Wally Cox Makes Hit at Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Comedian Wally Cox made a big comeback last night at the swank Dunes Hotel where he recently was fired for laying the biggest entertainment egg since five-figure contracts were introduced at this gambling resort.
The bespectacled Mr. Peepers of television recouped from last week's flop with a new, revitalized act that drew a resounding ovation from the audience in the hotel's casino and put him back on the payroll under a new contract.
When the shy, grinning comic walked from the stage after the show the audience gave him a one-minute ovation, proving he had "cut the mustard" on his second chance. The audience also voted three-to-one in favor of his comeback on ballots provided by the hotel.
"We are all happy Wally went over so well," said Dunes entertainment chairman Alfred Gottesman. "He's a grand fellow.
The hotel announced yesterday it would give Cox a second chance in the headliner act to "see if he can cut the mustard" even though it had filed a $250,000 suit against the comedian's agents for loss of business, at Cox's first appearance here last week.
MORE $$ FOR STRIPS — In Hollywood these shapey strippers formed the League of Exotic Dancers, served an ultimatum that employers "must do something about a wage scale of $85 a week they get when they take 'em off. From left, "Champagne," Laurene Dare, Jenny Lee, Rusty Lane and Novita.

Judge to Rue-on Plea for Reversal Of Conviction of MacKenzie, Avas
SANTA ANA (OCNS)—Superior Court Judge Kenneth E. Morrison this afternoon took under submission motions to reverse a conviction against suspended district liquor chief H. E. MacKenzie and Santa Ana bar keeper George Avas.
Morrison will rule at 2 p.m. today on these moves projected by Defense Attorneys Otto Jacobs and Samuel Hurwitz, motion for a new judgment in favor of the defendants in spite of the guilty verdict returned by the jury; motion for arrest of judgment; and motion for a new trial.
The defendants were convicted of conspiracy and bribery in the engineering of on-sale general liquor licenses for two Orange Countians—Jack Kennedy of Costa Mesa and Ross Gray of Capistrano. Evidence showed the unlawful taking of $7500 from Kennedy and $8000 from Gray.
Jacobs and Hurwitz contended their clients constitutional rights had been violated by the obtaining of evidence unlawfully. They asserted the judge shouldn't have allowed tape recordings taken in secret by co-conspirator Mickey Jones to have been entered as evidence.
Charges against Mrs. Jones were dropped when she turned state's evidence. She told the court of making numerous liquor license payoff collections for MacKenzie.
If Morrison rules against the defendants, Jacobs and Hurwitz have indicated they will seek an appeal.

Balboa Treasure Hunters Outfitting Expedition to Seek Wrecked Ship
NEWPORT HARBOR, (OCNS) — A search for undersea treasure which may be worth $100,000 is being readied today by Hal M. Slemons, 100 South Bay Front, Balboa Island, Slemons, a civil and construction engineer, told OCNS he learned of the treasure by chance.
The ship reportedly carrying the specie was en route from Mexico to Los Angeles and San Francisco during the nineties. She was following a course three miles off shore but struck the beach or rocks in heavy fog.
This was related to Slemons recently when a passer-by stopped to chat with him on his front porch. He told Slemons about a painting of a model ship, replica of the one which sank.
He offered Slemons, a former Arcadia resident who has lived here five years, his treasure information free.
And now, with three other partners whose identities cannot be revealed, Slemons is outfitting a power cruiser, whose name also is secret, for diving operations apparently off the Southland. The party will search three to four nights a week when the search begins. More active operations will be held next fall, he said, when the waters are clearer.
He said he has a photostatic copy of a San Francisco newspaper clipping which tells of the ship's sinking in the 1890s. He also has permission of authorities for his hunt.
