New Format Brings More Mail-Pull for Station
HOLLYWOOD — Paramount Television's Los Angeles station, KTLA, has changed the format of its popular musical-variety show, "Bandstand Revue," and is now distributing the weekly telecasts nationally.
The program is seen in 14 major cities throughout the U.S. from Los Angeles to Providence, end from as far north as Seattle and as far south as Miami. "Bandstand Revue" features the top 25 tunes in the country, as judged by several disk jockeys and national publications, with every tune being presented as a production number. Each week Klaus Landsberg (Vice President of Paramount Television Productions and General Manager of KTLA) surprises viewers with unusual trick camera shots. You're apt to see Leighton Noble floating in the Pacific ocean or singer Rush Adams trapped in a mine cave-in (both of which happened via TV photography on recent telecasts).
I was wondering about the public's reaction to the new format — particularly across-country. So I hosted "Bandstand Reviews" singing-bandleader, Leighton Noble, and his pretty vocalist, Anita Gordon, to a cup-of-tea. I wanted to find out how, or in what way, the public was receiving the show in their opinions.
Anita feels that the program is still too new to determine what they think, at the present time. Much of out-of-state mail hasn't been received by the stars because of the fact there was no location identified with the "Bandstand Revue" telecasts. Therefore mail was routed via the various city's local station—thus causing long delays in mail reception. (This has since been improved.) When I asked Leighton Noble to what he attributed the reason for the big jump in popularity between the 'old' "Bandstand Revue" and the 'new,' he replied, "I think we have a good thing in this present format,
Tom, for one reason. It easily what the people want. Week we present the most regular 25 tunes in the county Secondly, we not only have talented regular members in cast, (Leighton Anita, The Donald Sisters, Rush Ada The Mercer Brothers and Diamond), but we have the tion's recording artists as guild Some of these guests have included such people as the M Brothers, the Ink Spots, Cornell, Lucille Norman, A Jones, Dick Contino and many others. You can't go wrong if you have an evening's line like that, Tom." he conclude.
And with the clever provision numbers to go with star-studded line-up, I have agree with him.
