DISNEYLAND'S CHARTER MEMBER—Every day, except one from the public's grand opening day, July 18. Frank M. Schmidt, 78, retired college vice president from Berkeley, has visited Disneyland, from dawn to dusk. An agile man with a gentle smile and a sudden wit, Schmidt has made his daily trips to and from Disney's park on foot from his hotel in downtown Anaheim. He claims he walks about nine miles a day. What does he do every day at Disneyland? Not too much, actually. Relaxes, talks to people telling them how wonderful the place is, takes in an occasional ride or exhibit and relaxes. (Bulletin photo)

New to Disneyland's publicity department is a 78-year-old man from Berkeley, Calif., Frank M. Schmidt. He receives no cash payment for his job of promoting the Disney playground and it is doubtful if anyone in Disneyland personnel knows he even exists. Newly released "Frank" as he is becoming known is doing an excellent job.

New to Disneyland's publicity department is a 78-year-old man from Berkeley, Calif., Frank M. Schmidt. He receives no cash payment for his job of promoting the Disney playground and it is doubtful if anyone in Disneyland personnel knows he even exists. Nevertheless, "Frank" as he is becoming known is doing an excellent job.
Each day since the Disneyland opening (excepting last Tuesday when he went to Knott's Berry Farm) Frank has been on hand when the park opens and there almost until closing time. Conservatively speaking, he has sent about 300 papers, pamphlets and other Disneyland information booklets to friends and relatives during the ten days he has spent here. He stated almost sadly that in three days his vacation, spent almost entirely on the Disneyland grounds, will terminate and that he will terminate, but, "I'm coming back shortly after Christmas when more things are open," he said.
Frank is proud of the fact that he walks between six and nine miles a day, says that, of course, most of it is seeing the endless number of things at Disneyland. He walks from his downtown hotel to Disneyland each day, too. He has rarely missed a band concert at the Disneyland band stand just east of the Sleeping Beauty Castle.
But his ogle is not that of a person who has never been around and is as a result, astonished. Frank is the retired vice president of the old Berkeley Business College. He has traveled all over the United States, and, he said, has given numerous lectures, using movies and illustrated slides, about American national parks. "But this is really a monument to American ingenuity," he emphasized.
A man with a ready smile and a remarkably sudden wit, Frank showed some seriousness, however when he mused quietly, "I can't see how anybody can walk out of here after only a few hours and say, 'well, I was rather disappointed.'"
A clerk at the Valencia hotel commented today that he had received a letter from a Frank M. Schmidt about a month ago to reserve a room for 12 days, for the explicit purpose of seeing Disneyland. The clerk suggested, "I don't think anyone has seen it more, not even Disney."
Frank looked at the clock Santa Fe-Disneyland statistic about 4 p.m. yesterday and said, "Guess I'll go on the train couple hours, haven't been yet. Maybe I'll drop over at that trip to the moon tomorrow."

D Wants Military Aid in Event of H-Attack
By DEAN W. DITTMER
WASHINGTON — Civil Defense Administrator Val Petersaid today he would like to have military help in event of H-attack.
In an interview on the decision of several other nations to
civil defense responsibility over to the military, Peterson
expressed a desire that:
1. All draftees be trained in civil defense work.
2. Military reservists serve in civil defense. Time spent in civil
defense would count toward retirement from the reserves.
3. National Guard ground, elements be kept under state jurisdiction for "a few weeks" after an emergency to help with civil defense operations. After the immediate emergency they would be transferred to combat duty.
4. Some units of the regular military establishment be made available for civil defense work.
If atomic or hydrogen attack wipes out most of a city's population, Peterson said, it also will wipe out most of the civil defense workers.
This would make it necessary to move in trained fire fighters and first aid and rescue teams as soon as possible.
"Assuming there is a nuclear attack on the United States," he said, "we must use all the tools at hand to meet the situation."
Peterson said he and his aides are carefully studying programs in Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and Denmark where the military is being given civil defense responsibilities.
The Scandinavian countries conscript youths into their civil defense organizations.
Great Britain is creating 48 battalions of 600 men each for a "Mobile Defense Corps." trained

Local Woman Reports Attack by Motorist
ORANGE (OCNS)—An Anaheim woman, looking for a place to buy gasoline in the plaza early this morning, was picked up by a man about 30 years old, taken into the hills and attacked, she told Orange police.
The attacker also took her bill-fold. The victim couldn't remember where the attack had occurred, but jotted down the first five digits of the license plate on the man's car.
Orange police checked out the five numbers and found the car was registered to Holman Olsen Haltstrum of Reseda.

Former Paratrooper Now a Woman Reveals Marriage to Make-Up Man
SACRAMENTO — The marriage of a former paratrooper, who claimed he had became a woman through sex surgery, to a movie make-up man was disclosed today.
The bride was Tamara Edel Rees, 31, who, as a man, fathered two children and made four jumps behind enemy lines as a paratrooper in World War II.
Tamara claimed that an operation in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1954 changed her into a woman.
The bride, now making a series of "psychological" lectures in California, confirmed the marriage and identified the bridegroom as J. E. Courtland, III. The marriage took place Saturday in Reno.
"It was not a case of love at first sight," the former twice-decorated GI explained.
Courtland, who is accompanying his bride on the lecture tour as business manager, was not immediately available for comment.
A former roommate of the bride-groom's in Los Angeles identified him as a make-up man and hair stylist who until three weeks ago had worked for 20th Century Fox in Hollywood. The roommate said Courtland was a naval reservist and was expected to be recalled to active duty in September. He said Clurtland was a member of a socially prominent family in Charlotte, N.C.
"My family has been told of the marriage and are very happy for me," Tamara said. "Jim's father is dead, and his mother doesn't know of the wedding yet."
Tamara said she met Courtland at a house party given by mutual friends in Los Angeles in January. She left her parents home here and moved to Los Angeles about 18 months ago, shortly after her sex transition, charging she had become the target of "malicious publicity."
In Los Angeles, Courtlands's former roommate, who asked that his identity be withheld, said he introduced the couple and was "quite surprised" to hear of their marriage.
The roommate, a student-worker at a beauty school, said he introduced Courtland to Tamara. He met her, he said, when she came to the school to get a permanent.
The marriage license was obtained in Reno. On the application Tamara stated she never had been married. Courtland identified himself as a widower.
Tamara, as Robert Rees, was married to a North Carolina girl from whom he was divorced in 1946. They had two children.
