Joel Ogle Cases
Slated for
Riverside Judge
By Orange County News Service
Judge John Gabbert of Riverside County has been assigned to hear the two "Joel Ogle Cases" because superior court judges in this county have decided they know the defendant too well.
Ogle, who is county counsel, faces trial on a grand jury indictment of accepting a bribe. Grand jury witnesses gave conflicting testimony on whether he had accepted a $10,000 payoff in 1955 in connection with an amendment to the Camden-Dayton Oil Co. drilling contract upon Orange County tidelands. Ogle denied the alleged payoff.
Ogle also has been accused by the grand jury of willful misconduct in accepting expensive gifts and financial favors from Wesley West, millionaire oilman who is president of the firm that now holds an oil drilling contract upon county tidelands.

Ogle also has been accused by the grand jury of willful misconduct in accepting expensive gifts and financial favors from Wesley West, millionaire oilman who is president of the firm that now holds an oil drilling contract upon county tidelands.
Ogle admits acceptance of the gifts, but denies that there was any misconduct involved because West and the county are partners in a suit against the State of California for possession of tidelands.
The grand jury charges of accepting a bribe is punishable by removal from office, and one to 14 years prison term.
The accusation of misconduct is punishable only by removal from office.
Trial on this accusation is scheduled to open next Monday, but Ogle has indicated he will ask that it be continued until after his trial on the bribery charge because the bribery sentence would be stronger than the accusation punishment.
Orange County Superior Judge Karl Davis will sit on the bench in Riverside County during the period that Judge Gabbert is here in Orange County hearing the Ogle cases.

LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Local citrus report as prepared by Federal-State Market News Service:
Buena Park to Call for Bids on Restrooms for New Park Project
BUENA PARK — The new Buena Park city park will not have the traditional brick restrooms as the result of last night's city council meeting.
The park being developed south of the Edison Company's right of way northerly off La Palma and east of Knott Ave., finally got some relief on the restroom situation when the city manager, Phil Storm was directed to call for bids or the project.
Councilman Fred Harber, seeing the possibility of the park's being finished before the summer season when children will be in need of a playground area, came up with some suggestions for hurrying the restrooms along.
Bids will be asked for on a subcontract basis for labor to construct the facilities for which the city has or will purchase the materials.
At any rate, the restrooms will have "wall hung" plumbing facilities to facilitate cleaning and will be constructed on a subcontract basis to hurry the project along.
In other matters, a public hearing on an alley abandonment between Burnham St., and Rostrata will be held on the 28th of April to determine whether the property owners in question are duping the city by asking for abandonment of an old County Flood Control District easement which has been used as a lovers' lane in the past, creating a hazard to neighboring residents.
The leaders of the movement have been asking the council recently to return the property to them so the old easement can be closed off to foot traffic and auto traffic which at night creates some special problems.
The fact that house entrys have been made by unauthorized per-sons has the council wondering whether the property owners will really close off the alley or not.
The property was originally set aside by the county in the bygone days for a flood control easement which was never used as such.
The council must be assured that the residents will fence off the areas in question along the so-called alley and reduce the easement to a figment of the imagination with such things as block walls before they will act.
It takes this act of the council to establish true purpose and thereby a public hearing was called before the thing can come off according to Hoyle.
Mayor Murphy said that the public hearing was held for the purpose of listening to both sides of the question on the alley.
It is doubtful whether under-age drinkers will appear at the hearing to battle the closing of the after hours carousing area.

Seek Ford Funds
Payment for most of the construction of this first unit, it was pointed out, can be made from a balance which will remain in the Building Bond fund after completion of the district's current building program.
The resolution for funds was passed to be included in a formal application to the Fund for the Advancement of Education of the Ford Foundation for monies to be provided to this district on a matching basis. These funds will be given in connection with this district's participation in the National Program for the Use of Television in the Public Schools during the coming year.
This action came on the heels of an announcement today that the Ford Foundation's appropriation to continue its national program in Public School Television will be $1,097,000.
The new appropriation will continue assistance for the National Program already in effect through the school year 1960-61, and will expand it to include, among other school systems, that of the City of Anaheim. It is expected that more than 750 schools will be participating in the program in the next year.

West opened the ace of clubs, and East naturally discarded the ace of diamonds. West continued with the queen of clubs to dummy's king, and East naturally discarded the ace of spades.
This simple defense wrecked South's normal contract of three notrump.
West Had Entries
Now West had entries to the rest of his established club suit. If South tried to develop spades, West would get in with the jack of spades; and if South tried to go after the diamonds, West would gain the lead with the queen of diamonds. Either way he would take enough club tricks to defeat the contract.
Are you wondering why it was "natural" for East to throw away his two aces? Or why it was "normal" for South to bid three notrump without a single club in his hand?
Just read the first sentence again and then look at today's date.
Daily Question
As dealer, you hold: Spades A 10 5 Hearts J 10 8 7 6 4 3 2 Diamonds A 10 Clubs None. What do you say?
Answer: Bid one heart. Don't dream of making a shutout bid with two aces and a void suit. Aces and shutouts don't mix.
