Las Vegas Hotel Again Fires Cox LAS VEGAS — The management of the Dunes Hotel said today it fired comedian Wally Cox for the second time in less than two weeks because "he was miserable and had no more business appearing here than on the moon." Cox, television's Mr. Peepers, was fired last night for failing to "cut the mustard" on his second chance as the headliner act in the Dunes Arabian Room. A hotel spokesman said, "he couldn't cut it... No business." "My gosh," the shy, bespectacled comedian exclaimed when told of his second dismissal. When asked how he felt about it he replied meekly, "not so hot." Cox will be replaced by Mickey Rooney and Joey Foreman tonight. The comedian opened his four week $44,000 engagement at the Dunes July 13, but was fired after three performances for being a flop. The hotel filed a $250,000 damage suit against him for loss of business. The hotel gave Cox a "second chance," starting July 18 when he assured management he had prepared a completely new act. The hotel said attendance climbed briefly, but they dropped again. Cox played both shows at the hotel last night. Management reported he drew only about 100 persons at each performance. Cox has two weeks to go on his contract with the hotel, a $11,000 a week. It was not immediately known if the hotel plans to buy off the TV entertainer or leave it up to him to force payment.
