COACHED BY BOB HAGER
Anaheim Track Squad Shot
By LEONARD R. HANDEL
Anaheim Colonist track coach, Bob Hager, is currently one of the happiest men in Orange County athletics.
The local mentor has watched his cinder squad topple two-straight Sunset League foes and in the process of so doing has issued a warning to all opponents that they will be extremely dangerous in each and every meet.
However, while Bob is convinced that the Colonists have a good chance of turning in one of their better seasons in many recent campaigns he is equally certain that some of the more rugged competition is yet to come.
Tribe Next
For instance, a week from today Hager's men will be meeting Fullerton's Indians on the Tribe's reservation and it goes without saying that this could be the toughest one of the season.
If pre-season selections Coach Jim Bush's charges were the choice of many to "ice" many honors and it is for certain that they would like to add Anaheim to their list of victories.
Anaheim, in their first two Circuit clashes, have shown an amazing power in both the track and field events, which is something for which Bob is extremely grateful.
It has been the case of many good teams that they will have ton strength in one or the other — but to find a crew which excels in both is a rougher task than uncovering a short Great Dane.
For instance, in the Loop lifter with Newport Harbor, Anaheim cruised to victory by virtue of the Relay, an event in which the locals appear to have a tremendous power.
Capturing top honors in that de-
Vollom, who is one of Colonyville's best athletic products, snared a place position against Newport and took win money against Garden Grove.
While he "slipped" to a second against the Tars in the 120-highs, he has been impossible to stop in the high jump.
The popular Colonist senior has already reached a height of six-foot-two-inches, which at this time is the best record turned in throughout Orange County, a location where track records come and go with almost impossible ease.
Denis showed his ability on the wind-swept Tar track when he was able to clear five-feet-10-inches.
While this was not nearly his best effort it was more than enough to down his nearest opponent.
Smith Sharp
Another lad who figures to give Anaheim some additional strength in the future as he has in the past, is Smith, who has just about declared a monoply in the 100 and 220.
Bill has something pretty good going for him, too, as he has snared victories in both events during the Newport and Garden Grove meets.
Along with McPhillips, who appears to be in perfect form, the pair has afforded Colonist track fans any number of major sports thrills during the present campaign.
Bill, who covered the 100 distance in 9.9 during that meet with Newport, is rated as one of the best in Orange County circles and a real threat to the peace and security of area cinder path athletes.
Top Efforts
Woodward, who also specializes
It has been the case of many good teams that they will have top strength in one or the other but to find a crew which excels in both is a rougher task than uncovering a short Great Dane.
For instance, in the Loop lifter with Newport Harbor, Anaheim cruised to victory by virtue of the Relay, an event in which the locals appear to have a tremendous power.
Capturing top honors in that department were Bob McPhillips, Gerry Woodward, Gary Shepard and Bill Smith.
They toured the distance in the time of 1:31.0, which was pretty good considering they were fighting a head wind that would have done justice to the Lockheed wind tunnel.
However, while the meet was decided by the Relay, it must also be noted that other Colonists had to turn in top performances to spark the event.
Vollem Sharp
One lad who deserves a great deal of credit is Denis Vollom, who has developed into a major double threat man.
Brother Denis has been winning first place finishes not only in the high-jump, an event in which is ridden as one of the best in the County, but in the 120-high hurdles as well.

More Than Share
While the Colonist track department has been doing more than their share of point making during the present season it is for certain that the field lads have also been doing a brilliant job.
Thanks to the efforts of such men as Dan Shepard, Mickey Castricone, Gary Dow and Walt Farney, this group has also been showing fine form.
Shepard, for instance, has been grabbing pole vault decisions in great numbers, while Castricone has been looking very good in the broad jump.
Mickey, who has shown top improvement since the start of the present race, has grabbed place positions in the last pole Sunset meets and is tabbed strong addition to Hager's at Farney, in the shotput moment, has been reaching goodance and, like Castricone, pected to improve before thepletion of 1959 action.
Dow, Too
Dow has been second to Sk on many occasions and is she signs of marked improvement each meet.
While the Colonist track appears to be extremely though, those close to the are firm in their belief that more improvement must be seen.
Following the Fullerton for instance, the Colony will the Chaffey Invitational and lock horns with Huntington It appears that Anaheim fans are in for some lively during the next few weeks which they are extremely play What's more so is Hager, doing a brilliant job with his Bob has been assisted this son by Dale Hughes, and Donnelly.
It just might be that they have real strong power on their hand Which is a good deal for a cerned.

MICKEY LEAPS — Anaheim’s Mickey Castri-cone takes to the air during recent Sunset League track meet. He is seen as he participates in broadjump event, the Colonist athlete’s specialty. Coach Bob Hager’s Colonists have been turning in some of the best marks in Orange County which is one reason for them having defeated both Newport Harbor and Garden Grove while not suffering a single Loop setback.

LOS ALAMITOS — Two more promising 3-year-olds, Kemper Chafin’s Missle Bar and L. V. Casey and F. R. Beckham’s Fame Goldquest—today were added to the list of eligibles for the $15,000 added Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Derby at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Both were made supplementary nominees for the April 25 contest when their owners posted a $1,000 penalty per each plus the regular nomination and sustaining fees.
They were the second and third horses to be made eligible via the penalty payment route, Ventura Moreno’s Lip Request having been added to the Derby field the same way earlier in the week.
Still another swiftie, Donald K. Brokaw’s Pana Bar, also is expected to be made eligible before the deadline for supplementary nominations—passes. Pana Bar originally was eligible for the 440-yard classic, but a mixup in the mails on a sustaining payment cost him his eligibility.
Missle Bar, winner of the Mt. Shasta Purse at Bay Meadows in his last start, was one of the top 2-year-olds of 1958 when he won nine of his 13 starts including the Arizona Quarter Horse Futurity.
Fame Goldquest won only two of 16 starts last year, but has a two-for three record this year, including a conquest over Missle Bar in the Millbrae Purse at Bay Meadows.
The 23-day Los Alamitos season gets under way one week from Friday with the $2000 Inaugural Stakes for 3-year-olds at 350 yards the Jop attraction. The Inaugural is a tuneup for the Derby Trial Stakes eight days later and as such is expected to bring out the best of the sophomore division. Missle Bar and Fame Goldquest included.

Twere back in 1916 that interest in women's bowling became so great that the Women's International Bowling Congress (W.I.B.C.) was formed. Perhaps the greatest woman kegler of all time was Mrs. Floreta McCutcheson of Colorado, who, or whom, or sumthin', compiled a record that included ten 300 games, nine 299 tilts, and 66 other games over 278, and a fantastic ten-year average of 201.
Coming back to the present, the highest fem trundler in all the land, average wise this season, is Wilma Guillory, carrying a 197 average. Wilma can be seen in action this Sunday night on KHJ-TV, channel 9 at 10:45 p.m. In a match with Bobbie Shaler, Yers troly appears each week as something or other on the show, tune in, won't you? It's the T.V. Bowling Derby program, and other participants could include a neighbor or friend, or even YOU! Drop down to Linbrook...you can qualify for your T.V. debut.
At Linbrook, we take pride in our reputation, that of being Anaheim's friendliest bowling center. Bowlers naturally like the plush surroundings new centers give them, but more important is the friends and "atmosphere" that bowling provides. We have 40 lanes, but split up, 20 on either side of the building, getting away from the "mile long" look of lane after lane stretched out in a row, 50 and 60 long. It also gives our desk personnel and waitresses the chance to get better acquainted with the bowlers. This is what we strive to do, make friends. You get to know so many of our regulars...the people like Chuck and Jeri Young, Bill George, Sam Sechi and his family, Jack and Ted of State Farm Insurance, Chet and Em Wander, Buck Bakonis and George Rome, and the literally hundreds who come in to bowl or eat, or maybe just to say 'hi.' Come on by. I'm sure you'll agree. Linbrook is just a little bit nicer.
