Local Businessmen Oppose State Agency
In an attempt to stop curtailment of the business and industrial growth of Anaheim, Orange County and the State of California, the Anahelp Chamber of Commerce went on record in opposition of Senate Bill number 43 concerning the establishment of a State Economic Development Agency in California.
Basically the Chamber of Commerce members who are industrialists, businessmen and professional men, are attempting to stop the unnecessarily levying taxes "that will eventually break the State of California and will most certainly bring to a halt all economic development."
As stated in the correspondence to Luther E. Gibson, Chairman of the Senate Governmental Efficiency Committee in Sacramento, the Chamber stated that "it is the firm conviction of our Board of Directors that a truly outstanding job in Economic Development has already taken place in the State of California primarily through the efforts of Chambers of Commerce, cities and interested private citizens. This has all been done without the expenditure of tax funds."
Objection to the proposed legislation has been forwarded not only to the Senate Governmental Efficiency Committee but to Senator John Murdy, Jr., and to Assemblymen Richard T. Hanna.

One of America’s ‘Top Ten’ Singers, Most Popular U.S. Star in Soviet
By VERNON SCOTT
UPI Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Know it is the most popular American singer in Russia (discounting Robeson)?
Orris Day!
No one is more surprised than breezy, all-American blonde the news that her recordings sell any other U. S. platters the U.S.S.R. — and she can’t understand why.
It’s flattering, I guess,” Doris said. “But I’m mystified. Maybe I should sing a special song in Russian and send it over.
Engineer To Speak To Constitution Party
In meeting of the Constitution party of Orange County will be Friday, April 10, at Santiago Park, Santa Ana, at the Lawn Swing Club House, at 7:45 p.m. Major E. Eller of San Diego will speak. The public is invited to attend and hear his address, entitled from W. P. A. to Commissar. Eller holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and Law. For years, he has practiced in the field of Electrical engineering electronics, radar, and instrumentation for the United States and foreign governments. He has specialized in the field of guided missiles and gyroscopes. During this time he has maintained a professional, well as a personal interest in fields of economics and national politics. His experience gained close observation in theseHow about something like ‘When the Communists flock to Vladivostok.’ It just might make their hit parade.”
Doris, bright as a spring day in pink sweater, ruffled blouse and gray flannel slacks, also has the distinction of being the only consistent feminine vocalist among the top 10 recording stars in this country.
Among Rock 'N' Rollers
It comes as something of a shock to find her name among those of Ricky Nelson; Elvis Presley; Tommy Sands; Pat Boone and other rock 'n' roll fanatics.
“I must appeal to the same teenage group,” she surmised.
“But I don’t sing the same kind of music. Maybe I've been fortunate in having so many good songs come my way. New ones I mean.”
“Personally I wish more girl singers were as popular as the young male vocalists. More women and girls buy records than men, and I guess the female population would rather listen to male voices.”
To preserve her place at the top of the platter pile Doris records two albums a year and cuts four single records every six weeks. This in addition to turning out two movies a year.
It was Doris’ voice, however, that brought her movie stardom. She succeeded where other big-name vocalists (Dinah Shore, Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee) failed. The others turned to television, with varying degrees of success, but the Cincinnati-born songbird is sticking to pictures.
LIZ TO ‘QUIT’ MOVIE CAREER
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — The San Francisco News quoted Elizabeth Taylor as saying today “I plan to quit the movies forever.”
The News, a Scripps-Howard newspaper, sald in a copyright dispatch from Las Vegas that Miss Taylor made the statement in an interview in Eddie Fisher’s dressing room in the Tropicana Hotel there.
“I have three more pictures to do,” she said. “I should be finished with them in about 18 months. After that, finish.
“My family life is more important to me than my career. How many Hollywood marriages do you know of where the wife is an actress and the marriage still works.”
Miss Taylor’s statement came only a few hours after Debbie Reynolds agreed to a Nevada divorce which will free Fisher in six weeks to marry Miss Taylor.

No Time For TV
"I just don't have time for TV," she explained. "My only appearances were on 'What's My Line' and the 'Academy Award Show.' I've thought about doing a spectacular, but I'd want it to be on the same scale as Fred Astaire's program. Too many people are watching not to give your very best."
Doris, 1958's boxoffice champ among actresses, currently is teamed with the male boxoffice leader, Rock Hudson, in "Any Way The Wind Blows" at Universal-International.
There is an animation, a melody in her voice even when she talks.
"Once the picture is over I head out across country to plug the opening of another movie." she said happily. "But I'm leaving early to spend some time in my home town—Cincinnati."
