Census Taker’s Problem Is How Not To Count the Same Rabbit Twice By ED DE MAR United Press Staff Correspondent DES MOINES, Iowa — Pick up a handful of sand and count the grains as you let it fall. Turn on the lawn sprinkler and count the drops of water. If you come close to an accurate total, rush to Iowa. About 50 state conservation officers need you. They’re counting rabbits. For a census, It has a god purpose. The state keeps an inventory, it says, of all wildlife species and rabbits are a “natural resource.” It wants a count of what’s hopping around so it will have data to set the length of the open shooting season. There is a certain air of caution to the approach taken by E. B. Speaker, superintendent of the biology section of the Iowa Conservation Commission, on the statistical probabilities. “We won’t,” he says, “be able to put our finger on exactly just how many rabbits there are in the state at a given time.” That could be the understatement of the week, but he explains cottontails and jacks “don’t wait for seasons to have their young.” There are a few rules, and some scientific aids, for the outnumbered conservation officers. They have been instructed to drive over about 35 miles of country roads in their counties between sunrise and 6 a.m. through July 28 in their survey of the hopper population. They are supposed to tell the ages, yet. “In most cases,” read the instructions, it will be possible to tell young rabbits from old rabbits on the basis of size alone. “However, there will be some doubtful ones and in this case please classify them as age unknown.” Speaker said the survey will show the “trend as compared with other years.” But he admits other problems, like what’s to do with the same rabbit that bobs up to be counted on successive days, or hops blandly across a county line from one officer’s set of figures into another. However, science has offered some help. The officers will be equipped with “dew blocks.” They leave them outside overnight, and then compare them to a series of photographs showing various degrees of dew fall. Biologists have learned rabbits are more likely to be out in the open if the dew is heavy. If it is dry, they stay in the underbrush. Therefore, each officer’s count is adjusted for the “Stay in the underbush” factor. If the wind blows too much, or weather conditions are unusual, the officers take the day off, but merely so survey results will be more uniform. One more thing. Officers also have been asked to count the number of doves they see while taking the rabbit census. “If you cannot make an actual count, then estimate the number seen in large flocks and add them to the number counted,” GETTING SOME POINTS a hint on steering to with their fathers, part in connection with the with nine others, and (seated) Yvonne Shube Beach and Marjorie Bo OFFICE FURNITURE Since 1923 ALFERNANDEZ OFFICE EQUIPMENT Authorized Factory Agent Name Brands 1600 N.
