COLD WAR Cold War May Extend To U.S. Plumbing Facilities By FRANK ELEAZER United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) — A cultural exhibit to be opened by the United States in Moscow on July 4 is said to be taking shape fast. But the fate of what was to have been one of our proudest displays hangs in doubt. The Russians, according to recent sorrowful testimony by exhibit officials, insist on handling all the plumbing for our big show in their own inscrutable way. So it's anybody's guess now whether the 150 gleaming toilets and related items which we have dispatched to Moscow will be operational at the exhibit exactly as planned. "There are some things," admitted Harold C. McClellan, the show's general manager, "on which we (and the Russians) have not had a complete meeting of the minds. This is one of them." Must Use Reason Arrangements for the U. S. exhibit in Moscow were made during an "on" period in Russia's ongoing off-again campaign of international sweetness and light. Under the agreement the Russians will be running a similar show this summer in New York City. Our show in Sokolniki Park will cost $3,600,000. Officials say this is a bargain. They expect 3,500,000 Russians to see the exhibits. "We hope to show a cross-section of the U. S. and its people," McClellan told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "how they live, how they work, what they do on Saturday, what they do over one of the most impressive exhibits that could be made." Senator," replied McClellan wearily, "I did the best I could. I arranged here in the United State for delivery to the Soviets of 150 toiletts if they would install them and put a building over them. "We even offered to help on that, but they said they would prefer to do it their own way and that they would provide adequate facilities. Senator, there are many problems involved." Sen. Albert Gore (D - Tenn.), then wound up the discussion as follows: "I will wager you will have big water boxes about 8 feet high. You will yank a chain, and it will sound like a TVA dam broken loose." Gore has been around. Cedar Units Have Large Variety For Selection Engaged girls are both old-fashioned and unique plan for home financing. A revolutionary "trust plan" type of financing that enables families to purchase a home without using their hard-earned capital for a down payment is being offered to Southland home buyers for the first time at Bellehurst. Never before offered in local real estate circle, the "trust plan accomplishes home ownership without tieing up capital often needed for business or other investment purposes. The "trust plan" permits a buyer to move in without down payment and pay monthly only interest on the selling price plus taxes and insurance. The plan accomplishes property ownership with no liability if the buyer wishes to continue the plan at any time. The buyer may never pay on the principal loan, although the home is a transferrable asset which can be sold as property values increase or conditions warranted. The home may be paid for at an again off-again campaign of international sweetness and light. Under the agreement the Russians will be running a similar show this summer in New York City. Our show in Sokolniki Park will cost $3,600,000. Officials say this is a bargain. They expect 3,500,000 Russians to see the exhibits. "We hope to show a cross-section of the U. S. and its people," McClellan told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "how they live, how they work, what they do on Saturday, what they do over the week end." "Don't go too far on that," cautioned Committee Chairman J. William Fulbright (D-Ark.), whose ideas of the typical American Saturday night can only be guessed at. "I mean you have got to use reason." McClellan indicated he would. Two big buildings to house the show have been prefabricated in this country for shipment to Russia. They will be mostly glass and aluminum and one will be capped by a gold anodized aluminum dome 78 feet high and 200 feet across. After a run of six weeks the show will be closed and Russia will buy the buildings at half the $750,000 they cost us. Updated Centerama Outside, entertainers like Danny Kaye will perform on a bandstand. Inside, Ivan will see an updated version of the Centerama 360 degree movie that was popular at Brussels plus asorted displays on science, technology and art, including a complete home, a Cadillac and a Rambler, and 50 "first rate" American paintings. On the latter point Fulbright, who is hard to please, commented, "'It will be hard to find that many.'" Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D-Minn.), an old Russian-hand after his marathon talk with Khrushchev last fall, brought up the matter of the bathroom facilities. "There is reason to believe according to some of our observers," he said, "that this might be SAVE LIFETIME, RUST-PROOF ALUMINUM WINDOW SCREENS as low as 2.66 ea. CATES Weatherstrip and Screen Co. They are old-fashioned in their sentiment. They want a place to collect treasures for their new home before the wedding and to protect woolens in years to come. They are modern in selecting a chest incorporated in a piece of furniture that will serve some other useful purpose. Cedar-lined storeage units today are built in telephone benches, desks, living room cabinets, chests, chest-on-chests, window seats and more traditionally, benches for the foot of a bed. Style variety is just as wide. Danish, Oriental, Early American, provincial and even Pennsylvania Dutch chests are popular. Industrial Employment Looks Good in State SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — The California industrial employment picture, for the beginning of a year, never looked better than during February, the Department of Labor Statistics reported today. The department said 4,478,000 wage and salary workers were on the job in February—an all-time high for the month. Every major industrial division reported higher employment than for the same period in 1958, with the exception of transportation, communication and utilities. The largest employment gains were made in manufacturing, trade and civil service. Nonfarm employment between January and February increased more than 20,000. Even the motion picture industry, stunted somewhat by the advent of television, showed an increase in seasonal expansion and production. Nothing to Crow About BRIDGEPORT, Conn. The majority of Bellehurst homes, ranging in price from $2,000 to $125,000, are available for sale under the terms of the "trust plan." Only 130 prestige lots are for sale in Bellehurst for homeowners who wish to build their own home. Buyers who begin construction on their new homesite Bellehurst before July 1 are offered special considerations, spokesman said.
