Proprietor of Large Chicago Hotel Runs Hostelry With Personal Touch By ALFRED LEECH United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO — Mrs. Margery Bellows is one of the world's busiest housekeepers. Right now she's redecorating 1000 rooms. Mrs. Bellows, a buxom, brunette mother of two children, is proprietor of the Shoreland, Chicago's fourth largest hotel. She runs it with a vigorous personal touch, overseeing details most executives would consider beneath them. She supervises all purchases and maintenance, runs the huge laundry in her basement, handles sales promotion and greets most guests personally. "The personat touch is sadly lacking in most hotels," she said. "But when you try to provide it, you find yourself putting in 12 to 14 hours a day." She and her husband bought the lakefront hotel about a year ago and found it needed a major face lifting. But instead of calling in an interior decorator, Mrs. Bellows decided to put her own deft color sense to work. Personal Attic She's made the top floor of the 13-story hotel her personal attic, where she has stored lamps and other odds and ends, and bolt after bolt of material for bedspreads and draperies. She took a key from a big ring and unlocked the double-barred door to a virtual treasure house of yard goods. "Most of this I picked up for a song," she said, waving in the direction of a long table piled with bolts of rich material. From another table she picked up a lamp. "This would cost you $100 retail," she said. "I got it for $26. There was a small lamp company going out of business and I bought them out." Most of the yard goods she bought from large houses that specialize in supplying interior decorators. "I watch for their sales and buy up odds and ends," she said. "Here's some material you'd pay $13 a yard for. I got it for $3 a yard." Busy Workers Next stop in the guided tour was the upholstery shop, where two men were refurbishing chairs with some of the bargain material. "I've got a pretty good idea just where I'm going to put each chair," Mrs. Bellows said. "You've got to plan each room so the furniture will fit the color scheme." She's already redone the grand ballroom, several meeting rooms and the restaurant. The ballroom is a good illustration of her conception of service. "I'd planned to paint it blue white," she said. "But there a big wedding scheduled, and bride wanted pink, to match color scheme." "We didn't want a pink ballr but we compromised and mad peach and white." FREE!
