribution of funds by the Department of Education is on the basis of proposed local plans for secondary school use, as set forth in written applications. The $372,000 now being committed by the Department of Education is for use during the current school year, ending June 30, 1950. Actual distribution of moneys will be on a reimbursement basis following certification of expenditures. The hospital was the second California facility named in recent weeks to the nationally select list of state hospitals given the recognition. The officials said that they didn't know where the men obtained such a petition, as no record of it is in city hall. Saturday, April 4, 1958 Anhehn (CoL) Bulletin—A-7 U.S. Fathers Placed In 'Third Party' Role WASHINGTON (UPI) — Social anthropologist Otto Von Mering of the University of Pittsburgh, today told fathers to "stop feeling rejected" and take it in their strides. He said that American fathers are the middle guys, the mediators and the "third persons" in the family relationship today. Dr. Von Mering noted that fathers begin to feel left out of the family when their wives appear to concentrate all their time on the children. He said the mother-child alliance is a natural "coalition" and papa usually retreats into the role of a "side-walk superintendent and Monday morning quarterback." In doing so, Dr. Von Mering told the biannual meeting of the Family Service Assn. that the father "short changes" his children of the experiences that they need to grow to healthy maturity. Mosk Appoints Man To Help Oust Ogle At the request of the Orange County Grand Jury, Attorney General Stanley Mosk is assigning a member of his staff to assist in scheduled proceedings for the removal from office of County Counsel Joel Ogle. Clarence A. Linn, Chief Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Division of Criminal Law and Enforcement, will participate in the people's case, Mosk said. Trial of the civil charges, which allege willful misconduct in office, is scheduled to begin April 6, in Santa Ana Superior Court. The Grand Jury Asserts that Ogle violated his public trust in allegedly accepting valuable gifts from persons with whom he had official business. Billy Graham Opens N. Zealand Crusade CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (UPI) — American evangelist Billy Graham opened his New Zealand crusade before a crowd of 50,000 persons in Auckland tonight. His address to the huge throng, one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Auckland, was relayed by headlines to cities and towns in all parts of the country. In Christchurch, one group of 80 prisoners listened to him on the radio and then returned to their jail cells. State Park Attendance Jumps To All-Time High SACRAMENTO (UPI) — Attendance at California's state-operated parks, beaches and monuments increased from about 11 million persons in 1956 to 20,058,774 persons in 1958. According to the State Division of Beaches and Parks, an increase was noted to all lake State Parks. Turlock Lake State Park had an increase of 70,000; Folsom Lake increased 400,000; Millerton Lake, 800,000 and Salton Sea, 95,-000. Elsinore Lake State Park had an attendance of 204,000 in 1958.
