Betrothal of Edna Mae Roberts, Robert D. Bruce Told at Party
A surprise birthday party for her roommate from UCLA campus days afforded the opportunity for Miss Edna Mae Roberts, daughter of Mrs. Nathaniel Roberts of 410 West Vermont St. to tell the news of her engagement to Robert D. Bruce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Bruce of 307 North Janss St. The party honored Miss Martha Dickman of Westwood.
The news of the betrothal was revealed by names on coasters and napkins with the engagement cake cut at the same time the beautifully frosted birthday cake for Miss Dickman was served. A champagne toast was given to the good fortune of the bridal couple-elect.
Sometime in October was the tentative date set by the young couple for their wedding.
Miss Roberts is a graduate of St. Boniface grade school, Anaheim High school and UCLA and is a member of the Savanna School faculty.
Bruce, a graduate of St. Boniface parochial school, Loyola High school, completed his educational work at University of California at Berkeley and University of Southern California. He is presently employed in the engineering department at Douglas Aircraft.
Beach College Registration Dates Set
Long Beach State College officials, expecting a record-breaking enrollment for the fall semester, are urging new students to apply for admission as early as possible before the proposed date of registration, Friday, Sept. 16.
C. R. Bergland, admissions officer, said today that the college issues permits to register to qualified applicants in the order of receipt of complete records. In order to assure the processing of records before the date of registration, application and all official transcripts must be filed in the admissions office at least 30 days prior to registration. "Application forms may be secured by mail or in person from the admissions office," he said.
In addition to the regular admission procedures, all entering freshman students are required to take a college aptitude test and an English proficiency test. County Philharmonic Plays
In Irvine Bowl August 27
Outdoor music under the stars at the Irvine Bowl is the first event being scheduled by the Orange County Philharmonic Society for its 1955-66 season, according to Karen Margreta Bruning, executive director.
This first concert of the groups' new series will be held in Laguna Beach on Aug. 27, at 8:30 p.m. as one of the final events of the summer at Orange County's own outdoor bowl, after the close of Laguna's nationally-known Festival of the Arts. Admission will again be free.
The Society's orchestra will again be under the leadership of its permanent conductor, Frieda Belinfante. Miss Belinfante has recently been in Holland, where she has had conducting engagements and where she has visited her family. She returns to the Southland this week, however, in order to get rehearsals underway for the forthcoming performance.
Last year's concert at the Irvine Bowl was an outstanding success, and the bowl at that time was filled almost to capacity. It is anticipated that its fine acoustics and delightful setting will once again draw a large crowd of both natives and summer visitors.
