TV in Review By William Ewald United Press International NEW YORK (UPI)—Teen age girls are the customers who make or break pop records right now and I suppose that's the principal reason for the low state of the music business. They buy the singles and if you look at the chart of spring hits you'll find names like Frankie Franklin Avalon Brook Benton The Fleetwoods The Coasters and Dodie Stevens heading the lists—most of them names unfamiliar to the post-teen set. Two of the current culture heroes of the ponytail set are Jimmie Rodgers and Connie Francis and Tuesday night they were bunched together for a new NBC-TV series The Jimmie Rodgers Show. I can only assume that the infant of Rodgers' cigarette sponsor is package a show that will appeal to teenagers and thus further the cause of smoking among the kids. This may sound a trifle fortified but consider one other recent straw in the wind: Another giggle firm has signed teen-age Mol Dick Clark for a fall ABC TV panel show and there would seem to be indictments here of the beginnings of an underground drive to nicotinize our citizens early. As for the Rodgers show it signals TV's first step back toward radio. Visually it is a two-by-four cheapie and unimaginative. Musically it is standard pop—which means slight. Tuesday night there was only one tune — "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair" which had any glimmer Hanna Hits Back At Oath Charges SACRAMENTO — Assemblyman Richard T. Hanna (D) of Garde Grove, challenged the Republican leaders in Orange County throughout the state "to face honestly and without distortion the real issues behind the multitudinous requirements for loyalty oath required for tax exemptions, money transactions between the citizen and the state. "The fact of the matter is that the American people were stamped into enactment of a batch of meaningless loyalty oaths by unprincipled self-seeking politicians during the years following World War II," Hanna said. "The courts recently have been knocking these phony oaths off with monotonous regularity. And when I say such oaths are meaningless, I mean just that. This is supported by the fact that, to my knowledge, not a single person has been convicted of perjury in the violation of any one of them since they were initially enacted." Hanna said that "there is nothing peculiarly 'American' about these oaths. He said that a Los Angeles newspaper carried a story out of East Berlin which stated that every member of that city's Volunteer Fire Brigade was required to pledge his loyalty to the Communist regime. "We all recognize that denial of individual liberties is inherent in Communism," Hanna said. "Yet my Republican critics, who actually are trying to make a hypocracy out of loyalty, choose to criticize me for refusing to go along with a standard practice of Communism." "I think it is high time that all New Musical Instrument The Plectronic Piano ATLANTA (UPI) — An Atlantic man has crossed a small plot with a singing guitar—and coo-up with a "plectronic piano." William B. Taylor is the inventor of this unique instrument that looks like a miniature baby grand but sounds like an electric guitar. Taylor's plectronic piano played just like a regular piano. The big difference is that while the key is depressed, the strings are plucked instead of hammered. A small metal evicter at the base of each key plucks the strings at the key is struck. Taylor's first moel used pla strings, but the wire was too heavy, giving the instrument much overtone. Guitar string was used in his present model electronic system is built in volume. The inventor cut and fashioned his own wooden keys and covered them with ivory. The instrument is housed in a delicate, highly polished birch case. Taylor, a commercial artist says he got the idea for the pli electronic back in 1926 when he wrestling a guitar with a Dixie As for the Rodgers show it signals TV's first step back toward radio. Visually it is a two-by-four cheapie and unimaginative. Musically it is standard pop—which means slight. Tuesday night there was only one tune — "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair" — which had any glimmer and it was slicked to make it commercially palatable. Rodgers himself is an amiable young man — on TV everyone is an amiable young man who isn't an amiable young lady — with an average voice and a painful desire to please. Tuesday night he spent a good whomp of time posed in front of a backdrop of phony books a rather subtle method of endearing him to the simple-minded: Here obviously was an owner of books (wealth) who had no intention of ever actually reading them (a regular guy). The show was its own best fan. Rodgers honey-tongued compliments after each of his performers finished a chore — "Really great Connie"... "Boy they sure played that nice." And when Rodgers chored announcer Jack bescouille did the honors — "Ah great Jimmy wonderful"... "Ah great Jimmy and that Kirby Stone Four is the very and." I would say all of these assessments were somewhat less than accurate. Short Shots: Tuesday night's CBS-TV Arthur Godfrey show from Hawaii was a pleasant if undistinguished exercise. Alfred Ryder turned in an awfully good performance as the lead in Tuesday night's ABC-TV Alcoa Presents and the show was pretty gripping too. The Channel Swim, CBS-TV is bidding for "Davy Jones Locker" Bil and Cora Baird puppet show currently on Broadway—it's wanted for a one hour special next Bill. Peggy Cass of the NBC-TV Jack Paar show will star in "Bells Are Ringing" at the Dallas Summer Theater this summer. MGM and Talent Associates the independent firm which turns out Armstrong Circle Theatre and DuPont Show of the Month hope to coproduce a series of nine specials for next season for TV—Some of the MGM properties available are Mrs. Miniver, Waterloo Bridge, Ninotchka, and Woman of the Year. "We all recognize that denial of individual liberties is inherent in Communism." Hanna said. "Yet my Republican critics, who actually are trying to make a hypocracy out of loyalty, choose to criticize me for refusing to go along with a standard practice of Communism." "I think it is high time that all liberty loving Americans of whatever political faith join together in bringing reason back to the throne in this matter. We need to return, for the sakes of ourselves and our children, a truly meaningful and significant expression of loyalty. I certainly favor an oath of loyalty that is close to the touch stone of a life of service to fellow citizens, the state and to the nation." Hanna charged that "oaths required to be taken with every mundane money transaction between the citizen and the state, degenerate into tainted acts." "I would like to remind the political opportunistic in the ranks of the opposition that only last Feb. 18, the Assembly voted unanimously for passage of a Republican-sponsored bill to restore the tax exemptions of nonprofit organizations which had neglected to file their loyalty oaths since 1962, and struck out the requirement for loyalty oaths contained within that provision. This bill was voted for by all Republican leaders of the Assembly. The real issue was the same, and I hereby invite my Republican critics to castigate those members of their party who voted for Coolidge's bill, A. B. 29. If they do not choose to do so, I believe we have evidence enough that their criticism of me is born of pure political expediency and an attempt to delude the voters with a phony issue." "It is my hope that Republicans will in the future avoid attempting to make political hay through deliberate or uninformed distortion of such an important issue. I hope that they will come to realize that it is the quality of loyalty that counts, and not the number of oaths taken." Calif. National Guard Slated For Increase SACRAMENTO (UPI) — California's National Guard has been authorized to increase by 50 percent its enlistment of young men without prior service during the Communist regime. And right here, a local vet hides tremendous progress with this same work, and has successfully performed this surgery. In giving your dog obedient training, DO give the dog constant encouragement — DON'T evoke a correction when the dog has done the right thing. The population is certainly increasing — there were 10,000 dogs registered with the American Kennel Club in 1958 than in 1957.
