ROD AND GUN Lowe Captures Santa Ana’s Prexy Tournament By WALLY TAFT George Lowe of Corona del Mar captured the Santa Ana Country Club Men’s President Cup tourney as George turned back Bob Forbes, Lido Isle, in the finals one up on the 19th hole. This is a good win for George who earlier this year went to the finals in the Cravens Cup tourney at San Gabriel Country Club with Hank Bickler. Bulletin — 7 Day as PGA Champ Baby-Sitting NORTHVILLE, Mich. UP—Doug Ford spent his first day as the PGA golf champion baby sitting with his three children today. He gave his wife the day off because she had watched them the seven days it took him to win the title with par-shattering golf over the Meadowbrook Country Club course. He climaxed his brilliant performance Tuesday when he turned back Cary Middlecoff, who was shooting for the only major U.S. golf title he never has won, 4 and 3. For Ford it meant a lot more than the first place money of $5,000. It was his first major tournament victory—his first triumph of any kind since he won the Fort Wayne Open more than a year ago. And it put his name down in PGA history. For he became the second player ever to win the title—which the pros cherish most—in his first try and the fourth medalist ever to go on to capture the crown. Tom Creavy won it in his first try back in 1931 and the only other medalists who kept their gains hot enough to go on to victory were Walter Hagen in 1926, Olin Dutra in 1982 and Byron Nelson in 1945. Ford closed out his match against Middlecoff on the 33rd hole with a par-putting him 39 under par for the 194 holes it took him to win the championship. Gets Victory Feeling Ford felt he had the match won when he went ahead for the first time on the 26th hole. "Once I got up, I started to go," he said. He birdied the 29th and 30th to go 3 up, lost the 31st with a bogey, but bounced back with another birdie to win the 32nd and then closed out the match with a par on the 33rd. All-City Track Meet Tonight The 4th All-City Track Meet is tonight featuring the marathon will start at 6:30 with the field events starting at that time and the running events starting at 7:00 p.m. Dick Reed defending champion for the first three years of the marathon has passed up the event this year to insure a new marathon champion. The meet will feature the finals of the juvenile league track meets held earlier in the month. Points earned from the track meet for each team goes toward the trophies to be awarded at the end of the summer. Boys between the ages of 5 and 18 will participate in the All-City Meet. Races will vary from the 50 Yard walk to the 100-yard dash and Marathon which is about 3½ miles. The marathoners will start at La Palma Park, go East on La Palma Street to Los Angeles St., South on Los Angeles to Broadway, East on Broadway to Santa Fe, North on Santa Fe to Center, West on Center-to-Lemon back out to La Palma Park. Del Mar Race Track Opening 'Cap Today Prexy Tourney ner Jack Rhodes, Santa Ana, with a combined net total of 132. The field has 18 holes more to play this week to determine the winner of this event. The Irvine Coast Country Club Ladies, Friday Match Play tourney in Class "A" was won by Mrs. Kay Lenihan, Laguna Beach and Mrs. Jane Ward, Newport Beach, as they were only one down to the ole master Mr. Par., Mrs. Betty Henderson, Lido Isle, placed second being four down to par. In Class "B" Mrs. Blanche Compton, Costa Mesa, took top honors being three down to par as Mrs. Ann Holstein, Lido Isle, finished second being six down to par. Three Shore-Cliff swingers tied for third being seven down to par, they were: Mrs. Katy Gardner, Mrs. Virginia Lyman and Mrs. Mozelle Young-blood. TEST ON STARS the crucial fly Tuesday night. Monday night Bill Hall broke a 3-3 tie with an 11th Inning sacrifice. However, the latest Hollywood victory stirred up a rhubarb. The Seals insisted Jack Lohrke left third for home before Roberts' fly was caught. Roger Bowman went the distance for Hollywood to gain his first win since June 22 and his fourth victory of the season against six losses. Gene Bearden suffered the defeat, his sixth against 13 victories. DEL Mar Race Track Opening 'Cap Today DEL MAR (UP)—Del Mar's 16th summer racing season opens today with a crowd of about 10,000 fans ejected at the seaside track for the $5,000 Inaugural Handicap. Middlecoff, the leading money winner of the year, said "It was a great victory for Doug and I'm proud of him." He revealed that he figured he was going to lose on the 77th hole of the morning round when he lost the hole despite a par five. My mind was so dull I couldn't think," the golfing dentist said. "I couldn't take advantage of my good drives and flubbed a lot of my second shots. I was exhausted. Maybe three or four years ago when I was younger I could have made it. This tournament takes a combination of luck and good golf. If you meet the right man early and get a little rest you're in good shape. It's the most gruelling grind in golf, without a doubt." Rainbows Overpowered By Fullerton Nine The Roaring Rainbows lost a heartbreaker to Fullerton last evening at Basque Park in Fullerton.
