CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
WHEN Christie answered his knock, he noted that she'd been crying, but that she looked peacefully. That might be a bad sign, or might not. He kept his tone ravely gentle and respectful. Maybe you don't want to see me, Christie, but I had to tell you howorry I was about your father."
"Thanks, Wayne." Her manner told no resentment for their last encounter, but no warmth, either.
"It it's not bein' too inquisitive," she persisted, "what are your plans now? Are you goin' to run the flash T alone? If there's anything I can do—"
"Thanks, Wayne," she repeated, but my plans take care of everything. I'm getting married."
He controlled his face carefully. You're a mighty loyal woman, Christie. I hope you'll never be sorry."
"I won't!" her chin came up with a snap. "And if you want to do something, you can tell anybody who asks you that Tim Larrabee had his facts mixed. That story about Kerry and Lita Dawson just ain't so!"
"You're sure o' that?"
"I'm sure!"
"Well, I wish you all the luck, Christie. So long."
The street was full of nesters.
that Rob had gone to Jared Toland's burying, and had told him to stay with Kerry till he got back.
"Fella gettin' outa a buckboard," Rusty reported. "Big, heavy-set fella with greyish hair. An'—he's wearin' a star!"
"Lacey Parran," Kerry supplied dully.
Heavy boots came up the stairs. Lacey's blocky figure filled the doorway, three more figures dim behind him in the shadow of the hall. His ruddy face was sad and uncomfortable, like an old blood-nound's. His eyes travelled over the figure in the bed, came to rest on the one by the window. "Your name Harry Baines?"
"Why, yes. Though folks mostly call me Rusty."
"I'm sorry, Kerry," the sheriff spoke heavily, "but I gotta take you both in."
"What—!" Roused at last, Kerry struggled up on an elbow. "Rusty didn't have anything to do with it—he wasn't even around when Larrabee was shot—"
"This isn't for Tim Larrabee," Lacey told him. "I found out you're wanted for a killin' in Dodge."
Kerry and Rusty looked dazedly at each other. It had never occurred to either of them that business would follow them this fisted, crossed to the bed—and then, with the quickness that was so astounding in one of his easy-moving habits, he lunged at the sheriff's thick middle.
The move almost caught Lacey off-guard, but not quite. His gun barrel chopped down on Rusty's skull, and the cowboy pitched forward across the bed.
"He sank for it." Lacey's tone was almost apologetic, and Kerry sensed he wasn't easy in what he was doing. Lacey threw a long shadow. "Don't you try anything, Kerry."
"What do you think I could try?" Kerry demanded bitterly. "I've got no gun, I'm weak as a cat—and Rob's not here. You knew that when you picked your time, didn't you?"
The sight of Rusty, lying limp across the bed, with blood trickling where the gunbutt had torn his skin, nad roused the heat he hadn't felt for himself. If Rusty had bought a hand in his troubles, he wouldn't be in this fix. He brought grief to everybody he touched—Rob, Christie, and now this loyal friend.
But—he clung to the thought as he was being carried down and laid in the buckboard—he and Rusty hadn't done anything. Surely nobody could prove any difference.

"You're sure o' that?"
"I'm sure!"
"Well, I wish you all the luck, Christie. So long."
The street was full of nesters. They were gathered together in little, angry, buzzing clumps, like swarming bees. It wasn't hard to spot the tall, bearded figure of Nate Cullen. Cameron touched his arm and drew him aside.
"Mr. Cullen, something happened to come into my hands that something oughta be done about, but I got personal reasons for not wanting to be mixed up in it. I'd sooner my name wasn't even mentioned. I figure you're the man to take care of it."
He held out the "wanted" notice. The old nester didn't look at it. He kept his fiery prophet's eyes searchingly on Cameron's face.
"Why come to me, Mr. Cameron? We ain't on the same side."
"Because I'm a cattleman?" Cameron smiled ruefully. "No reason cattlemen and farmers shouldn't be on the same side, if they both believe in law an order an fair dealin'. I do. You've got the name of a man that does, too. You're respected sound here. That's why I figured you for the man to take charge of this. I'll leave it to your judgment."
He thrust the paper into the big, calloused hand and walked away without more words. He could safely leave the rest to the old man's fanaticism. But as he rode back to Double Diamond, he was for a second time in danger of letting a personal feeling cloud his judgment. This time it was dislike of Kerry Riordan. That good-looking tool was coating him more trouble than he was worth.
"Somebody ridin' up to the house, Kerry," said Rusty.
Kerry had awakened this afternoon, drained and weak, but with the fever gone, to see Rusty sitting by his bed. Rusty had explained
"What—!" Roused at last, Kerry struggled up on an elbow. "Rusty didn't have anything to do with it—the wasn't even around when Larry bee was shot—"
"This isn't for Tim Larrabee," Lacey told him. "I found out you're wanted for a killin' in Dodge."
Kerry and Rusty looked dazedly at each other. It had never occurred to either of them that business would follow them this far.
"Who told you?" Kerry demanded.
"Nate Cullen."
"Cullen! How would he know?"
"He had the wanted notices. Wouldn't say where he got 'em, but that don't matter. They're genuine. You denyin' it?"
"No, but—" Kerry's head was swimming. He held himself up with an effort. "We didn't kill anybody—"
"That's for the law in Dodge to decide. My job's to take you in an hold you till I hear from them. I'm an officer o' the law, Kerry," Lacey argued unhappily. "I got my sworn duty t' do."
"You can't take Kerry," Rusty spoke mildly. "The doc said he wasn't in no shape t' move—"
"I know.I brought a buckboard. We'll carry him down careful. It won't hurt him."
"You c'n leave him here," Rusty said in the same mild tone. "Think he's goin' t run away in the shape he's in?"
"I've got my duty," Lacey repeated, and moved toward the bed.
Rusty's good-humored face didn't change, but his hand went toward his gun-belt where he'd laid it on the table when he came in. Instantly the sheriff's gun covered him.
"Don't try to give me any trouble, Baines."
"It's all right, Rusty," Kerry urged. "Let him take me—and then remembered minercably that Lacey had come to take Rusty, too." We didn't kill Wharton," he argued desperately, as much to himself as to his friend. "They can't prove we did."
"Reckon that's right," Rusty agreed easily. He watched with an impassive face as Lacey, gun still across the bed, with blood trickling where the gunbutt had torn his skin, and rudged the heat he hadn't felt for himself. If Rusty hadn't bought a hand in his troubles, he wouldn't be in this fix. He brought grief to everybody he touched—Rob, Christie, and now this loyal friend.
But—he clung to the thought as he was being carried down and laid in the buckboard—he and Rusty hadn't done anything. Surely nobody could prove any different. To put up a fight against the law would only spell more trouble for Rob. But somewhere in this mixed-up world there must be some such thing as justice.
Kerry twisted on the hard jail cot, trying to find some comfort for the ache in his wounded side. From the silence in the next cell, he guessed Rusty was sleeping the sleep of the just, and he envied him.
He kept remembering the crowd he'd glimpsed through the window as the buckboard drew up in front of the jail. Nesters and their women, most of them in the home- Sunday clothes he supposed they'd put on for Tim Larrabee's burying, drawn up in a silence more chilling than shouts or threats, watching his progress with a stern, righteous triumph. In his memory, most of the faces blurred together, a crowd-face drained of personality, the same look stamped on every set of features. Only old Nate Cullen's stood out, with his beard and his fiery prophet's eyes.
He heard two horses clattering up to the front of the jail, a pounding at the door, and Lacey's heavy step going to open it. His cell was at the back of the building, and at first he could only hear voices without making out words. He listened with only a dull curiosity till one of the voices swelled with anger, a tone he knew.
The voices stopped, and he heard Lacey's tread approaching the cells. Other steps accompanied his, whose sound brought Kerry upright, hardly noticing the pain the abrupt movement caused him.
"You awake, Kerry? Visitor for you—it ain't regular, but you can talk to her a few minutes."
