'GONDOLIERS' STARS—This happy pair, Catherine Ann Roach and Earle Abbott as Casilda and Luiz, will frolic through Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, "The Gondoliers," at the Redlands Bowl in the final performance of the spectacular production tonight. Catherine Ann Roach was understudy to Metropolitan Star, Anne Jamison, last summer when Miss Jamison played Yum-Yum in the Redlands Bowl production of "The Mikado." Earle Abbott was seen in the role of Nanki-Poo. "The Gondollers" is being conducted by Edward C. Tritt with Joyce Riemer directing the ballet. The Friday performance is open to the public, admission free. Postpone Charity Pro The “Noble Experiment” charity world premiere of this year and a half in the making is postponed until a later Aug. at the Lido Theater. Start Queen of Trade Contest A contest, to determine the most popular working woman, is set for Saturday, Sept. 17, at the American Legion Hall, Santa Ana, North Birch St. One girl may be chosen from each place of business, she may be single or married-no age limit. First award will be $200 or trip to Mexico City; second, will be $100 bond; third, $50 bond fourth, $25 bond. There will trophies for the winners, a plaque for the manager and a trophy for the high contestant in each community. Funds raised by the sale of the kets will be used by Orange County 40 et 8 voiture 527, American Legion, to further their child welfare, Nurses training and Veteran Hospital work. Mr. and Mrs. Kent Bramwell of North Fairview welcomed their infant daughter on July 23. The little girl weighed five pounds and 13 ounces at birth. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Sewell of 10621 Dixie Dr. at St. Joseph hospital on July 25. Weight of the baby was seven pounds and nine ounces. Set Human Relations Extension Workshop Because dietitians are almost always members of a staff team and of a necessity have many supervisory responsibilities, University of California Extension this summer will inaugurate a workshop on Improving Human Relations. PILGRIMAGE PLAY — Robert Wilson portrays the role Jesus of Nazareth in the 25th Anniversary production "The Pilgrimage Play" to be presented at the Pilgrimage Theatre in Hollywood starting August 8 for four weeks. A cast of 80 is featured in this thrilling outdoor drama which has played to an attendance of over a million since 1920. (Located across from Hollywood Bowl.) Sho pottery and sculpture at a Postpone Date of Charity Premiere The "Noble Experiment" group announces that the gala world premiere of their unique film production, a half in the making on location in Orange county, is postponed until a later date. It was originally set for at the Lido Theater, Newport Beach. The title of the film, recently announced, is: "The Big Drink." It is copyrighted as "the first motion picture you can taste." Postponement of the premiere date is due to delays in contracts with production companies in Los Angeles. These companies have a part in the design and installation of special facilities at the theater which will enable the audiences to "taste as well as see and hear" the full length color comedy motion picture. Certain "tastes" in the film will be left out, according to producer Tom Graeff. Phyllis 'Yum Yum' Yarwood, a home town girl, who made good as Queen of Orange County, Maid of California, Princess of Disneyland is the vivacious star in the play. Graeff states that with the special facilities in the theater, Miss Yarwood's scenes will be particularly interesting. Graeff says that the technological problems in "The Big Drink" have been immense and have caused innumerable delays during the past year because the group was blazing a new trail. Wilcox has been named 'League Carriage.' Family Service Association Head Is Mrs. John G. Wilcox Moon Is Blue Opens Monday At Playbox The charming and entertaining young Broadway comedy, "The Moon Is Blue" is the next offering of the Tustin Playbox, and will run from Aug. 2, to Aug. 13. "The Moon Is Blue" stars Cathy Browne as the delightfully naive ingenuue, Miss Browne has just completed the role of "Olivia" in the suspense play, "Night Must Fall." Playing opposite Miss Browne, in the role of the young architect, is Philin Moore, who has had prominent roles in "Private Lives" and "The Milky Way," so far this season. The role of the Irish cop will be taken by Stanley Mann, who will long be remembered for his hilarious interpretation of the meek milkman in "The Milky Way." William Secrist, who appeared as the Inspector in "Night Must Fall," will portray the charming middle-aged rowe. "Line Up The Girls," a sparkling musical comedy revue, which will have its world premiere at the Tustin Playbox, is expected to be the highlight of the 1955 Playbox season. The names of the cast will be announced later. There will be a number of local singers and dancers featured in the revue. The musical melodrama, "Ber- Coast chapter to be established was at San Diego. SANTA ANA (OGNS) — Mrs John G. Wilcox has been named by Family Service Association of Orange County to head of local auxiliary unit, it was announced today by Mrs. Frank Baeskens of Orange, public relations chairman for Family Service. The announcement followed a conference between Mrs. Wilcox, Mrs. Baeskens and Mrs. Edward M. Hall, Santa Ana, president of Family Service Association. Mrs. Wilcox said she would shortly call a series of meetings to lay the foundation for forming the local auxiliary. This is the first move in a plan to form local auxiliary units in the various communities of Orange County, as approved by directors of Family Service Association at their last meeting. The local units, under local leadership, will be formed to assist with the county-wide program of providing professional family counselling service. Family Service Association expects to employ trained social service workers to deal with individual and family problems of those needing help, Mrs. Ken explained. Businessmen and inists, she said, have been to support the program, of the valuable service them with respect to coun employes on personal and problems. One-Man Art Exhibit Slated at Dorothy and Wade’s Restaurant The Dorothy-Wade restaurant exhibit for August is pastels, and oils by Evelyn Hamilton Keith, (Mrs. Keith) of Anaheim. This oneman showing will open in 1911 and will feature landscapes which Mrs. Keith has lived during her travels with her family in their trailer homes. Containing a small studio at the rear of her home at West Broadway, Mrs. Keith also teaches privately and given instruction in all art mediums under the Ana-Recreation Department. Mrs. Keith considers herself a native citizen, having lived in Anaheim since her husband took a teaching position at the Anaheim high school in 1939. She has been active in elementary, Junior High and High School at Ebell Club of Anaheim, and is a member of Orange associations. Her formal training was received at the Maryland Institute of Art and has since studied with Southern Californians. Some of the local juried shows in which she won awards are Orange County Fair, La Habra Art Association, Orange County Association. She has hung paint- at the Newport Harbor Annual Juried show. Mrs. Keith works with enamel on copper and has won prizes in that field. She plans to further her work in clay and sculpture at a future date. Library Chats By MARTHA METTLER The Public Library will be closed for two weeks during August. This will allow the staff to take annual vacations and time for renovation work inside the library. Closing dates will be Aug. 7 through Aug. 21. "Be sure to get a plentiful supply of books for the two weeks," say local librarians, who point out that the time limit will be extended over the vacation period and thus avoid "overdue" check. NEW BOOKS "Health Finder", ed. by J. I. Rodale, is an encyclopedia of health information from the preventive point-of-view. All of this material has appeared in the pages of "Prevention Magazine". J. I. Rodale is founder, president and editor-in-chief of Rodale Books. He is also publisher and editor of the magazines "Prevention" and "Organic Gardening and Farming". In this capacity he has steadily gained supporters, converts and friends for he organic and preventive methods from people in all walks of life. The library has just received three handbooks by Lewis W. Clark that will aid both auto tourists and back country hikers in the Yosemite National Park. "Trail Guide to The High Sierra Camp Areas" covers the trail system of the park, comprising of nearly 1,000 miles of main and lateral trails. The topographical face of the park is made up of three major watersheds. Its melting snows and streams drain into the Two-lumne River on the noth- Meeting "Christmas in July" was the theme carried out in decoration at the general luncheon meeting of the White Temple Methodist Church Women's Society of Christian Service hostess by the Gauer circle. Many gifts were brought for the Mary Lee Home in Seward, Alaska, with Mrs. Charles Cornbloom, supply chairman, in charge of this annual gift event. Members of the society with birthdays in July were honored at the birthday table, with the general Meeting was presided over by Mrs. Arthur Roquet, president. Members were interested in the very informative report given by Mrs. Frank Butterworth on the activities at the Conference in Redlands of the Women's National Society. Mrs. Albert Cranston, vice president, in charge of worship and program, introduced Mrs. C. I. Andrews, who gave appropriate inspirational worship. The four speakers, the Misses Hazel Ann Burnett, Kay Schmitt, and Sue Graves and Ron Larson, held the undivided attention of the group with their individual talks on their many activities at work-camp. The above students and two Hawaiian youths were in attendance at the work camp for a week in Chinle, Ariz., at the Navajo Indian Reservation. The week previous to the general meeting, the Circles met together in various patios, homes and parks with their new chairman. Begonia Society Slated The 23rd annual convention and flower show of the American Begonia Society will be Aug. 12, 13 and 14 at Redondo Beach Union High school, corner of Pacific Coast Highway 101 and Diamond St., Redondo Beach. To attend many of the events scheduled. Flower show exhibits and entries must be completed by 11 a.m. on Aug. 12. Classifications for entry will be individual, commercial, branch, arrangements, other societies, etc. Featured will be all types of begonias: rexes, rhizomatous, fibrous rooted and tuberous. Newcomers to begonia culture will be amazed at the variety in size, leaf coloring and flowering habit of the different types in the genus. They will also have the opportunity to learn from practiced amateurs and professionals how-to-do-it themselves. The theme of the show will be rustic and all show personnel will be in costume—blue denims, jeans, ginghams, etc. An interesting and educational exhibit will be that of the Nomenclature committee which strives to standardize the naming of begonias, old and new, and has succeeded to such an extent that the society has become an authority on nomenclature.
